Book excerpt: "At his brother's wedding in 2002, 30-year-old Josh Kench ... announced that he was going to do the Coast to Coast. His pronouncement was met with derision but he's proved his doubters wrong. Josh won the 2010 Ultra-enduro Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge covering a mind-numb[ing] 8 laps of the 160km course in 55 hours. But that was only the start. In June 2011, the 39-year-old Wellington plumber lined up to compete in the Race Across America - a 16-day race covering 4828km from California to Maryland. This is the story of how an ordinary Kiwi bloke became an ultra-endurance athlete and decided to take on the world"--Publisher's information.

Download or read book Utsuwa written by Kylie Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A piece must be practical enough to be used every day. It must be crafted at its place of origin, using traditional techniques and materials. And it must be handmade. Japanese craft has long been revered for its quality and beauty, and skilled craftwork remains an important part of Japanese life. 'Utsuwa', meaning 'for everyday use', embodies the ethos of handmaking in Japan, where handcrafted wares must be as practical as they are beautiful. This book takes us behind the scenes into the private studios of some of Japan's most exciting artisans to reveal stories of material, method, place and culture. It guides us through quiet galleries and colourful marketplaces, where the provenance of a piece is central to its story. Utsuwa is a love letter to the makers and sellers, and to all those who share the Japanese reverence for tradition and beauty.
Download or read book The Masked Rider written by Neil Peart and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2010-11-16 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neil Peart's travel memoir of thoughts, observations, and experiences as he cycles through West Africa, reveals the subtle, yet powerful writing style that has made him one of rock's greatest lyricists. As he describes his extraordinary journey and his experiences ' from the pains of dysentery, to a confrontation with an armed soldier, to navigating dirt roads off the beaten path ' he reveals his own emotional landscape, and along the way, the different "masks" that he discovers he wears. "Cycling is a good way to travel anywhere, but especially in Africa. You are independent and mobile, and yet travel at people speed ' fast enough to travel on to another town in the cooler morning hours, but slow enough to meet people: the old farmer at the roadside who raises his hand and says, 'You are welcome,' the tireless women who offer a smile to a passing cyclist, the children whose laughter transcends the humblest home."

Book Synopsis Alternative Energy Sources by : Efstathios E. Stathis Michaelides
Download or read book Alternative Energy Sources written by Efstathios E. Stathis Michaelides and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-16 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternative Energy Sources is designed to give the reader, a clear view of the role each form of alternative energy may play in supplying the energy needs of the human society in the near future (20-50 years). The two first chapters on "energy demand and supply" and "environmental effects," set the tone as to why alternative energy is essential for the future. The third chapter gives the laws of energy conversion processes, as well as the limitations of converting one energy form to another. The section on exergy gives a quantitative background on the capability/potential of each energy source to produce power. The fourth, fifth and sixth chapters are expositions of fission and fusion nuclear energy, the power plants that may produce power from these sources and the issues that will frame the public debate on nuclear energy. The following five chapters include descriptions of the most common renewable energy sources (wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, hydroelectric) some of the less common sources (e.g. tidal and wave energy). The emphasis of these chapters will be on the global potential of each source, the engineering/technical systems that are used in harnessing the potential of each source, the technological developments that will contribute to wider utilization of the sources and environmental effects associated with their wider use. The last three chapters are: "energy storage," which will become an important issue if renewable energy sources are used widely. The fourteen chapters in the book have been chosen so that one may fit a semester University course around this book. At the end of every chapter, there are 10-20 problems and 1-3 suggestions of semester projects that may be assigned to students for further research.
