Book excerpt: Shelter by the Sea is the daring, stirring first novel of author Guy Bental. A Naval commando fighter, recruited to the elite assassination unit of an Israeli intelligence agency, is battling with the demands of his double life: the typical life of every Israeli man with a wife and children, and his life with his new lover in his other identity. Shelter by the Sea offers a glimpse into the shady world that exists in parallel with our normative lives, and those of our neighbors. Through controversial assassination missions, spy affairs, and double agents that affect our world without our even being aware of it, Guy Bental's hero copes with a personal tragedy from his past that is driving him and dictating the course of his life.
Book Synopsis More Than Shelter by : Amy L. Howard
Download or read book More Than Shelter written by Amy L. Howard and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the popular imagination, public housing tenants are considered, at best, victims of intractable poverty and, at worst, criminals. More Than Shelter makes clear that such limited perspectives do not capture the rich reality of tenants’ active engagement in shaping public housing into communities. By looking closely at three public housing projects in San Francisco, Amy L. Howard brings to light the dramatic measures tenants have taken to create—and sustain and strengthen—communities that mattered to them. More Than Shelter opens with the tumultuous institutional history of the San Francisco Housing Authority, from its inception during the New Deal era, through its repeated leadership failures, to its attempts to boost its credibility in the 1990s. Howard then turns to Valencia Gardens in the Mission District; built in 1943, the project became a perpetually contested and embattled space. Within that space, tenants came together in what Howard calls affective activism—activism focused on intentional relationships and community building that served to fortify residents in the face of shared challenges. Such activism also fueled cross-sector coalition building at Ping Yuen in Chinatown, bringing tenants and organizations together to advocate for and improve public housing. The account of their experience breaks new ground in highlighting the diversity of public housing in more ways than one. The experience of North Beach Place in turn raises questions about the politics of development and redevelopment, in this case, Howard examines activism across generations—first by African Americans seeking to desegregate public housing, then by cross-racial and cross-ethnic tenant groups mobilizing to maintain public housing in the shadow of gentrification. Taken together, the stories Howard tells challenge assumptions about public housing and its tenants—and make way for a broader, more productive and inclusive vision of the public housing program in the United States.

Book excerpt: Jim Grant is at it again. Knee deep in shit, and shit deep in someone else’s past. So far so normal. Except this time it’s personal, and that’s why the past stings so much. Trouble comes in threes. Always has and always will. If Cole Thornton had recognized that he might have avoided much of what was to come. If he’d realized that the car crash was the start of his personal trifecta he could have moved on before Shelter Cove became a killing jar instead of a safe haven. Before the bodies on the beach and the shootings. And before Jim Grant came looking for him.

Book Synopsis In the Shelter of the Most High by : Daniel Duane
Download or read book In the Shelter of the Most High written by Daniel Duane and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Shelter of the Most High describes the struggle of a country curate against a plethora of historical, false, and unsubstantiated allegations of child sexual abuse made against him over a period of time. Some of the allegations date back thirty and forty years. Daniel Duane refers to how his memory has recalled these alleged events. It began with an allegation of ‘kissing an adult’. After ten years, inexplicably, it grew into sexual assault of a child, and after another eleven years, it finally blossomed into multiple allegations of child rape over a three-year period. That allegation was followed by another of abuse in open confession, which was neither sexual nor physical according to the director of public prosecutions (DPP), but this sprouted into ‘solicitation in confession’, a serious crime in canon law if it can be proven. Another allegation was made by a mother who claimed the author sexually abused her son. The son did not make the allegation. There was no corroboration of these allegations, yet diocesan authorities restricted Fr Duane’s ministry to adults. The next allegation was made by a woman who had been friendly with Fr Duane for years. She claimed he sexually abused her, including full sexual intercourse, at thirteen years of age and that he continued to sexually abuse her until she reached seventeen. This allegation was made in November 2005 when Fr Duane was very ill and unable to defend himself. Nevertheless, Bishop John Magee removed him from public ministry without a preliminary trial and later sent a votum (recommendation) to the Vatican to have him summarily dismissed from the priesthood, claiming that the accuser had a diary and that ‘it was a clear case of sexual abuse of a minor’. The diary was a scrapbook with no details of abuse. The DPP found no evidence of criminal behaviour in her allegation. Undaunted by this decision, she and the father of the first claimant went to the CEO of NCPA with their false allegations and then began a public campaign of vilification of Fr Duane in the media, resulting in the Elliot report and finally resulting in the Cloyne report, costing the state four million euros, causing the resignation of Bishop Magee, and creating the biggest split between Church and State since the State’s foundation. Five more allegations arrived in as many months. The twain were later joined by a new recruit from the fresh allegations, and the trio bullied an archbishop, a bishop, priests, and the Cloyne tribunal, which was established to try the beleaguered priest. Apart from establishing the tribunal, the church stood idly by. In the Shelter of the Most High contains the full documentary.
