Book excerpt: A love painted in passion and mistakes, can they find a picture-perfect future together? Harper Marquette dedicates her passion to her artwork, rather than pursuing romantic relationships. However, Lucas Genezen appeared to be different - the kind of person who was refreshing and gentle. Drawn to his kind eyes and captivating smile, Harper found herself in bed with him, only to wake up to her mistakes and an empty hotel room. Lucas made a huge mistake with Harper, and she would be better off without his damaged heart and complicated life. Yet, he can't forget about her and desperately wants a chance to make things right. But when Harper discovers that he is a young widower, she realizes that it would be foolish to pursue a relationship with someone who can never truly love her in return, even if it doesn't feel reckless when they are together. Despite their efforts to move on, neither of them can let go of their pasts - or each other. Is it possible for them to embrace their tumultuous histories and create a perfect future together? Or will they be doomed to repeat heartbreak over and over again? "Colors of the Heart" challenges the notion of love's limitations and explores the delicate balance between hope and heartbreak. With raw emotions and a tender narrative, this gripping novel will have readers questioning the nature of love and what it truly means to embrace both the light and dark shades of the heart.

When Kaira Winters decided to go to Islington—a boarding school deep in the woods of Michigan—she thought she could finally get away from everything she has tried so hard to forget, including some things from her past that she refuses to believe ever actually happened. Everything seemed great until the bodies of murdered students started appearing all over campus. The victims seem to have been killed in some sort of ritual sacrifice. And even worse, Kaira’s dreams are giving her clues to the killer’s identity. Though she tries to resist, Kaira quickly realizes that she is the only one who can stop the violence, but to do so she must come to terms with her past. She’s going to have to listen to the voice that is buried deep within her…the one that claims to have unimaginable power…the one that claims to be an actual goddess. But even if Kaira can harness the power within her, will it be enough to stop the darkness that has fallen over her school? And if it is strong enough, then what’s to stop the goddess from wreaking her own havoc once she’s released? Filled with murder, mystery, and a little bit of magic, this fresh genre-bending novel is a thrilling page-turner you won’t be able to put down until the very last page.

Download or read book Shades of Noir written by Joan Copjec and published by Verso. This book was released on 1993 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For this was the summer when, after the hiatus of the Second World War, French critics were again given the opportunity to view films from Hollywood. The films they saw, including The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity. Laura, Murder, My Sweet, and The Woman in the Window, prompted the naming and theorization of a new phenomenon: film noir. Much of what has been written about the genre since has remained within the orbit of this preliminary assessment. While sympathetic towards the early French critics, this collection of original essays attempts to move beyond their first fascinated look. Beginning with an autonomy of that look—of the 'poujadist' climate that nourished it and the imminent collapse of the Hollywood studio system that gave it its mournful inflection—Shades of Noir re-explores and calls into question the object first constructed by it. The impetus for this shift in perspective comes from the films themselves, viewed in the light of contemporary social and political concerns, and from new theoretical insights. Several contributions analyze the re-emergence of noir in recent years, most notably in the hybrid forms produced in the 1980s by the merging of noir with science fiction and horror, for example Blade Runner and Angel Heart, and in films by black directors such as Deep Cover, Straight out of Brooklyn, A Rage in Harlem and One False Move. Other essays focus on the open urban territory in which the noir hero hides out; the office spaces in Chandler, and the palpable sense of waiting that fills empty warehouses, corridors and hotel rooms. Finally, Shades of Noir pays renewed attention to the lethal relation between the sexes; to the femme fatale and the other women in noir. As the role of women expands, the femme fatale remains deadly, but her deadliness takes on new meanings. Contributors: Janet Bergstrom, Joan Copjec, Elizabeth Cowie, Manthia Diawara, Frederic Jameson, Dean MacCannel, Fred Pfeil, David Reid and Jayne L. Walker, Marc Vernet, Slavoj Zizek.

Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of the Thursday Next series comes a “laugh-out-loud funny” (Los Angeles Times) and “brilliantly original” (Booklist, starred review) novel of a man attempting to navigate a color-coded world. “A rich brew of dystopic fantasy and deadpan goofiness.”—The Washington Post Welcome to Chromatacia, where the Colortocracy rules society through a social hierarchy based on one’s limited color perception. In this world, you are what you can see. Eddie Russet wants to move up. When he and his father relocate to the backwater village of East Carmine, his carefully cultivated plans to leverage his better-than-average red perception and marry into a powerful family are quickly upended. Eddie must content with lethal swans, sneaky Yellows, inviolable rules, an enforced marriage to the hideous Violet deMauve, and a risky friendship with an intriguing Grey named Jane who shows Eddie that the apparent peace of his world is as much an illusion as color itself. Will Eddie be able to tread the fine line between total conformity—accepting the path, partner, and career delineated by his hue—and his instinctive curiosity that is bound to get him into trouble?
Download or read book Shades of Man written by Daymon Nicholas and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-01-25 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry should come from the heart, it is not mechanical nor is it always sweet and sunny just as our lives are not always so. I have had people say my poetry is not very subtle. I am seldom a subltle person. Emotions are not subtle but raw and real. I can still feel the kiss of a remembered lover as if it were happening now. How intense is the pain of loss that causes our heart to slip into the darkness. Below are some comments on a few poems from other poets. TO CATCH THE WIND that is very beautiful heart felt poem...a love that is worth everything even just for a few moments, even if you know it might not last... WONDERING ABOUT THE DAUGHTER So sad, but lovely. I loved your memories you painted into this WHEN WE MEET I hope I feel that way again one day - thank you for reminding me that I once did.

Download or read book THORNS OF THE HEART written by S.L. Sharp and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2023-10-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all, as the characters in this story face unknown tests and challenges at times in our lives from the Thorns of the Heart. These fated times happen to all of us whether we are young, old, rich, or poor. Yes, it is through these severe heavy downpours of pain and suffering in our own lives that we meet up with the Grim Reaper eye to eye and face-off with The Thorns of the Heart. However, as my brother, W.R. Sharp, and I wrote in our novel, life is finite and just like a burning candle, it has a beginning and an ending in its own time. Yes, this is true unless the waxed lit flame is blown out at an unexpected moment before one is ready to say goodbye to their loved ones or to leave their earthly life behind on this earth. At these specific times, and many other times in our lives, we suffer from the Thorns of the Heart. Yet, we must continue to live our lives to the fullest, having infinite hope and forge ahead for not only our children, but for all our loved ones. The sense of our survival allows not only continuity but the preservation of our family legacies in generations to come. Human stamina, we as the authors believe is the secret to one’s life as described in the words of the poem A Candle Burns – A Candle Burns by S. L. Sharp A candle burns in all our hearts flamed with passion, lies and secrets. A candle burns in all our hearts scorched in old romances, friends and acquaintances. A candle burns in all our hearts smoked with bittersweet, sadness and sorrow. A candle burns in all our hearts melted down with memories, regrets and moments. A candle burns in all our hearts burnt-out in love, laughter and yesterdays. Yes, we must encounter each new day of our life through our powers of love, strength, faith and by not believing in never-ending dreams! Only through positive thoughts, a belief system, intestinal fortitude, and physical stamina, can we provide mental body armor against the Thorns of the Heart. This will allow the sun to shine once again within our souls clearing the pathway for all of us to a new life-changing awakening day, only if we keep HANGIN’ ON... W. R. Sharp and S. L. Sharp
Book Synopsis Pedagogy of the Heart by : Martin Kokol
Download or read book Pedagogy of the Heart written by Martin Kokol and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-03-11 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this honest and daring work, Kokol tracks his career beginning as a high school teacher in south Florida, up to a graduate student in Massachusetts, out to a university professor in Utah and finally in New York City, and then to a high school teacher once again in eastern Idaho. What he learns along the way is both surprising and revealing in new ways to an audience that might be in the process of becoming a secondary school teacher. The author has not only spent time documenting his growth as he winds up in very different places in this country, but also puts together an unusually insightful and long overdue blueprint on where we can go as educators in this rising age of Generation Z. What comes out is meant to drum up conversations both in schools of education at the university level as well as out in the trenches of public and private secondary schools. The author reveals not only his professional ideas, but also his personal journey, not at all easy in the zip codes in which he finds himself at different points in his career. His work is wonderfully honest, even refreshing and his readers will most certainly delight at the personal connection he succeeds at making.
