Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex, Masculinity and God: The Trialogues is first and foremost an open exploration of the unknown and the forbidden. This exploration is navigated by three men of different existential style, belief and desire; but three men united in struggle to understand the nature of sexual energy, the difficulties of masculine identity, and connection to some other or beyond of the self. The adventure starts with a focus on the division producing what we refer to as masculine and feminine energy or identity. Instead of closing this difference up with intuitions of unification, their discourse plays in sexual difference in order to see what new territories can be discovered in the fields of science, religion and psychoanalysis. In play, what emerges include reflections on the meaning of historical identity, complexities of contemporary identification, paradoxes of new masculine movements, struggles of emotional negativity, disorientation of ethical duty and moral coherence, weird otherness of possible future technologies, and the strange unity of love and death. There are no final answers in this text, as it relates to sexual energy, masculine identity, or metaphysical meaning, but rather an invitation to open fully to even deeper levels of the unknown and the forbidden.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, men have begun to question seriously their traditionally held roles and values. The women's movement, popular books, and male images on television and in films have all contributed to men's uncertainty about themselves. There is a major shift taking place in the perception of sexuality. James Nelson asserts that men and women seek something the sexual revolution did not provide: an understanding of the true meaning of love. This, he claims, is the unfinished business of that revolution.

Book excerpt: A placard carried in the San Diego Gay Parade said it all: "He's your God. They're your rules. You go to Hell." Clearly, there is no longer any commonly held ultimate authority. So merely quoting Bible verses at gays and other "sexual sinners" to prove they are immoral is equally unsuccessful, if not destructive. For the sake of our young people, for the sake of our churches, for the sake of society and our world, Christians must understand the connection of spirituality and sexuality if we are to communicate relevantly to our postmodern culture. Jones gives an objective, honest appraisal of contemporary sexual trends and puts them up against God's clear (and beautiful) design for sex as a spiritual expression. Features and Benefits Helps Christians break out of typical parameters to help them understand and relevantly engage the culture. Nonbelievers will find this book objective and non-offensive, fairly representing postmodern worldviews. Thorough index and bibliography makes this book a powerful resource tool.

Book excerpt: In a culture that exalts the caveman-like qualities of masculinity, most women have stopped expecting anything more. Young men are taught to view women as slaves to their self-centered desires. More than ever, men need to know that they can rise above this sad mediocrity. They desperately need someone to recognize their potential for blending courage and kindness, strength and spiritual sensitivity. With its riveting vision of Christ-centered manhood, God's Gift to Women shows young men how to become the heroic, selfless knight that every woman dreams about. Buried Inside Every Young Man Is the Potential to Change the World Deep within the rugged soul of every young man, there is a warrior in search of his sword and a poet in search of his pen. But heroic, prince-like masculinity is something most women only dream of in today’s perverse and self-serving world. With contagious passion and boldness, Eric Ludy challenges you to forsake modern male mediocrity for Christ-built, warrior-poet manhood—manhood that will capture the heart of a woman and change the course of history.

Book excerpt: Radical feminism has blurred the distinction between the sexes, leaving many men and women today stranded in regard to forming their sex roles. In this book, Elisabeth Elliot brings into focus the separate functions that God assigned to Adam and Eve, which show that the sexes are gloriously and radically unequal. Written as personal advice to her nephew Pete, her convictions on manliness will help you to see the glory and purpose of true masculinity and reassure you as you shape your own Christian sexual identity. - Flyleaf.

Book excerpt: One-fifth of the 21st Century is now history, and sex has morphed into dozens of increasingly murky, bizarre, and fluid forms. In modern terms, manliness and womanliness have become derelict ideas, and we are living in a time of unprecedented gender chaos. In a word, no one knows what a man is; no one knows what a woman is. However, the manliness and womanliness one finds in the Bible, taught and defended by orthodox Christians for millennia, have not changed since the day the words of the Bible were first penned. Five Aspects Theology of Man is Five Aspects Ministry's definitive theological statement concerning masculinity, femininity, and sexuality in the Bible. As in all the Five Aspects Materials, the teaching on masculinity is organized by the five aspects model, and each aspect is studied as God created it, as sin marred it, and as Christ redeemed it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Men today are starved for sexual formation. They've been failed by parents, churches, and culture alike, leading to widespread shame, confusion, and brokenness in the area of sexuality. In The Sex Talk You Never Got, therapist Sam Jolman helps men reconnect their God-given sexuality with innocence, awe, and joy, and shows readers how to celebrate--instead of struggle against--the gift of sexual desire. In our sex-saturated world, it might seem surprising that men need more talk about sex. But the reality is that sexuality is one of the most neglected aspects of men's lives. From the woefully inadequate sex talks many young men receive from parents (little more than an anatomy lesson or a purity lecture, if anything at all) to cultural messages that unhelpfully weave both shame and permissiveness into men's understanding of their own sexuality and masculinity, too many boys and men experience sexual desire as an area of struggle, confusion, and brokenness. But it doesn't need to be this way. God made men to be moved, to live with wonder and awe--and sexual desire must be formed within the context of that design. Sam Jolman, a professional therapist who specializes in men's issues and sexual trauma recovery, shows men the way out of the wilds of sexual struggle. This timely and incisive book will help readers learn about the vital link between sexual desire and their identity as worshipers; regain a wild and vigorous sexuality within the context of God's design; understand how purity culture has needlessly put men in a conflict-ridden relationship with their sexuality; see sexual purity not as the goal but as the preparation for becoming fully alive to beauty, awe, and worship; and discover how to trade shame and confusion for a sexuality that's filled with innocence and wonder. In the Bible, Jesus' greatest kindness was often offered to those suffering sexual harm and brokenness. He offers this same kindness today. He does not want men to repent of their sexual desire. Rather, through reconnecting sexuality with innocence and awe, God opens the door for men to experience the wild joy of desire, rightly ordered toward worship and God's good purposes for their life.

Book excerpt: [A tremendous and controversial undertaking for its time, this book unearths some of the most fascinating connections between the world of Christianity and sexual imagery, adventure and exotica. Without missing a beat, Rocco has seen to it that her readers are not only kept fascinated, but that her own theories and precepts remain strong in the reader's mind. It doesn't matter that her words reach out from a past century. Their ring is clear and their message loud, even by today's standards. Rocco moves from an intrinsic philosophy of the cross and its shape and form in theoretical gendering, while leaving no stone unturned in her discussions of the Triad and Vocabulary of the ancients. This woman finds sex in every nook and cranny of history, letting nothing stand in her way to complete sexual discovery. Her writing style remains clear and easy to read, while packed with the most interesting of facts, theories and suggestions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the Christian community doing a good job of presenting the message of Jesus in a compelling way to men? Women greatly outnumber men in attendance and active participation in American churches. Pastor Mike Erre offers a solution for this imbalance: a thoroughly biblical and engaging theology of manhood that is missing in many churches today. This call to move past cultural definitions of masculinity goes straight to the heart of the issue: Creation--men and women bear the image of God in unique and surprising ways. The fall--men cannot experience significance on their own, so their lives often feel meaningless and empty. Redemption--God redeems a man's work, his sexuality, and his relationships. Unmasking unhelpful stereotypes of masculinity, this presentation of godly manhood inspires men to more effectively grow in Christ's image and empowers women to understand and encourage the men in their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a boy cries, his father trains him in the way of the ancients. He is taught to "man up," and rejects anything feminine in his life. Thus he begins the process of becoming a man in the image of his culture. This transformation comes at the expense of his own calling to reflect the image of God. Men and women, however, were both created in this divine image and were meant to live in harmony rather than enmity. Recently, influential Christian writers and leaders have suggested that men have become too feminized and need to return to their calling to be "real men." Clark believes that this "new masculinity" is in reality a return to the way of the ancients. Drawing from his experiences as a minister, domestic- and sexual- violence prevention advocate, and community leader, Clark suggests that Jesus came to redefine masculinity and resist the cultural view of manhood, power, and oppression.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Colleen Conway looks at the construction of masculinity in New Testament depictions of Jesus. She argues that the New Testament writers necessarily engaged the predominant gender ideology of the Roman Empire, whether consciously or unconsciously. Although the notion of what constituted ideal masculinity in Greek and Roman cultures certainly pre-dated the Roman Empire, the emergence of the Principate concentrated this gender ideology on the figure of the emperor. Indeed, critical to the success of the empire was the portrayal of the emperor as the ideal man and the Roman citizen as one who aspired to be the same. Any person who was held up alongside the emperor as another source of authority would be assessed in terms of the cultural values represented in this Roman image of the "manly man." Conway examines a variety of ancient ideas of masculinity, as found in philosophical discourses, medical treaties, imperial documents, and ancient inscriptions. Manliness, in these accounts, was achieved through self-control over passions such as lust, anger, and greed. It was also gained through manly displays of courage, the endurance of pain, and death on behalf of others. With these texts as a starting point, Conway shows how the New Testament writings approach Jesus' gender identity. From Paul's early letters to the Gospels and Acts, to the book of Revelation, Christian writings in the Bible confront the potentially emasculating scandal of the cross and affirm Jesus as ideally masculine. Conway's study touches on such themes as the relationship between divinity and masculinity; the role of the body in relation to gender identity; and belief in Jesus as a means of achieving a more ideal form of masculinity. This impeccably researched and highly readable book reveals the importance of ancient gender ideology for the interpretation of Christian texts.
