Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivated by a variational model concerning the depth of the objects in a picture and the problem of hidden and illusory contours, this book investigates one of the central problems of computer vision: the topological and algorithmic reconstruction of a smooth three dimensional scene starting from the visible part of an apparent contour. The authors focus their attention on the manipulation of apparent contours using a finite set of elementary moves, which correspond to diffeomorphic deformations of three dimensional scenes. A large part of the book is devoted to the algorithmic part, with implementations, experiments, and computed examples. The book is intended also as a user's guide to the software code appcontour, written for the manipulation of apparent contours and their invariants. This book is addressed to theoretical and applied scientists working in the field of mathematical models of image segmentation.

The projection of those points to an image plane is called a surface's apparent contour. Apparent contours hold certain properties that allow for reconstruction of the original surface using only the information of the apparent contour. In this paper, we explore the structure of the apparent contour through contact classes and singularity types. Additionally we examine the properties of apparent contours that allow for 3 dimensional reconstruction. Our goal is to extend the properties of apparent contours to include information about a surface's edges that are not inherently captured in the apparent contour, while preserving the ability for reconstruction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image techniques have been developed and implemented for various purposes, and image engineering (IE) is a rapidly evolving, integrated discipline comprising the study of all the different branches of image techniques, and encompassing mathematics, physics, biology, physiology, psychology, electrical engineering, computer science and automation. Advances in the field are also closely related to the development of telecommunications, biomedical engineering, remote sensing, surveying and mapping, as well as document processing and industrial applications. IE involves three related and partially overlapping groups of image techniques: image processing (IP) (in its narrow sense), image analysis (IA) and image understanding (IU), and the integration of these three groups makes the discipline of image engineering an important part of the modern information era. This is the first handbook on image engineering, and provides a well-structured, comprehensive overview of this new discipline. It also offers detailed information on the various image techniques. It is a valuable reference resource for R&D professional and undergraduate students involved in image-related activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer systems that analyze images are critical to a wide variety of applications such as visual inspections systems for various manufacturing processes, remote sensing of the environment from space-borne imaging platforms, and automatic diagnosis from X-rays and other medical imaging sources. Professor Azriel Rosenfeld, the founder of the field of digital image analysis, made fundamental contributions to a wide variety of problems in image processing, pattern recognition and computer vision. Professor Rosenfeld's previous students, postdoctoral scientists, and colleagues illustrate in Foundations of Image Understanding how current research has been influenced by his work as the leading researcher in the area of image analysis for over two decades. Each chapter of Foundations of Image Understanding is written by one of the world's leading experts in his area of specialization, examining digital geometry and topology (early research which laid the foundations for many industrial machine vision systems), edge detection and segmentation (fundamental to systems that analyze complex images of our three-dimensional world), multi-resolution and variable resolution representations for images and maps, parallel algorithms and systems for image analysis, and the importance of human psychophysical studies of vision to the design of computer vision systems. Professor Rosenfeld's chapter briefly discusses topics not covered in the contributed chapters, providing a personal, historical perspective on the development of the field of image understanding. Foundations of Image Understanding is an excellent source of basic material for both graduate students entering the field and established researchers who require a compact source for many of the foundational topics in image analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication showcases the work of UK mathematicians and statisticians by describing industrial problems that have been successfully solved, together with a summary of the financial and/or societal impact that arose from the work. The articles are grouped by sector, and include contributions to climate modelling, engineering and health. The articles are based on Impact Case Studies that were submitted to the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), a UK government sponsored exercise that assessed the research quality within UK universities. There are many publications in the realm of ‘popular mathematics’ as well as a vast research literature that underpins this. This work is aimed at a middle ground between these two. Articles contain some mathematical detail, but the emphasis is on telling the story of a successful collaboration between academia and industry and on the results obtained. UK Success Stories in Industrial Mathematics is therefore accessible to a wide readership with interest in the applications of mathematics and statistics to problems of industrial importance and to those interested in how mathematics and statistics research affects our everyday lives and leads to economic and societal benefits.

Book excerpt: The first part of this new volume in the Inverse and Ill-Posed Problems Series studies uniqeness questions for recovering the shapes of the convex and more complicated bodies from shapes of their projections onto planes of low dimension. Some stability estimates of the solutions to these inverse problems are given. The second part deals with inverse problems with projection data directly connected to tomography, in partcular to apparent contours of smooth surfaces, which have practical interpretations such as thin cracks in continuous media which are studied in industrial defectoscopy, caustic surfaces which are studies in wave optics, etc. New results on reconstruction of smooth surfaces from observations of the wave fronts generated by these surfaces are obtained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer vision aims to detect and reconstruct features of surfaces from the images produced by cameras, in some way mimicking the way in which humans reconstruct features of the world around them by using their eyes. In this book the authors describe research in computer vision aimed at recovering the 3D shape of surfaces from image sequences of their 'outlines'. They provide all the necessary background in differential geometry (assuming knowledge of elementary algebra and calculus) and in the analysis of visual motion, emphasising intuitive visual understanding of the geometric techniques with computer-generated illustrations. They also give a thorough introduction to the mathematical techniques and the details of the implementations and apply the methods to data from real images using the most current techniques.
