Book excerpt: The “founding fathers” of babyganics, the much-loved brand of baby-safe household and body care products, share some surprising news: “Green” isn’t necessarily baby-safe. But here’s the good news: What’s safe and good for a baby is always good for the planet. It’s a simple change in perspective, and everybody wins! Now these authors have written a vital guide to creating a baby-safe home, diet, and environment that’s healthy and happy for your new family. When a new baby comes home, you suddenly start paying close attention to everything he touches and everything that touches him. From cleaning your floors and countertops to giving a bath or applying sunscreen to grooming your pets—now that a baby’s involved, everything raises the same simple question: How safe is it for my family? Kevin Schwartz and Keith Garber know babies. And they know safety—especially when it comes to protecting, moisturizing, nourishing, and cleaning babies. In BabySafe in Seven Steps, they’ve applied their family-tested and expert research to these seven critical categories: • MOMMY DETOX: How to reduce exposure to additives, preservatives, and chemicals in food and beauty products while pregnant—plus essential tips for safeguarding the nursery • “CRIB” IMPROVEMENT: Here’s help in identifying toxins under the sink, in the garage, or on the patio—and how to mix your own DIY baby-safe cleaners • PAMPERED BABIES: Advice on selecting the best diapers, soaps, shampoos, and laundry detergent for your little one • PLAYING SAFE: How to avoid PVCs in toys, understand “choking hazard” warnings, and ensure that rattles, teething rings, and other gear are safe • FAMILY FOOD FUN: Helpful hints for choosing, cooking, and storing the most nutritious snacks, meals, and treats • FUR BABIES MATTER, TOO: Learn the baby-safe ways to groom, bathe, and play with your pets • WORLD-PROOFING: How to fertilize your lawn without pesticides, keep bugs away naturally, protect baby skin from the sun, and prepare for dirty parks, playrooms, and changing stations. These seven steps make it easy and affordable to create an environment that will allow your baby to develop and explore freely and safely—so that you can relax and enjoy every special moment!

Book excerpt: Autonomous maintenance is an especially important pillar of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) because it enlists the intelligence and skills of the people who are most familiar with factory machines-- equipment operators. Operators learn the maintenance skills they need to know through a seven-step autonomous maintenance program. Most companies in the West stop after implementing the first few steps and never realize the full benefits of autonomous maintenance. This book contains comprehensive coverage of all seven steps--not just the first three or four.It includes:An overview of autonomous maintenance features and checklists for step audits to certify team achievement at each AM step.TPM basics such as the six big losses, overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), causes of losses, and six major TPM activities. An implementation plan for TPM and five countermeasures for achieving zero breakdowns.Useful guidelines and case studies in applying AM to manual work such as assembly, inspection, and material handling.Integrates examples from Toyota, Asai Glass, Bridgestone, Hitachi, and other top companies.By treating machines as partners and taking responsibility for them, you get machines that you can rely on and help maintain an energized and responsive workplace. For companies that are serious about taking autonomous maintenance beyond mere cleaning programs, this is an essential sourcebook and implementation support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly practical self-help book that draws on the universal power and energy of angels, taking readers on a seven-step journey to reconnect with themselves and live happier, more fulfilled lives. Angels have appeared in almost every culture, faith and religion since the dawn of mankind. In this rapidly changing world of uncertainty, one thing is for sure: a universal source of guidance and love is something that we could all benefit from. After explaining the many ways in which angel energy can be experienced and the immense value in becoming more attuned to their “light”, Chrissie takes readers through the positive qualities related to each of the seven Archangels: creating new beginnings (Gabriel); finding inspiration (Jophiel); grounding and protecting yourself (Michael); healing yourself (Raphael); learning to love yourself (Chamuel); embracing joy and transformation (Zadkiel); and feeling more at peace with yourself and the world (Uriel). Each of the chapters offers not only fascinating insight into the Archangel in hand – including key associations such as chakras and crystals – but also practical guidance on how to connect with its life-enhancing energy, whether through reflective questions, inspiring prayers and affirmations, or evocative visualizations and meditations (also available as downloads). This uplifting, experience-driven book guides readers in a grounded way throughout their journey, leaving them with a deeper sense of understanding, meaning, spirituality and purpose in their lives.

Book excerpt: Two strangers collide on an empty country road…accident or fate? Political strategist Rachel Stanton, jaded and disillusioned by the scratching, clawing, and mudslinging of the campaign trail, books a week at the Springdale Ranch for a much-needed vacation. Springdale sounds like just the place to exorcise unhappy childhood memories and straighten out her head. Shivley McCoy has spent the last four years casting out her own painful past, working and sweating to make her ranch a successful business venture. She has nothing in common with fast-living Rachel Stanton, and after their inauspicious first meeting, is quite certain she’ll never see her again. Shivley is thrown when she comes face-to-face with Rachel among her group of new arrivals, and sparks of a most unexpected sort ignite. We have to stop meeting like this. People might talk. And what would they say? That we're madly in love and can't bear to be apart.

Book excerpt: Proceedings of the Second International Clean Air Congress documents the information and experiences exchanged at the Second International Clean Air Congress held in Washington, D.C. on December 6-11, 1970. This book compiles technical papers of five representatives from the national non-governmental air pollution prevention association of Argentina, France, West Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom that aims to determine how they might work together cooperatively to contribute to the conservation of the world's air resources The topics discussed include the Swedish experiences on sensory evaluation of odorous air pollutant intensities; chronic fluoride intoxication due to air pollution; and organic ozone reactions as singlet oxygen sources. The emission and control of air pollutants from the incineration of municipal solid wastes and gaseous plume diffusion about isolated structures of simple geometry are also covered. This publication is a good reference for environmentalists and students interested in the scientific, technological, and administrative aspects of air pollution control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pollution of air, soil, and waterways has become a primary concern of urban environmental policy making, and over the past two decades there has emerged a new era of urban policy that links development with ecological issues, based on the notion that both nature and the economy can be enhanced through technological changes to production and consumption systems. This book takes a new look at this application of "ecological modernization" to contemporary urban political-ecological struggles. Considering policy processes around land-use in urban watersheds and pollution of air and soil in two disparate North American "global cities," it criticizes the dominant belief in the power of markets and experts to regulate environments to everyone’s benefit, arguing instead that civil political action by local constituencies can influence the establishment of beneficial policies. The book emphasizes ‘subaltern’ environmental justice concerns as instrumental in shaping the policy process. Looking back to the 1990s—when ecological modernization began to emerge as a dominant approach to environmental policy and theory—Desfor and Keil examine four case studies: restoration of the Don River in Toronto, cleanup of contaminated soil in Toronto, regeneration of the Los Angeles River, and air pollution reduction in Los Angeles. In each case, they show that local constituencies can develop political strategies that create alternatives to ecological modernization. When environmental policies appear to have been produced through solely technical exercises, they warn, one must be suspicious about the removal of contention from the process. In the face of economic and environmental processes that have been increasingly influenced by neo-liberalism and globalization, Desfor and Keil’s analysis posits that continuing modernization of industrial capitalist societies entails a measure of deliberate change to societal relationships with nature in cities. Their book shows that environmental policies are about much more than green capitalism or the technical mastery of problems; they are about how future urban generations live their lives with sustainability and justice.
