Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventeenth Annual Report of the Secretary of the State Horticultural Society of Michigan, 1887 During the year 1886, in which the State of Michigan celebrated her semi centennial, there was brought together a large amount of information of great historical value, that has been compiled in a volume issued by the State. The article devoted to horticulture, owing to the limited time for preparation, and the small space allotted to it, was but the merest epitome of our half century's progress in this art. It was this fact, coupled With the earnest desire to preserve a more complete account of the early undertakings in orchard planting, that led the Michigan State Horticultural Society to in quire into the best method of securing this historical material and placing it in convenient form for future reference. By unanimous vote of the Executive Board of the Society, Mr. T. T. Lyon, the President of the Society, was invited to contribute a paper for our sixteenth volume of proceedings, embodying the prominent features connected With the rapid development of the horticultural interests of Michigan in the half century just closed. No man in the State had been so thoroughly iden tified with the progress in fruit culture, and no one had done so much to place Michigan in the front rank in the production of the best fruits as Presi dent Lyon. He undertook the work, and the following pages testify to the painstaking labor and indefatigable research brought to bear upon the his tory. It was found impossible to give completeness to the enterprise if the preparation was hastened so as to make the compilation a contribution to the volume for 1886, so that the work was continued into this year and is made the leading feature of our seventeenth volume of proceedings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Seventh Annual Report of the Secretary of the State Horticultural Society of Michigan, 1907 The thirty-seventh annual meeting of the Michigan State Horticultural Society, held in the auditorium in the city of Battle Creek, December 3, 4 and 5, is conceded by all present to have been the most enjoyable and profitable of any in the history of the society. Nearly every part of the State was represented in the attendance, besides delegates and visitors from 12 other states and Canada. The presence of such national authorities as J. H. Hale of Connecticut, W. H. Collingwood and Prof. U. P. Hedrick of New York and W. W. Farnsworth of Ohio added to the interest in the excellent program. The display of fruit, mostly apples and pears, was large and the specimens were of unusual excellence. The competitive fruit judging and identifying by a dozen students from the agricultural college, with Prof. Hedrick of Geneva, New York as referee, resulted in awarding the following cash prizes: First, $15, B. B. Pratt of Benton Harbor; second, $10, F. M. Barden, Casco; third, $5, A. L. Darbee, Caro. The society business meeting resulted in the reelection of President C. B. Cook of Owosso, Secretary C. E. Bassett of Fennville, Treasurer James Satterlee of Lansing, Vice President R. A. Smythe of Benton Harbor and O. S. Bristol of Almont as a new member of the executive board in place of Geo. E. Rowe, who had served the two terms allowed by the constitution of the society. The permanent fund of the society was increased at this meeting to $5,000, which meets the requirements in the will of the late T. T. Lyon of South Haven. It was with deep regret that the word was received that Prof. S. W. Fletcher, horticulturist at the Agricultural College, has accepted the position of dean of the Virginia experiment station, to take effect at once. One of the delightful social affairs of the meeting was the banquet given at the sanitarium. The banquet tables were handsomely decorated with fruits and flowers - the crimson blossoms of poinsettias, alternating with mounds of red and white grapes, golden pears and rosy apples, while the menu reflected the principles of the institution - the return to Nature's products and exploited to the complete satisfaction of the guests their epicurean value. Vice President Monroe was in conduct of most of the sessions. Mayor Good rich of Grand Haven made a singularly apt address of welcome, to which Mr. Monroe responded. The plan to provide for a display of strawberries for premiums offered by the society was highly successful, the exhibit embracing almost one hundred boxes, nearly all of the very finest and largest fruit. This was true of all the competitive entries. The Agricultural college placed on exhibition sixteen varieties, mostly new and unknown kinds, which were described by Prof. Taft in his talk upon Promising new strawberries It is doubtful if this display was ever exceeded by anything of the kind in Michigan at least. The name of the society shall be the Michigan State Horticultural society; and its territory shall be the state of Michigan. Its objects shall be the development of an adequate appreciation of the peculiar adaptation of the soils and climate of the state to the pursuit of horticulture in all its branches; and the collection and dissemination of information bearing upon the theory and practice of the same, as well as upon the arts and sciences directly or indirectly associated therewith, or calculated to elevate or improve the practice thereof. Article II. - Officers And Mode Of Election. The officers of the society shall be a president, a secretary, and a treasurer, together with an executive board of six members, aside from the president, secretary, and treasurer, who shall be ex officio members of the said board. Said board shall designate one of its members as vice-president. The officers shall be elected by ballot. Article III. - A Quorum. Four members of the executive board shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business at any meeting of said board: Provided, That each of the members thereof shall have been notified, in the usual manner, of the time, place, and object of such meeting. Article IV. - Annual Meeting And Election Of Officers. The annual meeting of the society, for the election of the officers specified in Article II., shall occur on the first Wednesday of December in each year, and the officers then elected shall enter upon the discharge of their duties as such, on the first day of January next ensuing; but in case of a failure to elect at that time, such election may be held at a subsequent time at an adjourned meeting, or at a meeting of the society called for that purpose, in the usual manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty-Second Annual Report of the Secretary of the State Horticultural Society of Michigan for the Year 1912 The year That has gone by has been one where many of us have met our "Waterloo" and I feel sometimes as though in many respects we have been a failure in another way. Personally I feel that way, and especially as by my advice a good many in years past have been induced to go into the apple business and today they are plying me with questions and advice as to how they can get out of the orchard business what they were to believe was in it but which they have been unable to secure. This past year they have raised their apples; they have got fruit but there are no buyers in the field, and they do not know what to do with their products. This is not the condition that is peculiar to our own state alone, it is general. Orchardists of other states have met with the same difficult I cannot believe that the comparatively few hundreds of people who have been induced to go into this business have been able to raise so much fruit that there is such an enormous over-production as to cause the present low price. Especially do I think so when there are right here in our own country ninety-five million of people to eat it for nine months of the year. The whole trouble I believe is that there is something wrong in the marketing. If we can do anything to help that end of the problem it is the thing we must do. We must try to get at the bottom of this matter and inaugurate some plans or methods by which our fruits can be marketed and we receive something like a price commensurate with the costs of production. This will probably all come out later in the discussion and now without any further words go on and take up the first thing on the program. Before we take up the regular program, the first topic for consideration is: "How Best to Feed the Apple Orchard," by Mr. Luther E. Hall, of Ionia, who will address you. How Best To Feed The Apple Orchard. Luther E. Hall, Ionia. Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen - When your Secretary asked me to prepare something on this topic, he intimated that he would like to have it very brief and to the point. Now the topic of feeding the apple orchard may be made very brief, and I will try to be brief, but I hope I may be able to contribute a few hints that may help in feeding the apple orchard so as to get it to a condition of productiveness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty-First Annual Report of the Secretary of the State Horticultural Society of Michigan: For the Year 1921 The program for the midwinter meeting was arranged for and held during Farmers' Week at M. A. C. Assistance was given in every possible way by the Faculty and Horticultural Department staff to make this meeting a success. The program was arranged to discuss topics not taken up at the annual meeting, yet interesting to the growers. While the attendance was not as large as at some previous meetings, yet it proved a very important and interesting one, as at this meeting, a new policy was established in appointing a horticultural committee representing the different fruit interests, to co-operate with the Horticultural Department in working out experiments to projects which would meet the needs of the greatly increased and growing interest along their lines, a report of which has been given. The secretary has arranged for calling and attended all of the meetings of this committee. Following the invitation to have the summer tour through Oceana and Mason Counties, this was arranged for, making the general starting point from the Graham Experimental Station at Grand Rapids, when a large number of the members and their families enjoyed an opportunity of observing the experimental projects which are being carried on. There were 25 machines filled with enthusiastic Horticulturists' starting from the station and this number grew to 60 in Oceana and Mason Counties. The splendid fruit crops demonstrating the results in the applications of good cultural practices and the splendid hospitality shown by the citizens of these counties will long be remembered by those making this trip. In behalf of the society and the Horticultural committee, an invitation was extended to the State Board of Agriculture to meet with your committee and some growers at the Graham Experiment Station. The invitation was accepted and an informal meeting was held, which gave an opportunity for the members of the State Board and your committee and other growers present to get acquainted. The committee very briefly presented an outlining of the problems and needs of the growers present and future, and the necessity of support in working out these problems with a greatly increased growing interest along horticultural lines throughout the state. The work being carried on was heartily endorsed by the members of the Board and assistance was assured in enlarging the scope of the work to meet the demands. The secretary assisted in making out a program for the Huron Fruit Belt Horticultural Society held at Almont November 8, which was well attended, considering the day, about 50 being present. Prof. Marshall and Prof. Dutton and Treasurer Munson addressing the meeting. Other meetings were held where the extension work in fruit growing was carried on and the interest of the society looked after as well.
