Book excerpt: Natural sciences are dominated by western knowledge and often discount Indigenous knowledge systems. This study uses Two-Eyed Seeing/Etuaptmumk to identify movement patterns and habitat use of American lobster/jakej in the Bras d'Or Lake/Pitu'paq. Lobster productivity within the lake is low and there is a lack of characteristic lobster habitat in the study bay, yet Mi'kmaw knowledge confirms high site fidelity of lobster within this area. Fine-scale movement patterns derived with acoustic telemetry positioning systems were paired with quantitative habitat analysis to perform integrated step selection analyses. Few lobsters exhibited a significant effect of substrate on habitat selection. This can be a result of the life stage of study lobsters or their abundance and distribution within the study site. Adaptive co-management, utilizing a framework that values diverse ways of knowing, can lead to evidence-based management that supports Mi'kmaw self-determination and leads to stronger and more equitable management of lobster.

Book excerpt: An apparently contiguous stock of American lobsters, Homarus americanus, is concentrated along the outer continental shelf margin and slope from Corsair Canyon westward and southward to the region of Baltimore Canyon. Between April 1968 and May 1971 we captured, tagged, and released a total of 7, 326 lobsters at 52 localities between Corsair Canyon and Baltimore Canyon. As of December 1972, 945 recaptures (12.9% recovery) had been reported, providing a basis for interpretation of seasonal and long-term movements, as well as measurements of growth rate and moult frequency. A classification scheme is developed and applied to distinguish between apparently directed seasonal movements (migrations), localized movements of less than 10 nautical miles (18.5 km), and long-period (>120 days) dispersions of 10 miles or more. This last category includes point to point tracks that cannot be objectively resolved in terms of directionality and may represent random dispersal, a summation of seasonally directed tracks, or both. We conclude from the track analyses that at least 20% of the offshore lobsters annually engage in directed shoalward migrations in spring and summer with return to the shelf margin and slope in fall and winter. This conclusion is reinforced by independent analysis of the time/depth/temperature associations of tagged lobsters at recapture which, of itself, suggests that an even larger proportion of the offshore lobsters annually effect directed migrations in response to seasonal temperature variations.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underwater bottom video and SCUBA transects were used to assess habitat and to measure the density of lobsters (Homarus americanus), crabs and other invertebrates in the Bras d'Or Lakes in July and September of 2002 and 2003. A total of 88 video transects were conducted in East Bay, West Bay, the Barra Strait area and the outer Great Bras d'Or (New Campbellton and Cape Dauphin). A total of 50 dive transects were completed in the same areas as the video transects. Few lobsters and crabs were seen during the video transects. Bottom habitats ranged from low structure bottoms such as mud or sand with sea urchins to moderate structure bottoms (occasional boulders and cobbles on mud or sand) to high structure bottoms (extensive boulders with macrophyte cover). East Bay in particular was dominated by low structure bottom types. West Bay had more of the moderate structure bottoms and Cape Dauphin had the highest proportion of high structure bottom. The densities of lobsters from dive transects ranged from 0.019 m-2 off Cape Dauphin to 0.0005 m-2 in East Bay. Rock crab (Cancer irroratus) densities were highest in the outer Great Bras d'Or Channel (0.045 m-2) in a commercial rock crab fishing area, followed by Cape Dauphin (0.023 m-2), and were lowest in East Bay (0.002 m-2). Green crab (Carcinus maenas) densities were highest off Crammond Islands in West Bay (0.009 m-2) and lowest off East Bay (0.0005 m-2) and Cape Dauphin (none observed). Quadrat sampling during SCUBA transects provided data on other epibenthic invertebrates. The most abundant group was sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) followed by starfish (Asterias vulgaris) and periwinkles (Littorina sp.). Although good lobster habitat appears to be in short supply in Bras d'Or Lake, several areas of good lobster habitat in West Bay had much lower lobster densities than comparable areas outside of Bras d'Or Lakes. As such, factors other than physical habitat alone appear to be limiting the abundance of lobsters in these areas of West Bay. The success of attempts to enhance lobster stocks in Bras d'Or Lakes will depend on understanding what the key limiting factors are

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History of the American Lobster The present work when originally undertaken in 1903 was designed to form the zoological part of a history of the lobster in both America and Europe, but subsequent events led to a modification of this plan, and when it was decided to issue this section separately, its character and scope were somewhat changed. Dr. Hugh M. Smith, of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, had planned to deal with the lobster fishery and the economic questions which this great industry has raised, in a comprehensive manner, and hope is entertained that this design may still be carried out. Though essentially a distinct work, this is in a measure both a revision and an extension of my earlier report upon The American Lobster, published by the United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries in its bulletin for 1895. But little from the latter, however, has been incorporated directly, and this only when newer or better research has failed to give us more light upon the subject. Six drawings of the young lobsters, three of which are in colors, have been reproduced, after slight revisions, from my former report; all of the rest are new and deal chiefly with the anatomy of the body and appendages, especially with torsion, reflex amputation, and the developmental history of the toothed and cracker claws, the sexual organs, and the germ cells. I have depended mainly upon the store of materials collected in former years, but have received accessions from the United States Bureau of Fisheries, for which as well as for many courtesies, now extending over a long period, I wish to ofler my sincere thanks. The Bureau has generously given me the privilege of a free lance, and all critical sections of this paper should be read in the light of individual opinion only, directed, it is true, in a friendly spirit, and as we believe from the standpoint of science. Our knowledge of the lobster has increased to such an extent during the past fifteen years that in all probability there is no marine invertebrate in the world which is now better. Known. This result is due to the suggestive ideas or elaborate researches of a large body of naturalists in both America and Europe, and to their labors the reader will find abundant reference in the pages which follow. As a result of this advance in the biological field, a signal success has been achieved in the artificial propagation or culture of the lobster, and particularly in rearing the delicate young to the bottom seeking stage, a success from which this fishery should not be slow to profit, and which it owes to experiments begun under the auspices of the United States Fish Commission at Woods Hole, Mass, and afterwards carried to a high degree of perfection by the Commission of Inland Fisheries of Rhode Island, under the direction of Prof. Albert D. Mead, at Wickford. Through the aid of such a practical method there is ground for hope, not only of restoring our depleted fisheries on the Atlantic coast, but of estab lishing new ones on the Pacific, as well as in other parts of the world. Book excerpt: This study examined American lobster (Homarus americanus) habitat and movements within Minas Basin and Minas Passage in advance of turbine installations at the FORCE test facility in Minas Passage, Bay of Fundy. Prior environmental assessment data, modeled current speeds and biogeophysical data from seafloor grab samples and seafloor video footage taken during the CCGS Hudson scientific cruise 2013-13 were used to prepare lobster habitat suitability maps for the Minas Basin, Minas Passage and Minas Channel. Although habitat quality varied spatially, most of the surveyed region represented good lobster habitat; less suitable areas were found with localized harsh conditions, e.g. scoured seafloor or high bottom drag. Vemco acoustic telemetry tags and VR2w receivers were used to track seasonal movements of lobster. Strategically deployed acoustic receivers were used to test the hypothesis that lobster move outward from Minas Basin through the FORCE test area in Minas Passage during late fall and inward in spring. A total of 125 adult lobsters were sourced from commercial catches in 2011 and 2012, fitted with Vemco acoustic transmitters and numbered disc tags, and released in Minas Basin. A total of 40-tagged lobsters (34 from 2011, 6 from 2012) were detected in Minas Passage, including FORCE and/or Minas Basin. More females than males were detected in Minas Passage; within both sexes, movement rates were variable. Although seasonal outward movement was detected for some lobsters, it appears that a portion of the population overwinters in Minas Basin. This conclusion is supported by two years of lobster tracking and interviews with six LFA 35 lobster fishers.
