Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ships of the Royal Navy This book is written for those who feel more than a passing interest in what is still out First Line of Defence to whom a ship should be a living entity, something to be recognised and understood With a little of technical knowledge and a memory of what has been and not merely to be regarded as a grey hulk of steel with a name. To those who would seek acquaintance with the Fleet, the present naval literature seems either too technical, or else not sufficiently so - there is no happy medium between the naval annuals and the picture books. For this reason my aim has been to try and steer a middle course and to treat with the various types of ships in a semi-technical way which I hope will be neither too advanced for the ordinary reader, nor too elementary for those with a more critical knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Royal Navy: The Sure Shield of the Empire IT is meet that, from time to time, the British public should be reminded of the debt this country and our world-wide Empire owes to those who go down to the sea in ships and occupy their business in great waters. Books connected with the sea have ever appealed to our Island people, and because the activities of the Royal Navy are ubiquitous and multifarious, books on this phase of sea life appeal, perhaps, more to the popular imagination than those which deal with the somewhat more prosaic, but no less important, work of the Mercantile Navy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years in the Royal Navy How far these pages may prove of general interest I cannot tell, but they will at least show how opposed the Navy can be to necessary re forms, involving radical departures from traditional routine; the extent to which national interests may be injured owing to conservative forces within, and without, the public services; and what injury the country may suffer from politicians interfering in technical matters, which they necessarily do not understand. It is my hope that ultimate benefit may result from an honest attempt to shed light upon matters of Vital concern to the nation by means of my personal record. In that belief, these reminiscences have been published, and I would only wish to add that nothing has been set down in malice. My intention has been not to attack persons, but to expose rather the weaknesses and defects of our administrative machinery, in so far as I had experience of it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Admirals of the British Navy If the Army, on the contrary, is so much under the microscope, it is largely because it has few or no mysteries. We know the rules. Armies are made up of men like ourselves (only better). They advance as we do, by putting one foot before another, on the solid earth. Their movements are followable, even if we cannot always understand them daily bulletins are printed in the public Press. But the Navy keeps its secrets. Not only have we no notion where it is, but we should be little the Wiser as to its inner purposes if, scanning the illimitable and capricious waves, it should be our fortune to descry here and there a flotilla of its dark grey hulls. Even in harbour most men pointing out a cruiser to their children say That's a dreadnought -a state of confusion bred and fostered by the strange, dark, dangerous element in which the Navy has its being. So much for the causes of our odd willingness to forego one of the chief privileges of British birthright, which is to criticise, even to belittling, all that is ours. But there is justification, too, as the state of the sea to-day testifies. Thanks to the Navy there is at this moment hardly an enemy ship at large on the surface of the waters. The Kaiser's darling ironclads are idle as painted ships upon a painted ocean: not even an ocean, a canal. Our troops in millions have crossed to the Continent. We have enough to eat. It is therefore pre eminently worthy of study. By our maritime supremacy and our wardship of the seas the Empire has come into being, and without that wardship the Empire would have ceased to be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text Book of Naval Architecture: For the Use of Officers of the Royal Navy The vertical fluid pressures are the most important, as these give the buoyancy which supports the ship. Since any number of parallel forces may be supposed replaced by a single force - or resultant as it is termed - acting parallel to them and equal to their sum, it is only necessary to determine the magnitude of this resultant and the position of its line of action, in order to find the effect of all the vertical pressures upon the ship. Before. Proceeding to do this, one or two definitions will be given. The centre of gravity of a body may be defined as the point through which the weight of the body, when at rest, may be supposed to act, in a direction vertically downwards. When a ship is immersed in water, it occupies a certain Space which would otherwise be filled with water the quantity of fluid so dislodged is called the displacement, and may be measured by its volume in cubic feet or its weight in tons in the former case it is known as the volume, and in the latter the weight of displace ment. When displacement alone is spoken of, the weight of' displacement is usually meant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Royal Navy, Vol. 3 of 5: A History From the Earliest Times to the Present Although, as I have said, the progress of the work continues to be somewhat delayed by my personal disabilities, I am not conscious that the book suffers in any other way in consequence of my ill health. Thanks to my numerous and indefatigable helpers and correspondents, I am not, in spite of my necessary absence from home, obliged to forego reference to any documents, state papers, or books which ought to be consulted. Happily, too, most of the materials for my part of the work were collected, and, to some extent, set in order, ere I became a prisoner here and although, of course, I still very often have to appeal for further particulars to the public libraries, the Record Office, private muniment rooms, and other storehouses of fact, there is, I find, remarkably little supple mentary research of this kind which cannot be carried out for me by my assistants. It is a longer process, and a costlier, but not, I hope, a less effective one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous British War-Ships: And Their Commanders IN the sketches which compose this book it has been the author's aim to improve upon the convenient custom of rewriting volumes of a kindred nature. An endeavour has been made to afford a glimpse of the character of the officers whose work has done so much to make the naval power of England what it is to-day, as well as of the means with which that work was done. In selecting subjects much difficulty has naturally been met, and no doubt the absence of many honoured names will be felt. But the volume had its limits, and the field of choice was wide. In the space available the main purpose in view was to present a story that should interest and inform as well as stir, and to that end no labour has been Spared to B. And the purpose of this little book is to try to Show you how true that sentence has been and is, and how, bit by bit, through many hundreds of years, the rulers and the people of these islands have been coming more and more to understand its truth, and to see that at all costs our Navy must be kept up to such strength as shall make it impossible for any enemy to attack us with any hope of success. Fleet in All Classes of Ships; Revised and Enlarged This war was the connecting link between the past and the present Navy. It was the death-blow to our wooden walls and gave birth to the ironclad. The terrible effect of shell against wooden structures was realised in one quarter at least, and from that time it was evident that fleets in future would have an entirely different character. There was no gradual evolution, but a leap from the 120-gun wooden line-of-battle ship to the iron frigate carrying one quarter the number of guns but burdened with over a thousand tons of armour four inches thick. Such was now to represent the power of nations at sea, and which, with the same advance in dimensions as characterised the wooden ships from one century to another, has continued to do so up to the present time. Though I do not intend to dwell otherwise than briefly upon our early ironclad fleet, it is useful to recall one or two of the characteristics of the first representative. When completed for sea in 1861 the W tumor had a displace ment of tons, of which tons were devoted to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
