Book excerpt: This multi-method dissertation study focused on the experiences of adults who were raised in households where cohabitating male and female parents shared parenting tasks equally or near-equally, dividing childcare based on criteria other than gender. An online survey of 182 females and 52 males over 18 years of age was utilized to examine the relative frequency of shared parenting in the survey sample, to identify subjects who experienced the highest degree of shared parenting for more in depth, qualitative study, and to identify relevant demographic factors such as age and race of those adults who experienced shared parenting as children. Survey data also provided information on the degree of sharing of various childcare tasks at different ages of children, and on the frequency of male and female parents working outside the home at various ages of their children. Ten interview participants were then chosen for qualitative study based on having experienced a high level of shared parenting and their current relationship status. They participated in semi-structured interviews focused on their respective experiences of their parents' sharing of childcare and on the impact of this parenting style on each subject's later gender role identity and relationship satisfaction. Interviews were transcribed verbatim based on the methodology described by McCracken (1988), and common themes were identified. To provide corroborative quantitative data related to gender role identity and relationships satisfaction, interview subjects were also given the Bem Sex Role Inventory and Dyadic Adjustment Scale-7. Scores were measured against the normed samples for these instruments. Adult children of equally parenting partners interviewed for qualitative study were found to have flexible gender role identities and high relationship satisfaction. Survey findings demonstrated that those under forty years of age were twice as likely to have experienced shared parenting, but that shared parenting has not increased in proportion to the increases in mothers in the workforce.

Sex-role identity was measured by the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI), and couples were classified into four types, based on whether each spouse was androgynous or non- androgynous. Androgyny was defined as scores above the normative median on both the femininity and the masculinity subscales of the BSRI. Marital satisfaction scores were obtained for each couple by means of the Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Test. The purpose of the study was to determine whether androgyny of marital partners was related to greater marital satisfaction. Results of the study did not support such a conclusion. The conduct of this study enabled the researcher to redefine the necessary steps for future investigation of the relationship between sex-role identity and marital satisfaction.

Choice This handbook stems, in part, from the author's previously published Women and Women's Issues. Realizing that a book published in 1979 could no longer provide researchers with the up-to-date information they require regarding measures to use in research, Beere set out to revise and update her work. In the process, she soon discovered that the measures identified through her search of the literature produced since her first book was published far exceeds the number that can be realistically described in a single handbook. Thus, she has undertaken a two-volume guide, the first of which, Gender Roles, describes only those measures pertaining to gender roles and attitudes toward gender-related issues. Gender roles are broadly defined to include adults' and children's gender roles, gender stereotypes, marital roles, parental roles, employee roles, and multiple roles. A total of 211 measures are included. In addition to 67 scales still in use that were described in her earlier book, Beere includes scales that are relevant, have evidence of their reliability and/or validity, and are used in more than one published article or ERIC document. If a scale does not satisfy these criteria, but its development is the focus of an article or ERIC document, it is included, as are scales that are unusual or pertain to a topic that would otherwise receive inadequate coverage in this handbook. The scale descriptions follow a standard format that includes the following information: title; author or authors as listed in the earliest publication mentioning the scale; earliest date that the scale is mentioned in a publication; profile of variable being measured; type of instrument; description; sample items; previous and appropriate subjects; scoring information; a description of the development of the measure; information regarding reliability and validity; and a listing of published studies that use the measure. This important new handbook promises to make several important contributions to gender-related research. It will make it easier for researchers to locate quality instruments appropriate for their research, discourage the proliferation of substandard or redundant measures, set some minimal standards for measures used in gender role research, and encourage more research regarding gender roles. Book excerpt: This study examined predictors of relationship satisfaction among a sexually diverse sample of women in dual-earner relationships. Much of the literature has focused on dual earner relationships among White, heterosexual, married men and women (e.g., Barnett & Hyde, 2001; Gilbert, 1993), and only recently have researchers begun to examine relationship satisfaction among gay men and lesbian women (e.g., Eldridge & Gilbert, 1990; Kurdek & Schmitt, 1986), but often continue to neglect bisexual men and women. Furthermore, there has been a greater negative emphasis on understanding work-family conflict as opposed to understanding and facilitating greater work-life balance (Perrone & Worthington, 2001). Therefore, this study made a unique contribution to research by examining positive predictors of relationship satisfaction among lesbian, bisexual and heterosexual women with male or female partners. Numerous variables have been examined in previous research on relationship satisfaction and dual-earner couples. Based on a review of relevant literature, coping behaviors, perceived equity, perceived social support, and combined income were included. Additionally, few studies have considered the effects of gender identity, as opposed to gender roles (which does not translate well into same-sex relationships), or sexual identity development. Thus, two newly developed measures, the Hoffman Gender Scale (Hoffman, Borders, & Hattie, 2000) and the Measure of Sexual Identity Exploration and Commitment (Worthington, Savoy, & Navarro, 2003) allowed for inclusion of these variables. It was hypothesized that all six predictor variables would predict relationship satisfaction for women in both samples. Two samples of women were examined using hierarchical regression analyses: (1) lesbian and bisexual women with female partners, and (2) heterosexual and bisexual women with male partners. Perceived equity and social support from others were significant for women with female partners. For women with male partners, perceived equity, social support from friends, two types of coping behaviors, and gender identity self-acceptance were significant. Although women in the two samples are confronted by many similar issues in the context of dual-earner relationships, it is apparent that the dominant paradigm used to explain relationship satisfaction may be less valid for women with female partners. Limitations to generalizability of these results and implications for future research, training, and clinical practice are discussed.
