Book excerpt: Having worked on problems of three-dimensional boundary-layer flow for more than a decade, the authors decided to publish some of their results and ideas as a book. They believe this is worthwhile to do in spite of the availability of other books on boundary-layer theory. These books have their emphasis mainly on two-dimensional flow, on the modeling of turbulent flow, or on prediction techniques. The present book, on the other hand, is dedicated to the descrip tion of three-dimensional shear flow past realistic configurations and to the provision of formulations for prediction methods. To this end several sets of governing equations for the treatment of high-Reynolds number viscous flows are being discussed, together with approximations of the geometry of general configurations. Thus the book, which gives a uniform representation of the for mulation of the many problems, and not so much a review of the work done so far at different places, is aimed at the perspective in vestigator of three-dimensional viscous-flow problems. The reader should not allow himself to ~e scared off'by the use of tensorial concepts and of the index notation, both not too familiar in classic fluid mechanics. The authors made the experience that the use of these concepts alleviates much the work on realistic flow problems. In the book they have emphasized the use of these concepts and not their mathematical proofs.

This was done because we thought, and we leave this to the reader to decide, that our work has attained over the years enough substance in order to justify a book. The problem which we soon faced, was that the field still is moving at a fast pace, for instance because hyper sonic computation problems became more and more important.

The purpose of this event was to compare in terms of accuracy and efficiency several codes for solving compressible inviscid, mainly steady, Euler flows. This workshop was a sequel of the GAMM workshop held in 1979 in Stockholm; this time, though, because of the present strong activity in numerical methods for the Euler equat.ions, the full-potential approach was not included. Since 1979, other Eulpr workshops have been organised, sev eral of them focussed on airfoil calculations; however, many recently derived methods were not presented at these workshops, because, among other reasons, the methods were not far enough developed, or had not been applied to flow problems of sufficient complexity. In fact, the 1986 GAMM workshop scored very high as regards to the novelty of methods.

'Direct' and 'large eddy simulation' are terms which denote two closely con nected methods of turbulence research. In a 'direct simulation' (DS), turbu lent motion is simulated by numerically integrating the Navier-Stokes equations in three-dimensional space and as a function of time. Besides ini tial and boundary conditions no physical simplifications are involved. Com puter resources limit the resolution in time and space, though simulations with an order of one million discrete points in space are feasible. The simu lated flow fields can be considered as true realizations of turbulent flow fields and analysed to answer questions on the basic behaviour of turbulence. Direct simulations are valid as long as all the excited scales remain within the band of resolved scales. This means that viscosity must be strong enough to damp out the not resolved scales or the simulation is restricted to a lim ited integration-time interval only. In summary, DS provides a tool to investigate turbulent motions from first principles at least for a finite band of scales.
