Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare on the State This volmne continues a theatrical chronicle on which I have worked, almost incessantly, for many years, and which I hope to live long enough to finish. The labor has been hard; the product of it, I venture to believe, will prove useful. Persons who consider the Theatre to be merely a shop and who view Theatrical Management as merely the Show Busi ness, cannot be, and are not, expected to feel, or pretend to feel, even the slightest interest in a work which relates to the history, and aims to illustrate the development, of the beautiful Art of Acting. Per m, on the other hand, who believe, as I do, that the Theatre exercises a vast influence on Society, and thould be cherished and stimulated as a potent agent of civih'zation, will, I am confident, favor the pursu ance of an attempt, - already approved by their cordial welcome of the First Series of these Studies, to present, in a suitably compendious form, an adhentic account of the manner in which, from the beginning, the Plays of Shakespeare have been acted. My purpose and plan are fully stated in the Preface tothefirstvolumeofmy searespeareonteestage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The mere multiplicity of the events of this wide commemoration, the volume of universal applause of the generations, force us to realize the insignificance of any particular expression of the general praise. As in a popular festival, each participant, as he passes, follows his own whim in the common carnival. The scholar will turn the leaves of his book and linger caressingly over recondite difficulties of the text or the meaning; the player will fit the costume to the mind, and play the part from his bosom. Everything will go on as in a play. To-day all the world's a stage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare, From an American Point of View The following Essays were originally addressed to a public consisting for the most part of American readers: and it was the intention of the author to publish them first, in a collected form, in the United States, It, however, having become apparent, in the course of his researches, that it would be advisable to consult the British libraries, he concluded to issue the work in London. This was the more desirable, because a judgment rendered from the fountain head of English criticism, on what may be deemed a conspicuously English subject, would be more authoritative and satisfactory than if given from any other source. The author, therefore, takes this opportunity to say that the most rigorous criticism will not be unwelcome; not, indeed, from any vain confidence in his own views, but because they are put forward in good faith, and in order to elicit truth concerning a genius who is the richest inheritance of the intellectual world. Should, indeed, his views be controverted, the author must even in that event be a gainer in common with the other admirers of Shakespeare; for it can never be a true source of mortification to relinquish opinions in favour of those which are shown to be better. Presenting these pages, therefore, rather as a series of inquiries than as dogmatic doctrine, the author strives to support them by only such an amount of controversy as is legitimately due from one who invites the public to a new discussion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Tales From Shakespeare Although in the following pages I have chosen those plays, or most of them, which Charles and Mary Lamb omitted from their Tales from Shake speare, and although I have. Taken a title very like theirs, my attempt has not been to round off or tag a conclusion to their inimitable work. They, as wise judges of what their book should be, found that a certain class of play lay outside their purpose. It is just these plays - the historical ones - which, with a different purpose, are here cast into narrative form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cervantes and Shakespeare Don Quixote is now invested with a glory of which Cervantes never dreamed. At the time of its publication, and long afterwards, it was regarded simply as an amusing book. The author himself records that the average Spaniard clamoured for more Qu'ixotades: let Don Quixote charge and let Sancho babble, and, no matter what it be about, we shall be content with that But from the outset there were always a few who read the book with other eyes and greater understanding. There were some, it appears, who 'would have been pleased had the author omitted some of the trouncings inflicted on Senor Don Quixote in various encounters'. It was not till the romantic movement began to develop that the deeper wisdom of Cervantes's great book was tardily disengaged from the more visible humours of the story: this is well brought out by a French writer, M. J.-j. A. Bertrand, in Cervantes et le romantisme allemand, an interesting monograph which, by the irony of chance, was published during the summer of 1914s. Schlegel and the rest are entitled to due credit for their clear-sightedness. The trick of symbolic inter pretation has now been learned by many, and some of these prac titioners have obtained bizarre results. It is tolerably plain that the author of Don Quitote made sly allusions at times to persons and things that he disliked. But when we are invited to believe that his book is a caricature of some of the most glorious figures in his country's history, a satire on the army in which he served, and a covert attack on the church of which he was a devout member, our confidence in our guides diminishes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What We Really Know About Shakespeare During the last winter I listened to three differ ent addresses from the author of Atlantis, who thinks he has discovered a cipher in the First Folio, and that the story concealed by this cipher claims the Plays of Shakespeare as the work of Lord Bacon! Mr. Donnelly had a large audience, and on one of these occasions he addressed a literary club, and was answered at some length by two or three fair Shakespeare scholars. He stated in substance that Shakespeare was low-born, vilely bred, led an obscure life, and was a man who might easily be hired to cloak the personality of a superior who feared political disgrace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's "Hamlet" The theory of Hamlet, which I state in the second chapter of this book, was first suggested to me by a performance of the play which Mr. William Poel gave some years before the war in the Little Theatre. It left out a good deal of the play and was imperfect in execution; but it seemed to me right in conception, and suddenly I understood Hamlet, or thought I did, and saw that it was not a puzzle but a masterpiece. I then tried to explain my understanding in an analysis of the play, but did not publish it because, I thought, enough and more than enough had been written about Hamlet. I am provoked to publish it now, after rewriting it, by the theories of Mr. J. M. Robertson and Mr. T. S. Eliot, with which I deal in my first chapter and which imply, or assert, that Hamlet is not a master piece at all, but an accident or a failure. Dr. J ohn Henry Boynton, of Syracuse University, was to have been the sole editor, but in May, 1898, he died very suddenly. The text, the notes and the glossary he left prac tically in the form in which they now are; of the introduction nothing appeared except a table of contents. Yet it is hoped that even from this incomplete product his promise as a scholar may be recognized. His work has been revised, and the introduction added by one of his friends and fel low-students - Dr. W. A. Neilson, of Bryn Mawr. To Dr. Neilson's generous activity the friends of Dr. Boynton owe grateful recognition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shakespeare Canon Old doubts as to the possibility of getting attention for such inquiries have been partly removed by the welcome emergence, in this field, of Messrs. Pollard and Dover Wilson, who in 1919 asked the readers of the Times Literary Supplement whether Shakespeare was likely to write in 1599 in the manner of certain passages cited by them from henry V. The same challenge may as fitly be put with regard to much of julius cesar. After many more revisions, accordingly, I have since decided to table certain discussions as putting some of the more prominent problems that have arisen for me in Shakespeare study, the origination of henry V being one of them. Others have been set forth in previous essays these, which before were but outlined, are now handled at some - I hope not undue length, after a renewed pilgrimage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Shakespeare The advances made in Shakespearean scholarship within the last half-dozen years seem to justify the writing of another manual for school and college use. The studies of Wallace in the life-records, of Lounsbury in the history of editions, of Pollard and Greg in early quartos, of Lee upon the First Folio, of Albright and others upon the Elizabethan Theater, as well as valuable monographs on individual plays have all appeared since the last Shakespeare manual was prepared. This little volume aims to present what may be necessary for the majority of classes, as a background upon which may be begun the study and reading of the plays. Critical comment on individual plays has been added, in the hope that it may stimulate interest in other plays than those assigned for study. Chapters I, VIII, IX, X, and XIII are the work of Professor MacCracken; chapters V, VI, VII, XII, and XIV are by Professor Pierce; and chapters II, III, IV, and XI are by Dr. Durham. The authors have, however, united in the criticism and the revision of every chapter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
