Download or read book The Non-Aligned Movement and the Cold War written by Natasa Miskovic and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of non-alignment and peaceful coexistence was not new when Yugoslavia hosted the Belgrade Summit of the Non-Aligned in September 1961. Freedom activists from the colonies in Asia, Africa, and South America had been discussing such issues for decades already, but this long-lasting context is usually forgotten in political and historical assessments of the Non-Aligned Movement. This book puts the Non-Aligned Movement into its wider historical context and sheds light on the long-term connections and entanglements of the Afro-Asian world. It assembles scholars from differing fields of research, such as Asian Studies, Eastern European and Southeast European History, Cold War Studies, Middle Eastern Studies and International Relations. In doing so, this volume looks back to the ideological beginnings of the concept of peaceful coexistence at the time of the anticolonial movements, and at the multi-faceted challenges of foreign policy the former freedom fighters faced when they established their own decolonized states. It analyses the crucial role Yugoslav president Tito played in his determination to keep his country out of the blocs, and finally examines the main achievement of the Non-Aligned Movement: to give subordinate states of formerly subaltern peoples a voice in the international system. An innovative look at the Non-Aligned Movement with a strong historical component, the book will be of great interest to academics working in the field of International Affairs, international history of the 20th century, the Cold War, Race Relations as well as scholars interested in Asian, African and Eastern European history.

It dilates upon Nehru's eloquent theoretical exposition of non-alignment at the Belgrade Summit, Shastri's concern with regional issues at Cairo and Mrs. Gandhi's espousal of restructuring the international order at Lusaka and at the subsequent conferences as well as Rajiv's optimistic leadership towards the unfinished task of his mother. Special attention has been given to India's performance at the New Delhi summit. It highlights Indian efforts to resolve the various contentious issues that had plagued the movement since the last summit at Havana in 1979 and explains why the Summit was hailed as the fresh beginning of the NAM. Detailed analysis of the post New Delhi Summit era encompassing India's Chairpersonship of the movement under Rajiv Gandhi's leadership, his dynamic support to the African cause at Harare in 1986 and his contribution to moot a Planet Protection fund at the second Belgrade Summit 1989. It also incorporates Mr. Narashimha Rao's strong stand against attaching conditionalities to all forms of assistances, intellectual property rights, terrorism, etc., at the Jakarta Summit 1992.

Accommodating this need and the many other pressures on land while maintaining biodiversity, ecosystems, and cultural landscapes is a matter of continuing concern and debate in Europe. The changing nature of agriculture, concerns about agricultural subsidies and surpluses, food and water quality issues, and discussion of the future of the European Union (EU)'s Common Agricultural Policy have all increased the intensity of this debate in recent years. Through its discussion of how best to achieve sustainable land use, Agriculture and Sustainable Land Use in Europe tackles this wide range of issues, examining problems faced by the EU concerning the future of rural communities, the maintenance of an attractive and diverse countryside, and more. This work comprises papers presented at two conferences organised by groups of European Environmental Advisory Councils. These papers offer the reader access to a broad range of experience and points of view, making Agriculture and Sustainable Land Use in Europe a contribution of particular value to the debate on these issues.
