Book excerpt: Molecular diet analysis has the potential to overcome the limitations of traditional methods. I used prey hard parts and molecular methods to examine sex-specific diet trends and rockfish consumption of California sea lions (Zalophus californianus, CSL). Fresh scat samples (n=219) were collected from Año Nuevo Island, CA (ANI), during the summers of 2013 and 2014. Prey taxa were identified from fish otoliths and cephalopod beaks recovered from cleaned scats. Sex of the CSL depositing the scat was assigned via multiplex PCR of a CSL microsatellite and a carnivore Y chromosome marker. Prey species also were identified using multiple loci in a Next Generation Sequencing framework. Twenty-two fish and 4 cephalopod taxa were identified from hard parts; additionally, 38 fish and 7 invertebrate taxa were identified from molecular data including 16 rockfish species. Hard parts data overestimated the occurrence of prey with robust hard parts whereas molecular data identified additional taxa that lacked diagnostic hard parts. More scats were assigned to females than males in both years, which may be indicative of greater female use of ANI or an increased presence of non-reproductive females within the Monterey Bay region during summer. Estimates of rockfish consumption in 2013 were similar to previous studies, but fewer rockfish were eaten in 2014 than previously reported. The increased presence of benthic and midwater prey indicated a greater prey base in Monterey Bay compared with previous studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pinnipeds are primarily aged by marks (e.g., flipper tags, brands) applied to individuals when they are of known age (e.g., pups). Age determination is useful for researchers and managers for various reasons including estimating survival rates and assessing mortality of individuals that interact with fisheries. Age can be determined from unmarked animals by extracting a tooth and counting the number of dentine layers. For most populations, however, relatively few individuals are marked and it is often impractical to extract a tooth. Here we developed sex-specific length-age and weight-age curves for the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus). Additionally, we fit a power law curve for an allometric relationship between length and weight. We obtained length and weight measurements from known-age California sea lions captured at various haulout or rookery sites on islands off California and locations in Oregon and Washington. Gompertz and Von Bertalanffy growth models were compared after fitting them to length-at-age (cm) and weight-at-age (kg) data for male and female sea lions from 1 month to age 16 years and 19 years, respectively. The length-at-age data included initial capture and recapture records of female (n = 8,035) and male (n = 5,813) sea lions. The Von Bertalanffy growth curve was a better model than the Gompertz for length- and weight-at-age for both males and females. The weight-at-age relationship was much more variable than for length due to the smaller sample size and the vagaries of seasonal and annual weight loss and gain. However, a linear relationship for weight for ages 3.5-8 months is very reasonable based on the fitted growth curve. [doi:10.7289/V5/TM-AFSC-312 (http://dx.doi.org/10.7289/V5/TM-AFSC-312)]

Book excerpt: California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) and Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) bred in overlapping habitat areas in southern California until Steller sea lions began to vacate the area in the 1960s. This study analyzed the diets of Steller sea lions and California sea lions over a period of 50 years, from 1949 to 2003. Prey items from individual sea lion diets were collected from the literature for both species and Shannon-Weaver Index values and Simpson Index values were calculated for each study. The Shannon and Simpson indices quantify the same data in different ways. Although the Shannon Index values were affected by sample size, the Simson index was not. Trophic levels of prey were also considered, with California sea lions eating a significantly wider range of trophic levels than Stellers. While the Shannon Index was significantly affected by sample size and thus inconclusive, the Simpson Index, which was not affected by sample size, found that California sea lions have a more diverse diet than Steller sea lions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: El Niño is a meteorological and oceanographic phenomenon, which occurs at irregular intervals in the eastern tropical Pacific. Its most obvious characteristic is the warming of surface waters, which causes enormous disturbances of the marine environment. A severe Niño may also affect continental systems worldwide. This book gathers in a comprehensive way the information available on the effects of the exceptionally strong 1982-83 Niño on a group of marine mammals, the pinnipeds. It presents an analysis of the effects of environmental stress on the populations of top predators. Data and interpretations are based on a most unusual collection of long-term studies of pinniped population dynamics, behavior and ecology which spanned the El Niño event. The responses of pinniped populations to the El Niño disturbance of the marine ecosystem also has important implications for the management and conservation of marine mammal populations.

Book excerpt: “The bones recovered from the middens of the northeastern Pacific shorelines have important stories to tell biologists, marine mammalogists, and those concerned with marine conservation. This volume unearths a wealth of information about the historical ecology of seals, sea lions, and sea otters in the North Pacific that spans thousands of years. It provides fascinating insights into how the world once looked, and how it may one day look again as seals, sea lions, and sea otters reclaim and recolonize their former haunts.”—Andrew Trites, Director, Marine Mammal Research Unit, University of British Columbia “Braje and Rick have assembled a compelling set of case studies on the long-term and complex interactions between people, marine mammals, and environments in the Northeast Pacific. The promise of zooarchaeology as historical science is on full display, as researchers use geochemistry, aDNA, morphometrics, and traditional analytic methods to address questions of utmost importance to the long-term health of coastal ecosystems. If this book doesn't convince conservation biology about the need to take the long view of animal histories and ecosystems into account in developing conservation management plans, I'm not sure what will.”—Virginia L. Butler, Department of Anthropology, Portland State University

Rockfish populations are in a severe decline throughout the Northeastern Pacific, and the need for a deep understanding of their biology, ecology, and management has never been more critical. This book addresses all aspects of our current knowledge of this diverse and interesting group of groundfish species, and it is written clearly and with humor. An outstanding work!"--Larry G. Allen, California State University, Northridge "Quite simply the best account ever of the fascinating, diverse, and valuable rockfishes. If you are interested in the marine fishes of the Pacific Coast, you need this book."--Peter B. Moyle, author of Inland Fishes of California

In other words, it is finding out about the world by reaching out and exploring—sensing by ‘touching’ as opposed to ‘being touched’. In this Research Topic (with cross-posting in both Behavioural Neuroscience and Neurorobotics) we welcomed articles from junior researchers on any aspect of active touch. We were especially interested in articles on the behavioral, physiological and neuronal underpinnings of active touch in a range of species (including humans) for submission to Frontiers in Behavioural Neuroscience. We also welcomed articles describing robotic systems with biomimetic or bio-inspired tactile sensing systems for publication in Frontiers in Neurorobotics.
