Book excerpt: In this raw, emotional memoir, Nate Bennett uses a blog to work through his grief over the sudden loss of his wife Shannon. He is surprised and comforted to discover a vast virtual community of support. His blog posts--alternately poignant and of dry wit--eventually attracted tens of thousands of hits and a following from readers who hadn't even known the couple or their sons. This unique book gives the reader a window into the starkness of a widower's grieving experience in real time. What comes through in virtually every post is his love for Shannon as he weaves in vignettes from their life together, chronicling their love story and his efforts to recover. And in the end, with the support of his virtual community and the strength he was able to draw from remembering Shannon's wishes for him, he finds love again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disappearance of Shannon Matthews in Dewsbury in 2008 is a true crime case that people still seem to be fascinated by. Rarely a year goes past without a new television documentary on the case or a battery of tabloid updates concerning the activities of the disgraced Karen Matthews. The reason why the Shannon Matthews case became so famous is that it didn't end in the way people expected. The missing child was found alive and there was an outrageous twist when it became apparent that the mother was involved and it had all been a strange sort of hoax. The Shannon Matthews case was like a black comedy written by a thriller writer. The fact it was true made it all the more astonishing.

Book excerpt: Young men and women who have fallen away and then rediscovered the love of Christ speak of God's forgiveness and healing abilities in these stories of modern-day prodigals. Some follow a path much like Jesus' parable, turning their backs on family and faith in exchange for money and power. Some slip into a more subtle slide away from faith, allowing doubt or apathy to pull them away from who they are. Some make huge mistakes and are forced to pay painful penalties. Yet each story has the positive ending of a life saved by Jesus Christ. Each story offers hope of renewal and restoration. Written for all those who fear that God can't or won't forgive them for what they did, LOVED is a book of hope.

Book excerpt: Los Angeles Sheriffs Department undercover detective, Julia Barnes is assigned to a West Hollywood crisis center where two women have been brutally raped and murdered. In order to snare the killer she is to pose as a sexy, southern divorce who is a newcomer to the area. Her ruse works all too well, and before she knows it, she unknowingly comes in contact with the killer and becomes his target. Julias effectiveness as a detective is compromised when she becomes emotionally embroiled with a caller to the center who she suspects is being abused by a family member. Being a happily married mother of twin girls, the callers plight touches Julia and leaves her repulsed and horrified. Worst of all is the vague feeling of familiarity that Julia gets from the caller; a feeling that disrupts her concentration and not only jeopardizes her safety but also threatens her sanity. Struggling to divide her attention between the caller and her original mission, Julia catapults toward a tragic conclusion that shatters previously held perceptions and tests her emotional fortitude as the pieces of a puzzling chain of events become much too clear.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ireland, the Children and Family Relationships Act 2015 gives legal recognition to the diverse relationships that exist in the country. It is the most comprehensive amendment to Irish law on children and family relationships in many decades. This book examines, analyzes, and explains the new legal regime by addressing a wide range of new issues, including: parental rights in diverse family arrangements * parentage in cases of assisted reproduction * the establishment of a national donor-conceived person register * the "best interests" principle with regard to children * joint adoption for civil partners/cohabiting partners * access entitlements for a wider range of people * defined maintenance provisions for civil partners and cohabiting partners living with a child for a certain amount of time * provisions to help "make parenting work" * the formalization of the relationship between a child and their de facto parent. The book also examines the new yet different pathways to guardianship, expanding the duties, obligations, and rights of guardians and thereby further bolstering the rights of children. For the first time, non-marital fathers cohabiting for a specified period with the child's mother will be entitled to automatic guardianship. Subject: Irish Law, Children's Law, Family Law]

This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans migrated from southern regions of the United States, the Caribbean, and Africa during the early 20th century, settling in large urban communities in the Midwestern, Northern, and Western regions of the United States. During the early 21st century, African Americans continued their post-industrialized transition from their initial urban locations to suburban and exurban locations, with class, income, and education being the predominant factors in determining locations of choice. However, the result of this 21st century exodus gave rise to an increased sense of isolation, loss of identify, and the gradual erosion of political power unique to urban communities in the late 20th century. African American Suburbanization and the Consequential Loss of Identity is a critical scholarly resource that examines the experiences of African Americans and the development of African American identities. It represents an important opportunity for an examination of the implications of this 21st century exodus, giving voice to all aspects of African American-lived experiences in suburban communities. Featuring a wide range of topics such as higher education, criminal justice, and social media, this book is ideal for professionals, educators, social scientists, political leaders, law enforcement, students, and researchers.
