Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Annual Report of the State Entomologist of Montana: December, 1903 In view of the great economic importance of grasshoppers and because of the unusual demand for information concerning them, we have given them prominence in this report. We renew our statement of willingness to answer inquiry te garding insect pests. Such requests for information should always be accompanied by specimens of the insects that are doing the damage and a statement of the facts necessary for our information in making recommendations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourteenth Annual Report of the State Entomologist of Montana: December, 1916 The first quarantine in Montana was established in 1913, and since that time further information regarding the alfalfa weevil has been accumulated by those who have been giving special attention to the subject. During the spring of 1915 a conference of the official entomologists of the western States was held at Salt Lake City, together with representatives of the State of Utah, the United States Bureau of Entomology and the Utah Experiment Station, for the purpose of acquiring all the information possible, exchanging ideas, and, if possible, agreeing on uniform regulations to be recommended to the several States for their consideration. The conference was very profitable for all and uniform recommendations were adopted. These recommendations became the basis of a revised quarantine proclamation, which was issued by Governor S. V. Stewart on June 24, 1916. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventeenth Annual Report of the State Entomologist of Montana Box Elder Bug (Leptocoris trivittatus Say.). This insect ordinarily confines itself to the box elder but was reported to have injured fruit in the vicinity of Joliet. Cottony Maple Leaf-Scale Pulvinaria acericola Walsh Riley). This louse has been known to be present on shade trees in the cities of Missoula and Kalispell for some years but during the present season there was a great increase and injury was reported. Bedbugs Cimex lectularius Linn.). More than the normal number of requests for advice on how to rid the house of bugs, came to us this season. The cyanide fumigation method, although it necessitates some danger and expense, is recommended and excellent results have been obtained. Chinch Bug Blissus lencojjterus Say.). The country south of Glasgow where chinch bugs were abundant in 1911 was examined thoroughh again this season but no evidence of a reoccurrence of tlie pest could be found. Cabbage Louse Aphis hvassicae Linn.). The cabbage louse was observed to be much more abundant than for some time past. Inquiries were numerous as to how this insect could be destroyed. False Chinch Bug (Xysius ericae Schill). On account of being mistaken for the real chinch bug (Blissiis lencopterus Say.) this insect causes alarm wherever found. Although it is a bad pest in gardens, in no way does it approach its eastern relative in the amount of destruction which it can cause. Oyster Shell Bark Louse (Lepidosaplies uhni Linn.). The oyster shell scale was present in less than normal numbers in the Bitter Root Valley in 1919. Sugar-Beet Root-Louse Pejnphins hetae Doane). This was more abundant than it has been since 1916 and damage was done in the beet-growing districts of the state. Moths And Butterflies (Lepidopteea). Imported Cabbage Worm (Pontia rapac Linn.). This caused an increased loss to the cabbage crop. Many calls for information on control methods were received and it is safe to say that this insect has not been so plentiful for several years past. Corn Ear Worm (Heliothis obsoleta Fab.). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventh Biennial Report, 1927-1928 According to the wording of the creative legislative act it is the duty of the Montana State Board of Entomology to investigate and study the dis semination by insects of diseases among persons and animals, said investiga tion having for its purpose the eradication and prevention of such diseases. The study of insects which do not transmit disease and the control of insects attacking crops are therefore not within the province of this board but are taken care of by the Agricultural Experiment Station and the State Entomologist. The State Board of Entomology is composed of three members; the Secretary of the State Board of Health, the State Veterinary Surgeon and the State entomologist, and therefore brings together in one organization the three State Officials who are most concerned with the control of human diseases, animal diseases and insects which may transmit disease. The field headquarters for the Montana State Board of Entomology is at Hamilton, Montana, where a modern, fire-proof, well equipped laboratory was built this past year with funds provided by the 1927 legislative session. The laboratory is occupied jointly by two staffs of investigators, one employed by the Montana State Board of Entomology and the other by the U. S. Public Health Service. These two organizations have worked together under an informal plan of co-operation since 1921. The State Board of Entomology has been fortunate indeed in securing this co-operation; the U. S. Public Health Service has not only been generous in its financial support of the work but has also provided highly 'trained investigators whose researches have advanced the work far more rapidly than could have been expected if the State Board had continued to work alone. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blood-sucking insects are the vectors of many of the most debilitating parasites of man and his domesticated animals. In addition they are of considerable direct cost to the agricultural industry through losses in milk and meat yields, and through damage to hides and wool, etc. So, not surprisingly, many books of medical and veterinary entomology have been written. Most of these texts are organized taxonomically giving the details of the life-cycles, bionomics, relationship to disease and economic importance of each of the insect groups in turn. I have taken a different approach. This book is topic led and aims to discuss the biological themes which are common in the lives of blood-sucking insects. To do this I have concentrated on those aspects of the biology of these fascinating insects which have been clearly modified in some way to suit the blood-sucking habit. For example, I have discussed feeding and digestion in some detail because feeding on blood presents insects with special problems, but I have not discussed respiration because it is not affected in any particular way by haematophagy. Naturally there is a subjective element in the choice of topics for discussion and the weight given to each. I hope that I have not let my enthusiasm for particular subjects get the better of me on too many occasions and that the subject material achieves an overall balance.

Off-target and other negative effects of biological control are also dealt with. Chapters contributed by leading international researchers and practitioners in all areas of biological control afford the book a breadth of coverage and depth of analysis not possible with a single author volume. Combined with the use of other experts to review chapters and editorial oversight to ensure thematic integrity of the volume, this book provides the most authoritative analysis of biological control published. Key aspects addressed include how success may be measured, how successful biological control has been to date and how may it be made more successful in the future. With extensive use of contemporary examples, photographs, figures and tables this book will be invaluable to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as being a `must' for all involved in making biological control successful.
