Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare look at the brute-force mechanics of deportation in the United States. In December 2017, U.S. immigration authorities shackled and abused 92 African refugees for two days while attempting to deport them by plane to Somalia. When national media broke the story, government officials lied about what happened. Shackled tells the story of this harrowing failed deportation, the resulting class action litigation, and two men's search for safety in the United States over the course of three long years. Through Abdulahi's and Sa'id's firsthand accounts, immigration lawyer Rebecca A. Sharpless brings to life the harsh consequences of the U.S. deportation system and how racism and anti-Blackness operate within it. Sharpless follows the money that ICE funnels into local jails, private contractors, and charter jets, exposing a sprawling system of immigration enforcement that detains and abuses noncitizens at scale. Woven with the wider context of Abdulahi's and Sa'id's stories, this immigration odyssey reveals disturbing truths about Somalia, asylum, and the U.S. court system. Shackled will galvanize readers—attorneys, activists, policymakers, and scholars alike—to call out and dismantle this brutal infrastructure.

The shackles were dominating the cares of my life. There was a lustful power that the shackles were utilizing to keep me entangled in its midst. I couldn't see my way out even if I had tried. I was in complete bondage, and every part of me was shackled to destructive behavior. The shackles were powerful because they had cultivated over time, and they were strong, and there were many of them holding me captive. I was so angry with life and the circumstances that had taken place in my life that I couldn't even begin to learn how to control my behavior. My sanctuary that I had built was full of hatred and destruction. I had started to construct a critical inner voice, and it was like an internal coast that negatively undermined any goals that I started to make that were positive. I started to think that I would never become successful. I started to think that people were all out to get me. I started to criticize everyone that was around me. I found myself always searching for the bad in everyone. The voices in my head were telling me to go ahead and try to kill myself again. This time, I felt that I could make it happen; I would die. I didn't think about my children at all. I felt that they would be better off without me. I had been through too much, and this life didn't mean me any good. Then one day, I go over to my grandmother's house for a barbecue dinner, and the Avon lady was over there, selling my grandmother some bath soaps, and she invites me to church.

Book excerpt: Sentenced to Death for Her Beliefs Mariam Ibraheem was born in a refugee camp in Sudan. Her Muslim father died when she was six, and her mother raised her in the Christian faith. After a traumatic childhood, Mariam became a successful businessperson, married the man she loved, and had a beautiful baby boy. But one day in 2013, her world was shattered when Sudan authorities insisted she was Muslim because of her father’s background. She had broken the law by marrying a Christian man, and she must abandon both her marriage and her son and adopt Islam. Under intense pressure, Mariam repeatedly refused. Ultimately, a Sharia court sentenced her to 100 lashes—and death by hanging. Shackled is the stunning true story of a courageous young mother who was willing to face death rather than deny her faith. Mariam Ibraheem took a stand on behalf of all women who are maltreated because of their gender and all people who suffer from religious persecution. Follow Mariam’s story from life under Islamic law, through imprisonment and childbirth while shackled, to her remarkable escape from death following an international outcry and advocacy that included diplomats, journalists, activists, and even Pope Francis.

Book excerpt: This sourcebook provides the first systematic overview of witchcraft laws and trials in Russia and Ukraine from medieval times to the late nineteenth century. Witchcraft in Russia and Ukraine, 1000–1900 weaves scholarly commentary with never-before-published primary source materials translated from Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian. These sources include the earliest references to witchcraft and sorcery, secular and religious laws regarding witchcraft and possession, full trial transcripts, and a wealth of magical spells. The documents present a rich panorama of daily life and reveal the extraordinary power of magical words. Editors Valerie A. Kivelson and Christine D. Worobec present new analyses of the workings and evolution of legal systems, the interplay and tensions between church and state, and the prosaic concerns of the women and men involved in witchcraft proceedings. The extended documentary commentaries also explore the shifting boundaries and fraught political relations between Russia and Ukraine.

Book excerpt: As a fictional memoir, Zahn Pesh tells the true story of a mentally disabled young man Billy, known affectionately as Vaney and Billys run-in with the San Francisco police. Often using Billy speak, the youths arcane lingo, the author reveals societys neglect and injustices toward such individuals. Wrongly, Billy is accused of making terrorist threats against a paramedic, but few other than Pesh believe the disabled kids story. Avoiding the blame game, Pesh shows how each from personal perspective does his duty, indiscriminately, but nonetheless Billy, or Vaney, suffers because the system fails. Billy is treated like a criminal, not as a patient, which Pesh insists he is. Try as he might, Pesh only meagerly reforms that system, before . . .

Book excerpt: Curvy, slightly self-conscious Claire Redmon is a woman with a few addictions: her dopey dog, inhaler, and fantasies about a big, muscled-up bear of a guy who she just knows is going to sweep her off her feet. Yeah, right. Dating has never been this scientist’s forte, but she’s about to learn that when it comes to bears, reality is always better than fantasy, and two is ALWAYS better than one! Kidnapped from their clan as cubs, tortured and subjected to experiments, Stone and Fury are barely surviving. The alpha werebears know nothing but pain, suffering, and darkness. When they are simultaneously gripped by a sensation neither can explain, not even the strongest tranquilizers can contain their rage. They must escape. No excuses, no regrets. Driven by something they don’t understand, they roar, claw and fight their way to freedom. As they escape the only home they’ve ever known, the bears run headlong into a girl with entrancing eyes and a scent that warms them to the core. A woman that they’ve never seen before, but who seems mysteriously familiar. Suddenly, it all makes sense - that surge must have been fate, and this woman is... their mate! These are two bears who do EVERYTHING together, and don’t take no for an answer. No matter what, they will take her, have her, and make her theirs. Forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After 1688, Britain underwent a revolution in public finance, and the cost of borrowing declined sharply. Leading scholars have argued that easier credit for the government, made possible by better property-rights protection, lead to a rapid expansion of private credit. The Industrial Revolution, according to this view, is the result of the preceding revolution in public finance. In Prometheus Shackled, prominent economic historians Peter Temin and Hans-Joachim Voth examine this hypothesis using new, detailed archival data from 18th century banks. They conclude the opposite: the financial revolution led to an explosion of public debt, but it stifled private credit. This led to markedly slower growth in the English economy. Temin and Voth collected detailed data from several goldsmith banks: Child's, Gosling's, Freame and Gould, Hoare's, and Duncombe and Kent. The excellent records from Hoare's, founded by Sir Richard Hoare in 1672, offer particular insight. Numerous entrants into the banking business tried their hand at deposit-taking and lending in the early 17th century; few survived and fewer thrived. Hoare's and a small group of competitors did both. Temin and Voth chart the growth of the successful banks in the face of frequent wars and heavy-handed regulations. Their new data allows insights into the interaction between financial and economic development. Government regulations such as (a sharply lower) maximum interest rate caused severe misallocation of credit, and a misguided attempt to lighten the nation's debt burden led directly to the South Sea Bubble in 1720. Frequent wars caused banks to call in loans, resulting in a sharply slower economic growth rate. Based on detailed micro-data, the authors present conclusive evidence that wartime borrowing crowded out investment. Far from fostering economic development, England's financial revolution after 1688 did much to stifle it -- the Hanoverian "warfare state" was a key reason for slow growth during Britain's Industrial Revolution. Prometheus Shackled is a revealing new take on one of the most important periods of economic and financial development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his address to the nation on September 20, 2001, President Bush declared war on terrorism and set in motion a detention policy unlike any we have ever seen. Since then, the United States has seized thousands of people from around the globe, setting off a firestorm of controversy. Guantanamo and the Abuse of Presidential Power explores that policy and the intense debates that have followed. Written by an expert on the subject, one of the lawyers who fought -- and won -- the right for prisoners to have judicial review, this important book will be of immense interest to liberals and conservatives alike. With shocking facts and firsthand accounts, Margulies takes readers deep into the Guantánamo Bay prison, into the interrogation rooms and secret cells where hundreds of men and boys have been designated "enemy combatants." Held without legal process, they have been consigned to live out their days in isolation until the Bush administration sees fit to release them -- if itever does. Margulies warns Americans to be especially concerned by the administration's assertion that the Presidentcan have unlimited and unchecked legal authority. Tracing the arguments on both sides of the debate, this vitally important book paints a portrait of a country divided, on the brink of ethical collapse, where the loss of personal freedoms is under greater threat than ever before.
