Book excerpt: Shades of My Soul is a glimpse into the experience of the author, an indomitable spirit most often restrained. Within pages of the book his emotion, message, and song is allowed to run free. No more than a 36 year old black man without a name he's faced much adversity in pursuit of himself, identity, hopes, and dreams. The book is a reflection in poetry of many of his dilemmas, insights, passions, angst and ideals, documenting the highs, lows, and spaces in between on his journey to find himself. The collection reflects on main stream America, our society, culture and his perspective as a black man, perhaps rendering a better understanding, a less myopic vision. It is meant to give all personalities, races, people, and cultures insight into him and into themselves. He had hoped to give enough of himself to make people stop and think, if only for a moment, for he knew it is was not in his power to change the world. His poems express great sadness, joy, cynicism and emotion. His writing gives a piece of his heart, himself, his being and that's what truly great writing is, a gift of one's own unique human experience.
