It is the result of investigations made by an impartial inquirer in this city for the purpose of ascertaining to what extent that bane of city life, sewer-gas, is responsible for sickness and discomfort. An inquiry into the effects of the poisonous gas in a single instance in the month of July, 1879, suggested a possibility of similar results in other houses than the one examined. Investigations from that time were systematically pursued, and the astonishing prevalence of sewer-gas poisoning, and consequent illness and death in every part of the city, among all classes and in houses of the best as well as the poorest construction, gradually developed. These continued through the remainder of the Summer and Fall of that year, and were again taken up and pursued during the Winter just passed.
