Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shah Abdul Latif The annals of the early period of contact between Islam and Hinduism are filled with tales of pitiless massacre and bloodshed, and the history of succeeding centuries is marked with frequent outbursts of intolerance and persecution. It is a relief to turn from such blood-stained records to the instances in which fraternal relations have been established between these otherwise irreconcilable antagonists through more than a thousand years of the religious history of India. The tie that drew Hindu and Muslim together was generally mysticism, and among the many Muhammadan mystics that India has produced none has made so successful an appeal to the Hindus among whom they have lived than the Muslim saints of Western and North-West India. Their history is obscure, and indeed their Sufiistic teaching did not tend to encourage in their followers much regard for strict historical narration; so their biographers have little information to give regarding them save tales of the unusual and the miraculous. One of these Sufis of Western India was Shah Abdul Latif, an account of whose life and teaching is here presented to the English reader for the first time. Born in the reign of Aurangzeb, whose zeal for Islam had shown itself in the destruction of thousands of Hindu temples, and had done much to alienate the Hindus from their Muhammadan fellow-subjects, he represents in his own teaching a tolerant attitude towards Hinduism that is in striking contrast to the behaviour of many of his co-religionists. Book excerpt: The female voice plays a more central role in Sufi ritual, especially in the singing of devotional poetry, than in almost any other area of Muslim culture. Female singers perform sufiana-kalam, or mystical poetry, at Sufi shrines and in concerts, folk festivals, and domestic life, while male singers assume the female voice when singing the myths of heroines in qawwali and sufiana-kalam. Yet, despite the centrality of the female voice in Sufi practice throughout South Asia and the Middle East, it has received little scholarly attention and is largely unknown in the West. This book presents the first in-depth study of the female voice in Sufi practice in the subcontinent of Pakistan and India. Shemeem Burney Abbas investigates the rituals at the Sufi shrines and looks at women's participation in them, as well as male performers' use of the female voice. The strengths of the book are her use of interviews with both prominent and grassroots female and male musicians and her transliteration of audio- and videotaped performances. Through them, she draws vital connections between oral culture and the written Sufi poetry that the musicians sing for their audiences. This research clarifies why the female voice is so important in Sufi practice and underscores the many contributions of women to Sufism and its rituals.

I was looking for people who could help in developing my taste further and on being recommended I went to visit M. A Sheikh who had an office in the basement of Radio Pakistan Lahore. With regular visits I came to know of the setting up of the Classical Music Cell and its dramatic downturn in fortune with the change of government. The Classical Music Research Cell had been shut down after martial law had been imposed in nineteen seventy seven as an unnecessary drain on the national expenditure. Since the hired premises had to be vacated the question remained as to what was to become of the music, manuscripts, books and some equipment which had been collected so assiduously in the past year. It was lugged from one premise to another till finally a more permanent place in the basement of the Lahore Radio Station was settled for. During this series of very grave crises a small team maneuvered to ward off all the palpable threats. These few individuals had as if almost vowed not to let the Cell be closed down or fall in UN deserving hands. Principally through M.A.Sheikh’s efforts it managed to survive. I gradually came to appreciate the work being done by M.A Sheikh who really toiled for years in conditions which were far from ideal to save the collection of recorded material and the many rare and invaluable manuscripts which had been collected over time. .
