Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sexual Dimorphism in the Animal Kingdom: A Theory of the Evolution of Secondary Sexual It must be admitted that my discussion of Sexual Dimorphism in this work is incomplete, and this in two senses. In the first place, evidence of the kind I have endeavoured to collect is in many cases wanting, and has yet to be obtained in the future. The absence of such information is partly due to the difficulty of obtaining it, to the want of opportunities, and partly to the neglect of opportunities and to the absence of any special efforts to obtain it. It is not my intention by such an assertion to throw the blame upon collectors and field naturalists. Their methods of work are naturally adapted to the ends they have in view, and so long as the minute study of habits and conditions of life is generally regarded as of little importance, so long will the collection of specimens and the discovery of species be considered the chief objects of a zoological expedition. It is strange that even from the point of view of selection more attention has not been devoted since Darwin's time to the study of the particular functions or utilities of special characters. When we desire to know fully the irritations and stimulations produced on living tissues by the special habits of the animal, and how its special organs or characters are affected when they come into action, it is clear that the detailed study of the habits of the living animal becomes still more important. Book excerpt: Primary sexual traits, those structures and processes directly involved in reproduction, are some of the most diverse, specialized, and bizarre in the animal kingdom. Moreover, reproductive traits are often species-specific, suggesting that they evolved very rapidly. This diversity, long the province of taxonomists, has recently attracted broader interest from evolutionary biologists, especially those interested in sexual selection and the evolution of reproductive strategies. Primary sexual characters were long assumed to be the product of natural selection, exclusively. A recent alternative suggests that sexual selection explains much of the diversity of "primary" sexual characters. A third approach to the evolution of reproductive interactions after copulation or insemination has been to consider the process one of sexual conflict. That is, the reproductive processes of a species may reflect, as does the mating system, evolution acting on males and on females, but in different directions. In this volume, authors explore a wide variety of primary sexual characters and selective pressures that have shaped them, from natural selection for offspring survival to species-isolating mechanisms, sperm competition, cryptic female choice and sexual arms races. Exploring diverse reproductive adaptations from a theoretical and practical perspective, The Evolution of Primary Sexual Characters will provide an unparalleled overview of sexual diversity in many taxa and an introduction to the issues in sexual selection that are changing our view of sexual processes.

In this volume, Darwin attempts to marry the theories of human evolution with evolutionary theory, exploring evolutionary ethics, evolutionary psychology, differences between sexes, differences between human races, and the relevance of the evolutionary theory to society. Contents include: "Principles Of Sexual Selection", "Secondary Sexual Characters In The Lower Classes Of The Animal Kingdom", "Secondary Sexual Characters Of Insects", "Insects, Continued.-ORDER Lepidoptera.", "Secondary Sexual Characters Of Fishes, Amphibians, And Reptiles", "Secondary Sexual Characters Of Birds", etc. This classic work is being republished now in a new edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author. Charles Robert Darwin (1809 - 1882) was an English geologist, naturalist, and biologist most famous for his contributions to the science of evolution and his book "On the Origin of Species" (1859).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable and unique ways that male and female animals play out gender roles in nature While we joke that men are from Mars and women are from Venus, our gender differences can't compare to those of many other animals. For instance, the male garden spider spontaneously dies after mating with a female more than fifty times his size. And male blanket octopuses employ a copulatory arm longer than their own bodies to mate with females that outweigh them by four orders of magnitude. Why do these gender gulfs exist? Introducing readers to important discoveries in animal behavior and evolution, Odd Couples explores some of the most extraordinary sexual differences in the animal world. Daphne Fairbairn uncovers the unique and bizarre characteristics of these remarkable species and the special strategies they use to maximize reproductive success. Fairbairn also considers humans and explains that although we are keenly aware of our own sexual differences, they are unexceptional within the vast animal world. Looking at some of the most amazing creatures on the planet, Odd Couples sheds astonishing light on what it means to be male or female in the animal kingdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do males and females frequently differ so markedly in body size and morphology?lSex, Size, and Gender Roles is the first book to investigate the genetic, developmental, and physiological basis of sexual size dimorphism found within and among the major taxonomic groups of animals. Carefully edited by a team of world-renowned specialists in the field to ensure a coherence of style and approach between chapters, it presents a compendium of studies into the evolution, adaptive significance, and developmental basis of gender differences in body size and morphology. Adaptive hypotheses allude to gender-specific reproductive roles and associated differences in trophic ecologies, life history strategies, and sexual selection. This "adaptationist" approach is balanced by more mechanistic studies of the genetic, developmental and physiological basis of sexual size dimorphism to provide a comprehensive and authoritative overview of the subject. Throughout the volume the emphasis is on sexual dimorphism in overall size; however, the scope of enquiry encompasses gender differences in body shape, the size and structure of secondary sexual characteristics, patterns of growth (ontogeny), and patterns of gene regulation. This advanced, research level text is suitable for graduate level students and researchers in the fields of evolutionary biology, behavioural ecology, physiology, developmental biology, and genetics. It will also be of relevance and use to non-biologists from fields such as anthropology and gender studies.
