Book excerpt: This volume, first published in 2002, presents a sophisticated analysis of the musical instruments, repertoires, musicians and ensembles, and symbolism of the ritual music of Shamans of Seoul, Korea. Placed firmly in a social and historical context, it shows that Shamanism, considered superstition by many today, is alive and well in Seoul in a rich tradition reaching back to the Chosôn Dynasty (1392-1910), the capital of which was Hanyang (now Seoul). The instruments, dress and other accoutrements of courtly life from the Chosôn Dynasty have been taken up, although transformed, in contemporary rituals among spirit-possessed Shamans. Through a comparison of Hanyang kut - the rituals of the Hanyang Shamans - and the ritual practice of Inner Asian Shamans, and through an analysis of the relations of spirit-possession music rituals to musok, the indigenous religion of Korea, Seo sheds light on the role of music, spiritual practice and culture in present-day Korea.

Book excerpt: This work is mainly comprised of a translation into English of four complete large-scale Korean Shaman ritual songs transcribed from tape recordings, which, until the present time, have remained either entirely untranslated, or, if otherwise, are only quoted in the form of brief excerpts in a few short articles. The song contents cover a broad regional spectrum which contain invaluablematerials related to Korean folklore, mythology, literature, history, and religion, and offer deep insight into a facet of Korean culture that has remained largely overlooked and unexplored.

This book is not, however, a study of Korean Shamanism, but rather limits itself to an attempt to study the dance rituals as performed in the Seoul area. The difference between Shamanistic dance and music, as compared with other folk dances of Korea, is explained here.

This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Still today, in South Korea, many people pay for the services of mudang - the intermediaries of Korea's syncretic folk religion. The majority of mudang are called to the profession by gods; their clients are individuals or small groups and they focus on the use of spirit-power ('possession') for diagnosis and problem-solving. There is, however, a tiny minority of mudang who are born or adopted into the ritual life and who have no spirit-power. These ritualists perform in large family groups, conducting rituals for whole communities. They focus far more on the use of music, dance, and song to provide healing experiences. In this book, Simon Mills provides an in-depth analysis of the East Coast hereditary mudang institution and its rhythm-oriented music, focusing particularly on the Kim family of mudang - the government-appointed 'cultural assets' for the genre. It is the first English language book to study this tradition in any depth, using materials from fieldwork (1999-2000) alongside interviews with two key family members, Kim Junghee and Jo Jonghun. Throughout, Mills includes numerous quotes from the ritualists themselves to help reveal their characters, opinions and beliefs. He documents the family's history, the decline of the hereditary mudang institution and its kinship customs, and the family's changing relations towards 'outsiders'. Mills also details ritual procedures, musical structures, playing techniques, instruments, and learning methods both of the past and present; as non-ritual musicians become increasingly aware of the powerful ritual rhythms, the music is finding new life in non-ritual settings. Downloadable audio resources featuring Kim, Jo, and Mills accompanies the book, each track corresponding to the equivalent chapter in the text.

Book excerpt: "The object of this dissertation is to show that Korean shaman ritual performances in their musical and textual structures are not merely mirror representations of the current sociocultural situation of Korea, but they shape the very processes of today's Korean culture. The argument is that although shamanism has been regarded as a marginalized peripheral cult for a long time, it has played a vital role in the process of re-creating and re-establishing Korean national culture." --p. ix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its humble "straw mat" origins to its paradoxical status as a national treasure, p'ansori has survived centuries of change and remains the primary source of Korean narrative and poetic consciousness. In this innovative work, Chan Park celebrates her subject not as a static phenomenon but a living, organic tradition adapting to an ever-shifting context. Drawing on her extensive literary and performance backgrounds, Park provides insights into the relationship between language and music, singing and speaking, and traditional and modern reception. Her "performance-centered" approach to p'ansori informs the discussion of a wide range of topics, including the amalgamation of the dramatic, the narrative, and the poetic; the invocation of traditional narrative in contemporary politics; the vocal construction of gender; and the politics of preservation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his years of teaching literature and drama at Sogang University in Seoul, the author became attracted to Korean shamanist ritual, or kut, as a sophisticated form of drama that has power to transform the daily realities of participants lives into events of spiritual significance.Korean shamanism centers at least as much on the ritual dramatization of symbolic signs and on the communitys belief in these signs as on the person of the shaman, or mudang. Without intending to undermine the importance of the mudang, this study focuses on the public dramatization of these symbols. It investigates the dynamics by which kut transform ordinary realities into freeing, harmonizing, objectifying signs of contract with the gods and spirits, who are believed to make their presence known at significant moments of life. The author was one of the recipients of the award for excellence in shamanist research presented by the International Society for Shamanistic Research in 2004.
