Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few only are the remarks absolutely needed by way of introduction to a work which within itself sufficiently explains and carries out a new method of illustration for the dramas of Shakespeare. This book is the results of genuine study. The results arrived at, though imperfect, are also grounded on real similitudes between Shakespeare and his predecessors and contemporaries; and those similitudes, parallelisms, or adaptations of thought, by whichever name distinguished, often arose from the actual impression made on his mind and memory by the Emblematists whose works he had seen, read, and used.

Download or read book Shakspere and His Predecessors written by Frederick S. Boas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakspere and His Predecessors In spite of the ever-increasing mass of Shaksperean literature, there is, so far as I am aware, no English work dealing in some detail with all the dramatist's writings in their approximate chronological order. The present volume is an attempt in this direction. Professor Dowden's fine study of Shakspere's Mind and Art, to which my debt is manifest, is, by virtue of its scope, most intimately concerned with the historical plays and the tragedies, and especially with those elements in them which help to reveal the personality of their author. What I have here aimed at is to discuss Shakspere's works in relation to their sources, to throw light on their technique and general import, and to bring out some of their points of contact with the literature of their own and earlier times. Hence in the opening chapters I have sketched the rise of the English drama, and have briefly indicated Shakspere's bond of kinship, not only with his immediate predecessors, but with the mediaeval playwrights. And throughout the volume I have given greater prominence than has, I think, been usual to those features in his works which link them to the pre-Renaissance period. Book Synopsis Shakespeare and the Versification of English Drama, 1561-1642 by : Professor Marina Tarlinskaja
Download or read book Shakespeare and the Versification of English Drama, 1561-1642 written by Professor Marina Tarlinskaja and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-09-28 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveying the development and varieties of blank verse in the English playhouses, this book is a natural history of iambic pentameter in English. Marina Tarlinskaja’s statistical analysis of versification focuses on Shakespeare, but places his work in the literary context of the times. Her results offer new ways to think about the dating of plays, the attribution of anonymous texts, and how collaborators divided their task in co-authored dramas.
