Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Shade-Tree Pests The results obtained in these studies upon the ow of sap are in accord with the observations of Professor Wood reported in Bulletin 24 and add force to his conclusion that more sap ows from a deep hole than from a shallow one. The exact depth to which the hole should be bored is unsettled and may prove to depend upon the size of the tree. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects and Diseases of Trees in the South This publication has been prepared to assist forest managers and home-owners in identifying pests of southern trees. The insects and diseases discussed are thet more common ones attacking forest and ornamental trees. Prompt identification and treatment of these pests may mean the difference between losing or saving a valuable shade tree. Underlying all successful forest and ornamental pest control efforts, however, is the necessity to keep trees in a healthy, vigorous condition. Chemical supression recommendations are not included in this publication. For pesticide information contact the local State or Federal extension forester, entomologist, or pathologist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elm-Leaf Beetle in New York State This bulletin was prepared, first to bring prominently before the public the very destructive nature of this imported insect, and second to demonstrate that it can be controlled without great expense, provided intelligent direction is given to the matter. The life-history and habits Of this beetle have been given some what in detail because unless they are thoroughly understood, it is very easy to adopt means that are only partially successful or futile. In order to give the bulletin a more practical value, short accounts have also been included Of three other insects, which, working with the elm-leaf beetle, have aided greatly in ruining many noble elms. In the portion devoted to remedies prominence has been given to the cost of spraying per tree, the proper apparatus and the time and manner of application. It is surprising to see what mis takes some men make in dealing with insects and how they cling to methods of no value. To offset this tendency, two of the more common fallacies are mentioned and their futility shown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Edible insects have always been a part of human diets, but in some societies there remains a degree of disdain and disgust for their consumption. Although the majority of consumed insects are gathered in forest habitats, mass-rearing systems are being developed in many countries. Insects offer a significant opportunity to merge traditional knowledge and modern science to improve human food security worldwide. This publication describes the contribution of insects to food security and examines future prospects for raising insects at a commercial scale to improve food and feed production, diversify diets, and support livelihoods in both developing and developed countries. It shows the many traditional and potential new uses of insects for direct human consumption and the opportunities for and constraints to farming them for food and feed. It examines the body of research on issues such as insect nutrition and food safety, the use of insects as animal feed, and the processing and preservation of insects and their products. It highlights the need to develop a regulatory framework to govern the use of insects for food security. And it presents case studies and examples from around the world. Edible insects are a promising alternative to the conventional production of meat, either for direct human consumption or for indirect use as feedstock. To fully realise this potential, much work needs to be done by a wide range of stakeholders. This publication will boost awareness of the many valuable roles that insects play in sustaining nature and human life, and it will stimulate debate on the expansion of the use of insects as food and feed.
