Very puritan in its message; it contains gems of wisdom such as how male masturbation will lead to epilepsy, and as for girls who indulge..."Girls who have formed vicious habits are apt to indulge in the practice of self-abuse at night when going to bed. If there is cause for suspicion, the bedclothes should be quickly and suddenly thrown off under some pretense".

Book excerpt: Should anyone doubt that previous generations entertained odd, unusual, misinformed, even outright bizarre notions about what constituted a healthy mind, a healthy body and a healthy, rational attitude about matters sexual, look no farther than Henry Stanton's treatise Sex: Avoided Subjects Discussed in Plain English. Often hilarious with it's excessive Victorian prudity, the medical and psychological advice given is sometimes downright alarming. Going blind is the least of your worries. It's safe to say that a couple completely ignorant of the intricacies of sex and marriage would fare better than young newlyweds schooled by Stanton.

Download or read book Sex, the Avoided subjects in Life written by Henry Stanton and published by 谷月社. This book was released on 2016-01-07 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SEX The happiness of all human beings, men and women, depends largely on their rational solution of the sexual problem. Sex and the part it plays in human life cannot be ignored. In the case of animals sex plays a simpler and less complex rôle. It is a purely natural and instinctive function whose underlying purpose is the perpetuation of the species. It is not complicated by the many incidental phenomena which result, in man's case, from psychologic, economic, moral and religious causes. Climate, social conditions, individual modes of life and work, alcohol, wealth and poverty, and other factors affect sexual activity in human beings. Sexual love, which is practically unknown to the animals, is a special development of the sex urge in the human soul. The deeper purpose of the sex function in human beings, likewise, is procreation, the reproduction of species. The average man, woman and child should know the essential sex facts in order to be able to deal with the sex problems of life. Of late years there has been a greater diffusion of such knowledge. To a large extent, however, children and adolescents are still taught to look on all that pertains to sex as something shameful and immodest, something not to be discussed. Sex is an “Avoided Subject.”

Book Synopsis Modernist Cultural Studies by : Catherine Driscoll
Download or read book Modernist Cultural Studies written by Catherine Driscoll and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2010-01-03 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many scholars, cultural studies is viewed as a product of postmodern criticism and as the antithesis of modernism. In this brilliant work, Catherine Driscoll argues persuasively that we must view what we call cultural studies as a direct continuation of the innovations and concerns of modernism and the modernists. In making her case, Driscoll provides a fresh take on arguments--some seemingly unresolvable--that pivot on modernism's desire for novelty. Defining modernity as a critical attitude rather than a time period, she describes the many things these ostensibly different fields of inquiry have in common and reveals why cultural studies must be viewed as a fundamentally modernist project. Casting a wide net across the shared interests of modernism and cultural studies, including cinema, fiction, fashion, art, and popular music, Driscoll explores such themes as love and work, adolescence and everyday life, the significance of the everyday, the popular as a field of power, and the importance of representation to identity and experience in modernity.
Book Synopsis How to Make Money by John V. Dunlap originally published in year 1922 by : JOHN V. DUNLAP
Download or read book How to Make Money by John V. Dunlap originally published in year 1922 written by JOHN V. DUNLAP and published by BEYOND BOOKS HUB. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1922, this seemingly straightforward guide for entrepreneurial women quickly descends into attacks on the reader, unconscious self-hatred and a convoluted sales pitch for a door-to-door pamphlet business. “There must be times in your life when you have flashes of realization,” John V. Dunlap writes (perhaps of himself), “when you must see the fallacy of your ideas. You must realize the wonderful experience and pleasure which you are missing. You are going through life blindly.” This existential angst comes after a variety of short chapters on money-making schemes (a tea shop, a lamp shade business, doughnuts, dyeing, necktie fabrication, among other crafty, Etsy-like suggestions). A section titled, “Would You Like to Own a Shirt Factory” reads like Richard Brautigan: “Every man has trouble buying a shirt that will fit him. One wise girl knew this and turned it into real profit.” Mr. Dunlap spends the last half of How to Make Money convincing the reader to sell books by his publisher, Social Mentor Publications. “Do you know that salesmen are made, not born?” he writes. “Do you know that the demand for salesmen always has and always will be three times greater than the supply?” How to Make Money is a fascinating work infused with the roaring twenties nuttiness of The Great Gatsby, and yet Mr. Dunlap’s frustrated musings and schemes will undoubtedly be familiar to the contemporary wealth seeker.
