Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Severn Tunnel Junction was the largest freight marshalling yard on the Western Region of British Railways, once stretching for over two miles along the Welsh bank of the River Severn. At its height it was a goods yard, junction, station and loco depot, but it was an important railway community and small town as well. With over 150 photographs this book describes the beginnings of the yard within the wider historical context and discusses the expansion of the site and the impact of the two World Wars. It documents the methods of working at the junction and recalls the locos, freight and passenger trains that travelled the lines. Finally, it remembers the people who worked and lived here.

Book excerpt: The Bridgewater Canal is distinguished as England's first canal and its development marked the beginning of a transport revolution that provided a crucial foundation for industrial and commercial development in England. Since its completion in 1765, the canal has been regularly used by commercial and passenger traffic; it was one if the major routes of the North West that helped Manchester to develop as a centre of trade and industry in the 19th century. In The Duke's Cut: The Bridgewater Canal, Cyril J. Wood recounts the fascinating history of the Bridgewater canal from its conception and construction to its subsequent successes including its use as a leisure waterway today. His detailed commentary is complemented by his descriptive guide to cruising the canal and valuable navigational information. Illustrated with more than 150 images, this comprehensive history and guide will appeal to local historians and canal enthusiasts alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High speed rail is already being constructed or been used in many nations. Britain's exile from this would mean losing out to global competitors. The long term option in investing in high speed rail would transform and allow Britain to compete globally and for national economic prosperity. Such investment in faster and more convenient journeys between the major cities and international networks will achieve two objectives; supporting companies and wealth creators and also better connect communities. Further upgrades of existing lines can provide additional capacity but growth in demand looks set to outstrip the pace of this and is seen as a short term approach unable to meet long term challenges. The choice is not between building new lines or not but what type of new line to build and new lines only built to enable conventional speeds would certainly fail to reap the economic rewards offered by high speed. HS2 is also about enough capacity for passengers - those on crowded inter city trains will increasingly be forced to stand for long periods and for commuters who eventually will be unable to get on their trains at peak times. There are further benefits of increasing rail freight, getting lorries off roads and saving carbon. The Government is also committed to developing a national high speed rail network with the lowest feasible impacts on local communities and the natural environment. In response to the consultation process there have been changes - additional tunnelling and alignment of the route in a number of places. The Government wishes to see further engagement with local people as the project progresses and as further environmental assessment is undertaken. The Government wants to reassure people that the project is both affordable and can be delivered to time and budget

Book excerpt: In the late 1830s three railway companies sought to establish a presence in Derby and one was the North Midland Railway which constructed a line to Leeds via Chesterfield and Rotherham, but bypassing Sheffield. Railway pioneer George Stephenson was heavily involved with the project. The North Midland became absorbed into the Midland Railway in the 1840s. This book traces the history, mainly during the steam era, of the North Midland route from Chesterfield to Rotherham, the 'Old Road', and the connecting lines built through Sheffield, the 'New Road', which became vital and busy arteries of the Midland Railway, later the LMS and BR. Informative captions enhance the pictures, which are not just of trains and locomotives but also cover stations, signal boxes, freight yards and tunnels, the whole giving a good account of the line's fortunes over the years. This book is the second part of a trilogy - part one covered Derby to Chesterfield, while part three will look at the Rotherham to Leeds section. Together the books give an unrivalled comprehensive photographic coverage of steam days on this very important route.
