Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earl's Cedars, Vol. 1 of 2 Like the beach, our wild hills are tossed up and down over the face of the country, in every kind of fanciful shape. Above the vil lage, the downs rise bare and brown, without a sign of vegetation except the short turf, which is soon parched by the sun. In spring and early summer the hills are green but in general it is a bleak and gloomy district, with the storm-swept bars and mountains of sand and shingle on one side, and, on every other, the bold curves and abrupt summits of the wild western downs. Book Synopsis Democracy and Education by : John Dewey
Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Supplementary Papers, 1889, Vol. 2 The first part of the day we passed through a flat country, highly cultivated, with villages and hamlets occurring frequently. Only rounded knolls were visible near the river, but hills and mountains were seen far ahead. The river had a gravel-and-shingle bed and sand banks; the sides, however, were steep, and about midday became rocky. Early in the afternoon we entered a rocky gorge, the hills running abruptly into the water. After this cultivation almost ceased. Later in the afternoon the river-bed became rocky, and numerous rapids appeared, the rise becoming considerable. The average width of the stream was 100 to 150 yards. At about four o'clock the hills became more steep and approached closer, and cultivation ceased, bamboo groves taking its place. Download or read book Rachel Marr (Classic Reprint) written by Morley Roberts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rachel Marr Beyond the twin headlands that made Morna into a little fishing harbour, and sheltered its narrow strip of sand, the round moon hung clouded in the midnight sky. The shadows of the carved headlands were obscured by a tender mist of dissipated light; the sea was shadow to the shore, while on the horizon, where the moon shone clearer, a silver line accentuated the lucid darkness of the nearer waters of the land. In that silver showed the lofty canvas of a ship drifting 'eastward on the flood which inshore now began to slacken. The waters lapped less insistently upon the rocks; the silence of the night deepened sensibly; the whispers of the salt marsh, through which a slow stream found its way to the sea, grew fainter still; the eternal music of the pinewood above the little marsh ran off into the very ghost of a vibrant and musical murmur among its loftiest branches. It was midnight, full moon and full fiood, -and the warm world rested. The house's of the little village, which could hardly be seen from the cove, since most lay behind a barrier of rock, the shoreward buttress of the eastern headland, were all asleep. Some of its few men were far out at sea long - line fishing in the great sweep of the tides. They would not return till the morning when they came from the eastward on the ebb and met the young flood and the breeze it brought with it from the west. A few boats lay upon the higher sands and shingle: one was moored beyond low-water mark, where it rested as quietly as any rock. For two long hours Morna had been still. For three days the Santa Ana had buffeted the house, but now at evening it had died down, had blown itself out. It was blown out, but it left its signs: the piled sand by the east doorsills; the tumbleweeds caught in the angle of the corral; the signboard by the electric tracks, face down; the eucalyptus with torn limb dangling.
