Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sheep Migration in the Intermountain Region Most range forage is seasonal in character because of the effect of natural conditions upon the growing season, type of forage, stock water supply, and snowfall. Ranges Of the Intermountain Region are usually separated into. Three major classes: Summer, spring-fall, and winter - according to the season during which they are generally grazed. All of the seasonal ranges overlap to some extent. The range types and principal forage species of the seasonal ranges are briefly listed in tabulation4 on page 6. Only the general aspect of the seasonal range is given and no attempt is made to list all of the cover types and plant species. The months given are the most com mon ones for sheep, but the exact dates vary from year to year and from one part of the region to another. Summer ranges of the mountains can be used only during the sum mer because they are deeply covered with snow the rest of the year. On the other hand, it is necessary to await snowfall before sheep can be taken onto most desert or semidesert areas. Lack of a stock water supply other than snow forces the use of these ranges during the winter only. Much of the spring-fall range is limited to a short season of use while stock water is available.
