Download or read book My Mother/My Self written by Nancy Friday and published by Delta. This book was released on 1997-09-08 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Nancy Friday began her research for My Mother/My Self in the early 1970’s no work existed that explored the unique interaction between mother and daughter. Today psychotherapists throughout the world acknowledge that if women are to be able to love without possessing, to find work that fulfills them, and to discover their full sexuality, they must first acknowledge their identity as separate from their mother’s. Nancy Friday’s book played a major role in that acceptance. The greatest gift a good mother can give remains unquestioning love planted deep in the first year of life, so deep and anassailable that the tiny child grown to womanhood is never held back by the fear of losing that love, no matter what her own choice in love, sexuality, or work may be. Through candid self-disclosure and hundreds of interviews, Friday investigates a generational legacy and reveals the conflicting feelings of anger, hate, and love the daughter’s hold for their mothers–and why they so often “become” that mother themselves.

Book excerpt: These three volumes were begun by Enzo at the age of 18, and he continued writing as he pursued different occupations and careers. The poems are largely drawn from his own experiences and or observations. Enzo rejects the notion of many modern poets who say that good' poetry shouldn't rhyme, and although some of his don't rhyme, he insists that a rhyming poem shows that the words are put together in a much more painstaking way. At the age of 21 after he'd written the first two volumes, Enzo met his Lord and Savior and his poetry changed as well. The style of writing did not change however and this can be seen throughout the many forms his writing takes. The poetry in this third volume can be said to be Psalmic in a way. Enzo drew much of his inspiration from the Holy Scriptures as well as his own walk in Christ. In the long poem titled simply "Nomad", he outlines the toil and struggle one goes through in one's life. Many of the Parables of Jesus have been topics which can be seen throughout his writings. All three volumes have been arranged chronologically, as this shows the ongoing learning that we all experience. Each of these poems has a Scripture attached to it, which speaks of the essence of the meaning of the poem. His prayer is that you can draw inspiration from reading them as he has from writing them.

Book Synopsis The Big Book of Cyberpunk by : Jared Shurin
Download or read book The Big Book of Cyberpunk written by Jared Shurin and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 1137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A genre-defining—and redefining—collection of the boldest, most rebellious, and most prescient speculative fiction, featuring stories from all over the globe. “The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.” Almost forty years ago, William Gibson wrote the line that began Neuromancer—and a movement that would change the face of science fiction. Award-winning anthologist Jared Shurin brings together over a hundred stories from more than twenty-five countries that both establish and subvert the classic cyberpunk tropes and aesthetic—from gritty, near-future noir to pulse-pounding action. Urban rebels undermine monolithic corporate overlords. Daring heists are conducted through back alleys and the darkest parts of the online world. There’s dangerous new technology, cybernetic enhancements, scheming AI, corporate mercenaries, improbable weapons, and roguish hackers. These tales examine the near-now, extrapolating the most provocative trends into fascinating and plausible futures. We live in an increasingly cyberpunk world—packed with complex technologies and globalized social trends. A world so bizarre that even futurists couldn’t explain it—though many authors in this book have come closer than most. As both an introduction to the genre and the perfect compendium for the lifelong fan, The Big Book of Cyberpunk offers a hundred ways to understand where we are and where we’re going.

Book Synopsis I Am a Patchwork Quilt by : Ana Maria Ward
Download or read book I Am a Patchwork Quilt written by Ana Maria Ward and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am a Patchwork Quilt is a compilation of writings of the nouns (names of people, places and things) that touched the life of the author, Ana Maria Ward, formerly an English teacher. While writing her first novel, a biography about her father, Gordon F. Ward, Uncommon Survivor: from Sand to Bronze, the author became inspired with the idea to write about those people who touched her life in the places where she lived from her birth to the present. Although her father was ill, he read some of the first chapters, or "patches," and encouraged her to continue with her theme during the final days of his life. He approved the concept of the author as the quilt made up of patches representing everyone involved in her life. Some of them were linked to him. Determined to please her father, the author wanted I am a Patchwork Quilt to be an uplifting experience for her readers. Related to the "degrees of separation," each person or "patch" has a unique relationship to the author and as in life, some with seriousness and some with humor. In reality, every person is unique and relationships are unique. The patches in I Am a Patchwork Quilt are connected to the reader in various amusing ways. The reader may laugh, the reader may cry, but the reader will be moved to find that around the world people will feel warm when magically involved in the blanket of love.

Book excerpt: “The Shell Collector is a beautiful story full of love, loss, and second chances.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber From USA Today bestselling author Nancy Naigle, The Shell Collector is a touching novel of a friendship that crosses generations, and learning how even the smallest gifts can change a life for good. Two years after her husband’s death, Amanda Whittier has two children to raise alone, an abandoned dream of starting a business, and a fixer-upper cottage by the sea. She has no room in her life for anything else and little interest in moving on after losing the man she loved. Paul Grant is a relative newcomer to the area, and his work with former military dogs needing rehabilitation has been good for the town. Though he loved once before, he’s convinced he’s not suited for romance and is determined to find meaning—alone—through his work and role in the community. Widowed Maeve Lindsay was born and raised on Whelk’s Island. Spirited, kind, and a little mischievous, she pours her life into the town. But she carries a secret that shapes her every move. Together, these three souls find encouragement in the most mysterious places and discover a love that’s bigger than their pain, healing their wounded hearts in ways none of them could have hoped for or expected.
