Gaiadon, was paradise and fondly called The Other Shore, until The Lord of the Dark Flame, Conquest, shattered the Heartlands and built his demon city, Lodewick, upon the rubble and ruin. Using blood magic to cast his dark arts, Conquest masquerading as Lord Abrecan, harvests power from his thralls in Baelmonarchia, while he brutalizes the lands and their Governors in the North. Anarchy erupts in fire and fury when Micah Apollon, crowns himself King on the forbidden Night of The Dead. Meanwhile, in Mountwraith a hidden Spectral Star appears, but will the secretive Romarii meet the terms of the covenant they made. Will they be able to protect the Spectral Star from the Acolytes of Anuk. Elgenubi Zuben, one of a group of insurgents called The Ten, give aid to Reynard and Lady Leleth's son, even though they are favoured members of Lord Abrecan's demonic inner circle. THERE IS ONLY A WHISPER OF SHADE BETWEEN THE LIGHT AND THE DARK, YET THIS IS THE PLACE WHERE GODS AND DEMONS COME TO MAKE WAR. GAIADON. THE OTHER SHORE.

Book excerpt: In Dionysus on the Other Shore, Letizia Fusini argues that throughout his early exile years (late 1980s-1990s), Gao Xingjian gradually moved away from Absurdist Drama to develop a dramaturgical system with tragic characteristics. Drawing on a range of contemporary theories of tragedy, this book reconfigures some of the key tropes of Gao’s post-1987 theater as varied articulations of the Dionysian sparagmos mechanism. They are the dismemberment of the dramatic self, the usage of constricted spaces, the divisive nature of gender relations, and the agony of verbal language. Through a text-based analysis of seven plays, the author ultimately aims to show that in Gao’s theater, tragedy is an ongoing and mostly subtextual dynamism generated by an interplay of psychic forces concurrently cohesive and divisive.

Book excerpt: When Gao Xingjian won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2000, he became the only Chinese writer to achieve such international acclaim. The Chinese University Press is the first publisher of his work in the English language. Indeed, "The Other Shore" is one of the few works by the author available in English today. "The Other Shore: Plays by Gao Xingjian" contains five of Gaos most recent works: "The Other Shore" (1986), "Between Life and Death" (1991), "Dialogue and Rebuttal "(1992), "Nocturnal Wanderer" (1993), and "Weekend Quartet" (1995). With original imagery and in beautiful language, these plays illuminate the realities of life, death, sex, loneliness, and exile. The plays also show the dramatists idea of the tripartite actor, a process by which the actor neutralizes himself and achieves a disinterested observation of his self in performance. An introduction by the translator describes the dramatist and his view on drama.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gao Xingjian is the leading Chinese dramatist of our time. He is also one of the most moving and literary writers for the contemporary stage. His plays have been performed all around the world, including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Australia, the Ivory Coast, the United States, France, Germany and other European countries. Born and educated in China, Gao studied French literature at the Beijing Foreign Languages Institute between 1957-1962. After the Cultural Revolution, he became a resident playwright at the Beijing People's Art Theatre. His works, including Bus Stop, Absolute Signal, and Wilderness Man, were trend-setting and have created many controversies and a wave of experimental drama in China. In 1987 he settled in Paris, France and continued to write in Chinese and in French. He was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government in 1992. The present collection contains five of Gao Xingjian's most recent works: The Other Shore (1986), Between Life and Death (1991), Dialogue and Rebuttal (1992), Nocturnal Wanderer (1993), and Weekend Quartet (1995). One finds poetry, comedy as well as tragedy in the plays, which are graced by beautiful language and original imagery. Combining Zen philosophy and a modern worldview, they serve to illuminate the gritty realities of life, death, sex, loneliness, and exile, all essential concerns in Gao's understanding of the existence of modern man. The plays are also manifestations of the dramatist's idea of the tripartite actor, a process by which the actor neutralizes himself and achieves a disinterested observation of his self in performance.

Book excerpt: "Another great story by Henley. I love how there are no easy choices in this world and how her characters struggle with right and wrong." ★★★★★ Alev is proud to be a Fire Sister, one of a fierce group of women who live in a flaming mountain compound called the Cloister. The Sisters live without men, so Alev gathers young girls to replenish their numbers. After she plucks Kaiya from the remote village of Koolkuna, the girl’s father follows them into the wilderness. Alev keeps him at bay, but over time she suspects that this man, at least, isn’t the monster she was taught all men are. When Kaiya's father manages to reach the Cloister, the Sisters want to put him to death. Alev can look the other way, or she can heed the growing whispers of her heart to help the girl and her father escape. But to defy the Fire Sisters is to revoke the only life and family Alev has ever known—and to face certain death herself. "Fantastic companion novella to the series!" ★★★★★ The Gatherer is a companion novella in the fantasy romance Brilliant Darkness series. Fans of Divergent and Under the Never Sky will love this series about a blind girl who alone can protect her forest people from the terrifying flesh-eating creatures that hunt them.

Bundled by subject matter rather than author, the books create a compelling trilogy. "Palimpsest's eClassics series, Scottish Lost Treasures, shows us how much poorer Britain's cultural heritage would be without Scottish writers ... The best example I've seen of how curation and presentation can bring old books to new audiences" - The Observer "This strikes me as a fantastic venture, and one I hope will expand further" - Professor Willy Maley, University of Glasgow, Scotland on Sunday
