Book excerpt: Static and dynamic unconfined compression and tensile splitting tests were performed to correlate reinforced concrete beam behavior data gathered in other research. Nominal static compressive strengths ranged from 2,500 psi to 4,000 psi. An average constant rate of stress of 279 ksi/sec was applied to 18 dynamic compression specimens which showed an increase of 11 percent for dynamic ultimate compressive strength above static ultimate compressive strength. The increase in dynamic tensile splitting strength was determined empirically to increase at a greater rate than the dynamic compressive strength for the same concrete range of stress rates. Book excerpt: Behavioral equations were developed for reinforced concrete deep beams, especially in the realm of shear capacity. A series of static and dynamic beam tests was performed to aid in the development of this objective. Static shear behavior equations for deep beams were derived on the lower boundary of reinforced concrete deep beam data represented by research from this report and other research comprising 73 tests. Equations for a total static shear capacity are given which conservatively predict shear capacities of the beam tests considered. (Author).

Nominal concrete strengths for all tests varied between 2,000 and 3,500 psi; intermediate-grade ASTM A 15 reinforcing steel was used. All beams were simply supported. Tests were performed on nine beams of three span-depth ratios (1.66, 2.67, and 3.62), subjected to a uniformly distributed dynamic transient load. The beams contained longitudinal tensile reinforcing with or without web reinforcing. Both horizontal and vertical web reinforcement were used. Behavior was observed as the span-depth ratio and web reinforcement were varied. Numerous modes of failure in shear were observed as beam configuration was varied. Modes of failure transitioned from shear to flexure as the span-depth ratio increased and the amount and orientation of web reinforcement were varied. Data were correlated with mathematical models derived in this study and with models developed in static tests. The mathematical models were used to investigate shear behavior for deep beams. Equations were developed which predicted the median shear behavior of deep beams with web reinforcement. Dynamic response prediction models were developed which predicted the measured response of the dynamic test beams. Recommendations are made for further research in the development of improved design criteria for Air Force defense systems. (Author).

The technique involves casting and cutting concrete cylindrical segments, bonding wire resistance strain gages to the segments, and then cementing the segments back together with epoxy to re-form the original structure. The technique was evaluated by analogizing the research of others and by applying the technique to reinforced concrete beams in the laboratory. Data are presented which show consistency of recorded strains using the technique. The fabrication and installation techniques are also described in detail. (Author).

Book excerpt: Thirty-five beams were tested, 13 statically and 22 dynamically, to determine their strength and behavior in shear; to determine if failure under a dynamic load was different from that under a static load; and to evaluate the effectiveness of web reinforcement in moderately deep beams. All beams tested, both statically and dynamically, exhibited arch action prior to failure. Three types of failures are described for both tests: flexure, shear, and flexure-shear. Web reinforcement in the beams tested both ways contributed little toward an increase in strength or a change in behavior and mode of failure, except for generally reducing the ultimate deflections. The static strength at flexural yielding in these moderately deep beams could be predicted reasonably well by the conventional straight line theory. The ultimate static flexural strength could be predicted by the standard ultimate strength procedure provided an increased value of the limiting concrete strain equal to 0.008 is used at failure. This book was released on 2015 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultra-high-strength concrete is a new class of concrete that has been the result of the progress in concrete material science and development. This new type of concrete is characterized with very high compressive strength; about 100 MPa. Ultra-high strength concrete shows very brittle failure behavior compared to normal-strength concrete. Steel fibers will significantly reduce the workability of ultra-high strength concrete. The development and use of self-compacting concrete has provided a solution to the workability issue. The combination of technology and knowledge to produce Ultra-High strength fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete was proved to be feasible. Few studies investigated the effect of incorporating steel fibers on the shear behavior of ultra-high-strength reinforced concrete beams. The research consists of a test series and analytical investigation. The present research investigated the shear behavior of reinforced beams made of normal-strength-concrete fiber-reinforced self-compacting concrete (28 MPa), high-strength concrete fiber-reinforced self-compacting concrete (60 MPa) and ultra-high-strength fiber-reinforced self-compacting concrete (100 MPa). The test parameters included two different shear span-to-depth ratios of 2.22 (deep beam action) and 3.33 (slender beam action), and three different steel fiber volume fractions of 0.4%, 0.8%, and 1.2%. The test results showed that the shear strength gain ranged from 20% to 129% for the beams having a concrete grade of 28 MPa, 26% to 63% for the beams having a concrete grade of 60 MPa, and 8.6% to 94% for the beams with a concrete grade of 100 MPa. For the deep beams, the shear strength gain tended to decrease by increasing the concrete grade. For the slender beams with steel fiber volume fractions of 0.4% and 0.8%, varying the concrete grade had no obvious effect on the shear strength gain. For the viii slender beams with the higher steel fiber volume fraction of 1.2%, the shear strength gain tended to decrease with an increase in the concrete grade. In the analytical investigation, the accuracy and validity of published analytical models have been demonstrated. Predictions of analytical models by Ashour et al. (1992) and Narayanan et al. (1987) were in good agreement with the experimental results.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the review of eleven references concerning reinforced concrete deep beams, it was possible to summarize: (1) the modes of failure of deep beams, (2) the static ultimate strength design equations for flexure and shear, and (3) the flexure and shear design equations for deep beams subjected to dynamic loading. In addition, a computer program was written to develop the moment-curvature curve for a reinforced concrete beam section with tensile reinforcement in a single layer. A limited experimental investigation was conducted for two reinforced concrete deep beams having span-to-depth ratios of 1.67 and subjected to a single, concentrated dynamic load at midspan. The results served to point out the areas where additional research is required to develop a more complete understanding of the behavior of reinforced concrete deep beams. Recommendations are made as to needs for additional study. (Author).
