Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, research, activity, and funding has been devoted to improving the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine. In recent years the diversity of those participating in these fields, particularly the participation of women, has improved and there are significantly more women entering careers and studying science, engineering, and medicine than ever before. However, as women increasingly enter these fields they face biases and barriers and it is not surprising that sexual harassment is one of these barriers. Over thirty years the incidence of sexual harassment in different industries has held steady, yet now more women are in the workforce and in academia, and in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine (as students and faculty) and so more women are experiencing sexual harassment as they work and learn. Over the last several years, revelations of the sexual harassment experienced by women in the workplace and in academic settings have raised urgent questions about the specific impact of this discriminatory behavior on women and the extent to which it is limiting their careers. Sexual Harassment of Women explores the influence of sexual harassment in academia on the career advancement of women in the scientific, technical, and medical workforce. This report reviews the research on the extent to which women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine are victimized by sexual harassment and examines the existing information on the extent to which sexual harassment in academia negatively impacts the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women pursuing scientific, engineering, technical, and medical careers. It also identifies and analyzes the policies, strategies and practices that have been the most successful in preventing and addressing sexual harassment in these settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1998. In 1984, Billie Dziech co-wrote The Lecherous Professor, one of the first books to articulate the problem of sexual harassment on college campuses. Since that time a number of books exploring the issues, cases, and laws have moved the topic into the public eye. This work, the brainchild of a lawyer and an academic, reflects on some of the more controversial and overlooked aspects of sexual harassment and its litigation and law. Chapters cover the legal and regulatory evolution of the issue and its context in higher education at the end of the 20th century; the importance of having colleges approach policy making and harassment by analyzing their own environment; an examination of the treatment of women experiencing harassment, with special focus on women who appear unscathed by it; the situation of the male on campus and the problem of non-meritorious cases; the most familiar myths of consensual relationships and the role of bans in dealing with them; and the contention that the sexual harassment issue has exposed higher education's excesses and contradictions.

This work reflects on a variety of aspects of sexual harassment, its litigation and law, as well as how the issues they demonstrate often have as much to do with linguistics or jurisprudence as with negative action, though there is a great deal of evidence of the latter. The book provides a clear-eyed and detailed assessment of the 'harassment' controversies now plaguing America's universities and colleges.

Book excerpt: This book represents the first comprehensive resource manual for understanding and preventing sexual harassment in the academic community and in the workplace. Studies indicate that sexual harassment is at epidemic proportions in the academy and in the workplace: from 30%–70% of women in U.S. colleges and universities experience some form of sexual harassment (including sexual assaults) each year; a University of Massachusetts study reports 13% of undergraduate women were raped by acquaintances; and 50% of women in the workplace report serious sexual harassment from supervisors and fellow employees. This manual provides the results of research and of practical, effective experience in reducing the occurrence of sexual harassment, investigating complaints, and providing counseling and remedies for the victims. In addition, the authors have compiled bibliographies, audio-visual material, and pedagogical techniques for dealing with sexual harassment in the academy and in the workplace, as well as information and workshop techniques to facilitate training programs.

Studies show it has a negative effect on the ability of women to engage in research at the same level as men.Sexual assault on college campuses is a critical concern for students, policy makers, college administrators, and parents of current and prospective students. Chapter 1 identifies the range and scope of policies and practices related to the investigation and adjudication of sexual assaults on college campuses in the U.S. While many workers in the United States experience workplace sexual harassment--resulting in substantial costs to them and their employers--the extent of sexual harassment and the magnitude of its effects are not fully understood as discussed in Chapter 2.Chapter 3 reviews federal science agency policies and procedures for addressing sexual harassment involving federally-funded STEM researchers and their trainees. The book will also explore lessons learned, enduring challenges, and future opportunities for preventing and mitigating the negative impact of sexual harassment in STEM studies and careers.Chapter 4 is the full transcript of the "Combating Sexual Harassment in Science Act of 2019."Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance. Chapter 5 examines some of the major changes established by the Title IX regulations, highlighting many of the most significant new requirements and noting where those obligations depart from prior ED guidance and the NPRM.

The contributors to this volume come from diverse backgrounds; their disciplines include psychology, sociology, law, English literature, and management. Through teaching about this issue, conducting research, creating policies and procedures, working with administrative agencies (such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Office for Civil Rights), litigating cases, testifying as expert witnesses in Title VII and Title IX cases and working with state legislatures, the various authors have gained much knowledge of sexual harassment. School administrators, teachers, human resources professionals, and managers and supervisors in any workplace will greatly benefit from the insights in this volume. It is a unique compilation of findings from the social science, business, and legal fields. One of the truly unique features of this work is its emphasis on multicultural perspectives. It also reviews legal cases and presents actual tools for sexual harassment policies, procedures, and training programs in educational institutions and workplaces alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bullying in schools is often discussed, but sexual harassment in schools, and how it differs from bullying is often overlooked. In fact, though, sexual harassment (committed both by fellow students and school personnel) is more common and yet more easily and quickly dismissed by those involved, though its consequences for the victim can be profound. This book provides parents, teachers, school officials, and others with a framework comparing and contrasting sexual harassment and bullying as they relate to the behavior, laws, and impact on children. The author describes the responsibility of the school district and how parents and other adults can navigate the schools' policies, barriers, and responsibilities. She argues that children should not be subjected to bullying OR sexual harassment, that it is the school's responsibility to make the harassment or bullying stop, and that parents and other caring adults often need to be involved and advocate for the child, even against resistance from those in the school system. Throughout the book the author uses examples of actual cases that have made it to the courts and have been precedent setting and cases in which she has been involved as an expert witness or as a consultant. Resources for readers are also provided at the end of the book.

Book excerpt: Sexual harassment has long been an unfortunate part of the climate in middle and high schools in the United States. Often considered a form of bullying, sexual harassment by definition involves sex and gender and therefore warrants separate attention. This report provides fresh evidence about students' experiences, including being harassed, harassing someone else, or witnessing harassment. The students share their reactions to their experiences, and also provide ideas for how schools can respond to and prevent sexual harassment.
