Book excerpt: Excerpt from Macbeth My notes therefore are queries; with here and there a conventional note to set forth a point I deemed too remote from the range of search possible to youth. I have printed here a considerable number of the questions I would ask, and the topics for exploration I would assign, on the play of Macbeth. By no means, however, would I be understood as having exhausted, -or come any where near exhausting, the stock of possible class-room questioning on this play. It will be easy to think of knotty Shakespearian problems much more perplexing than any I have broached. I may say, however, that I have meant, by my queries, to indicate how far it seems to me in high schools desirable to push the discussion of Shakespearian difficulties. The scope of possible query ing among the easier subjects is of course practically unlimited. To facilitate juvenile research in Shakespeare, the first requisite is free access to the Globe edition of the poet's works. The school should possess Globes enough for the pupils to use without restriction, some carrying the books home at night, and others finding their chance in the study hours. The Crowell Globe Shakespeare is not a handsome book, but it is cheap. The Macmillan Globe costs twice as much and is all of twice as good. They began to appear as early as 1594, sometimes with the permis sion of Shakspere and his partners in the theatre, ' sometimes against their wish, the manuscript having been Obtained fraudulently. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies of Shakespeare's Plots The following studies of Shakespeare were originally delivered as popular lectures before a mixed audience. Their design is to be suggestive rather than exhaustive, and to call attention to a method of teaching Shake speare somewhat different from that which is now employed in colleges and schools. That method, which treats the plays of Shakespeare more as convenient collections of hard words and unusual idioms than as masterpieces of literature, seems to me to be in many respects extremely unsatisfactory. It is repellent rather than attractive to the student, and it teaches him from the very outset to pursue his studies by a wrong road. Under its in uence, the play as a whole tends to be neglected, words are exalted to the exclusion of thoughts, and study is far too much on the lines adopted by the young lady who is said to have fastened down the text with a piece of elastic in order that it might not interfere with her learning the notes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Shakespeare in the Plays of King John, Cymbeline, Macbeth, as You Like It, Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet: With Observations on the Criticism The first paper of the following series will be found to explain sufficiently the nature of the critical views which led its author into these first public essays on a subject which had long engaged his attention as a desultory student. However, as he advanced towards a more systematic examination of this richest and pro foundest field of poetic and dramatic art, new considerations have naturally opened before him, affecting the very essence of Shakespearian criticism. If one views the window from the outside he sees colors that are blurred, figures that are indistinct, and vague in outline. In order to perceive the harmony of the colors, the symmetry of the figures, the perfection and beauty of the window as a whole, the beholder must enter the cathedral, and view the window from the inside. Likewise to study a great drama successfully, to perceive and appreciate its symmetry, its unity, its power, its grandeur, it must be studied from the inside. Since 1948 Survey has published the best international scholarship in English and many of its essays have become classics of Shakespeare criticism. Each volume is devoted to a theme, or play, or group of plays; each also contains a section of reviews of that year's textual and critical studies, and of the year's major British performances. The books are illustrated with a variety of Shakespearean images and production photographs. The virtues of accessible scholarship and a keen interest in performance, from Shakespeare's time to our own, have characterised the journal from the start. Most volumes of Survey have long been out of print. Backnumbers are gradually being reissued in paperback.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook to the Works of William Shakespeare His Handbook to Shakespeare offers in one volume the critical and explanatory helps that must otherwise be sought from many books. As far as possible, it embodies all recent research and, like the author's Handbook to Tennyson, aims at illustrating principles while it supplies information. References are made to the Globe Edition of Shake speare's works; and for the duration of dramatic action I am indebted to Mr. Daniel's time analysis of the plays. As on former occasions, my best thanks are due to Mr. W. J. Lias, late Scholar of Jesus College, Cambridge, for his kindness in revising the proofs; I have also to thank the Rev. Tabor Davies, m.a., for similar help, and for compiling the Index. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
