Schenck offers regular contrasts between the decadence of Rome and the morality of those under its yoke, and the savior is portrayed as a guiding light in an otherwise murderous, untrustworthy time ... the story is noteworthy for its breadth of context. ... An ambitious novel."

Book excerpt: Who was Jesus? A fanatical pretender to the throne? The son of God sent to reconcile men's sins? Or, the leader of a failed revolution, executed in shame? Perhaps all things at once. This epic novel weaves multiple plots, subplots, and complex themes personalizing ALL the historic figures crisscrossing Jesus' life. Herod the Great, who wanted to be the Messiah. Antipas, manipulated by the Sandherin and Herodias. Zechariah's scheme to create a Jewish Empire with John and Jesus at its epicenter. One incredible drama after another unfolds in this giant exploration of previously unthinkable adventures of Jesus. Never have the roles of mother, uncle, aunt, and grandparents been so dramatically demonstrated against a background of voracious politics and religion. These intense and original scenes luminously reveal every thought and word that Jesus spoke in a fresh interpretation, rendered courageously and superbly. This novel is a vast, world-class achievement that delves into forbidden territory without shame or timidity. I cannot think of another writer who has the depth, insight, and spiritual intellect that Walter Schenck has. Simply, he is the best.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have long loved the symphonic overtures of a brush against canvas. Th e whimsical strokes, the powerful rushes, the soft, immaculate renderings all attract me to a plain of gratitude and memories and wishful fantasies. To confess, I also wrote this collection of essays as an exercise in intellectual enrichment concerning one of my favorite subjects: great artists. I have traveled throughout the world and visited some of the most fabulous museums imaginable so I may gleam a small portion of the lives of the artists whom I selected for this brief book. I selected two great pictures for each artists: ie The Straw Hat for Rubens; Fishing Boat on the Beach for Van Gogh; Symphony in White #3 for Whistler; Tobit and Anna for Rembrandt, etc. With each artist I delved into their lives with a specific and original interpretation of why they drew as they did. I also present a brief analysis of the paintings. It would take a reader a lot of research to accumulate what I present in so brief a space. This childrens book may serve to delight the young reader to learn more of the lives of the artists who had gained fame. The etchings are replicated so the child may draw within and yes, even outside the lines to experience the wonder of reds and greens and blues on an imaginary canvas.

Book excerpt: When a woman from Samaria comes to draw water at Jacobs well, Jesus, known prophetically as Shiloh, Prince of Peace, offers her an incredible giftliving water. All she has to do is ask, which, by the way, still applies today. Jesus explains that everyone who drinks from His well, even those of questionable character like her, will never be thirsty again, and the water will become a spring welling up to eternal life (NIV). In Shilohs Well you can read all about an overflowing, abundant life that is available to all those who drink of this miraculous living water. My prayer is that these pages will proclaim a clear, unequivocal message of eternal hope and spiritual truth pointing to the God who has sustained and blessed me my entire life. May Shilohs Well make you smile, touch your heart, lead you humbly to the feet of Christ, enlighten your spiritual understanding, and challenge your commitment to Christian service!

Book excerpt: Shiloh Lane discovers a world unlike her very own. She's led a semi, partial normal life or so an outsider would believe. She lives with her cousins-- Sasha Lerner and Salem Lively who are like siblings to her. As she uncovers a brand new world; she'll uncover a world of ice magic with a tiny bit of romance. An old family friend may just restart her heart as well as making a new best friend along the way. Domino Ashmore is one year younger than Shiloh with four brothers. He's known to be creative, brooding, and quiet unless he's around the people he trusts. He will unleash a world of ice with the help of his brothers in the search for their grandmother Liz. He'll bump into a childhood crush whose heart he broke. Upon discovery, things will start to fall into place. Shiloh feels like she's the polar opposite of Domino only to learn something new. Domino should have known better than to give Shiloh the cold shoulder. As she slowly starts to warm up to him-- a friendship ensues. A warm friendship that could lead to a chilly romance. There's just one problem; she's got a crush on the fourth eldest Ashmore brother: Spirit. These two might make the perfect Ice Cupid.

The site of the British surrender has held several victory commemorations over the past two hundred years. Yorktown also was a thriving colonial port and the site of one of the biggest Union blunders in the Civil War. During Reconstruction, former slaves created a vibrant community called Slabtown on the edge of the hamlet. In the 1930s, the National Park Service began preserving the battlefield; what was for decades a sleepy village is now dominated by tourism, and nearby modern military installations have helped to give it new life. Join author Wilford Kale as he reveals the many facets of Yorktown.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As this book reveals, professional generals viewed the war as a military problem requiring battlefield solutions, while appointees (and President Lincoln) focused more emphatically on the broader political contours of the struggle. The resulting friction often eroded Northern morale and damaged the North's war effort. Goss challenges the traditional idea that success was measured only on the battlefield by demonstrating significant links between military success and the achievement of the Union's political objectives. Examining commanders like Benjamin Butler, Nathaniel Banks, John McClernand, John Fremont, and Franz Sigel, Goss shows how many filled vital functions by raising troops, boosting homefront morale, securing national support for the war--and sometimes even achieving significant success on the battlefield.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of Jerusalem in biblical times as well as subsequent areas cannot be challenged, rendering a reliable and understandable textbook on its archaeology and history a virtual necessity. 'The Archaeology of the Jerusalem Area' is such a book. The approach of this study,Ó writes the author, is basically chronological, covering the archaeological history of the Jerusalem area from earliest times to our modern day. While the archaeological evidence is stressed, care is taken to fill in the picture with historical details gathered from the Bible and other literary sources.Ó After an historical overview of the city, chapters expand on the Jerusalem area in pre-Davidic times, Davidic Jerusalem, Solomonic Jerusalem, the city during the kingdom of Judah, after the exile, from 100 B.C. to A.D. 100, in the Roman period, in the Byzantine period, in the early Islamic periods, and during the Crusader, Mamluk, and Turkish periods. Plentiful maps, photographs, and sketches illustrate the archaeological data. Footnotes and a select bibliography guide the student to additional information available on various aspects of the subject. Jerusalem has always gained her strength and renown from the moral and religious precepts taught within her walls.,Ó the author writes. This has been true from the times of the Old Testament prophets into the time of Jesus... and on through the period of Islam.Ó So he addresses such questions as these: What was the nature of the struggles waged over her by pagan, Jew, Christian, and Muslim? What archaeological evidence is there of religious practices? What was the lifestyle of the people who inhabited Jerusalem over the centuries?Ó
