Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About one-third of countries covered by the IMF's African Department are members of the CFA franc zone. With most other countries moving away from fixed exchange rates, the issue of an adequate policy framework to ensure the sustainability of the CFA franc zone is clearly of interest to policymakers and academics. However, little academic research exists in the public domain. This book aims to fill this void by bringing together work undertaken in the context of intensified regional surveillance and highlighting the current challenges and the main policy requirements if the arrangements are to be carried forward. The book is based on empirical research by a broad group of IMF economists, with contributions from several outside experts.

Book excerpt: This books presents a theory of economic development very different from the "stages of growth" hypothesis or strategies emphasizing foreign aid, trade, or regional association. Leaving these aside, the author breaks new ground by focusing on the use of domestic capital markets to stimulate economic performance. He suggests a "bootstrap" approach in which successful development would depend largely on policy choices made by national authorities in the developing countries themselves. Central to his theory is the freeing of domestic financial markets to allow interest rates to reflect the true scarcity of capital in a developing economy. His analysis leads to a critique of prevailing monetary theory and to a new view of the relation between money and physical capital—a view with policy implications for governments striving to overcome the vicious circle of inflation and stagnation. Examining the performance of South Korea, Taiwan, Brazil, and other countries, the author suggests that their success or failure has depended primarily on steps taken in the monetary sector. He concludes that monetary reform should take precedence over other development measures, such as tariff and tax reform or the encouragement of foreign capital investment. In addition to challenging much of the conventional wisdom of development, the author's revision of accepted monetary theory may be relevant for mature economies that face monetary problems.

Cities and, on a smaller scale, neighborhoods, building managers and firms are now adopting technologies and information systems to help achieve the energy, economic, social and environmental transition. This volume gathers contributions on the key organizational success factors for this transition. To do so, it analyzes the role of information systems, use of data, and technological assistance solutions from multiple perspectives. The goal is to develop a framework that can successfully apply information systems to organizational and environmental issues for smart cities and smart buildings. Accordingly, the book addresses living-lab experiment evaluation techniques, and provides critical analyses of the role of the environment, context and users’ behavioral responses. In addition, it discusses key questions on the efficient management of resources, need for appropriate IT solutions, and employing co-creation with users to improve planning and organization.

Book excerpt: The book describes the different tools and techniques available to anyone who is engaged in providing funding or advice to a project. Project finance is ultimately about applying three basic principles to a funding situation and from these three, all the other ideas flow including contracts. First, there needs to be a cash flow coming from the project that is capable of being captured by finance providers. Second, there needs to be a group of assets that can be segregated and contained by making sure they cannot be taken away by other parties and thirdly there needs to be a risk envelope that is well understood and managed dynamically during the project's life. To do this, a network of contracts must exist to support the rights of the different stakeholders and their legal claims on the project. In this book the authors examine all of these aspects and provide some examples/mini-cases of project structures and approaches. The book begins and ends with a longer case study of two projects that were standalone examples of project financing and controversial for different reasons at the time of their fundraising.Bundle Set: Project Financing (Analyzing and Structuring Projects & Financial Instruments and Risk Management)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central banks came out of the Great Recession with increased power and responsibilities. Indeed, central banks are often now seen as 'the only game in town', and a place to put innumerable problems vastly exceeding their traditional remit. These new powers do not fit well, however, with the independence of central banks, remote from the democratic control of government. Central Banking in Turbulent Times examines fundamental questions about the central banking system, asking whether the model of an independent central bank devoted to price stability is the final resting point of a complex development that started centuries ago. It dissects the hypothesis that the Great Recession has prompted a reassessment of that model; a renewed emphasis on financial stability has emerged, possibly vying for first rank in the hierarchy of objectives of central banks. This raises the risk of dilemmas, since the Great Recession brought into question implicit assumptions that the pursuit of price stability would also lead to financial stability. In addition, the border between monetary and fiscal policy was blurred both in the US and in Europe. Central Banking in Turbulent Times asks whether the model prevailing before the Great Recession has been irrevocably altered. Are we entering, as Charles Goodhart has hypothesized, into the 'fourth epoch' of central banking? Are changes to central banks part of a move away from the global liberal order that seemed to have prevailed at the turn of the century? Central Banking in Turbulent Times seeks to answer these questions as it examines how changes can allow for the maintenance of price stability, while adapting to the long-term consequences of the Great Recession.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urbanization got an impetus during 1980s and 1990s due to advances in transportation and telecommunicationand further momentum was provided by globalization. During this period many Asian Countries experienced both economic boom and population increase. UN HABITAT (2006) pointed out that Asia and Africa will host largest urban population in 21st century and cities will continue to be sites of extreme inequality. It is feared that Asian cities may not be able to cope with the ongoing urbanization and urbanization of poverty further adds to the challenges. This edited volume addresses to the challenges thrown by urban poverty for sustainable cities in developing countries and also presents some strategies adopted in these countries to deal with these challenges. The volume contains seventeen articles which are divided into three sections. Section-1, entitled 'Urban Poverty in Developing Countries: Some Issues', contains five articles dealing with urban poverty and delineates certain issues related to it. Section-II, entitled 'Urban Poverty in India: Empirical Reality', contains five articles which present the empirical situation of urban poverty in India. Section-III, entitled 'Urban poverty and Strategies for Sustainable Cities', anthologizes seven articles dealing with some strategies to grapple with the problem of urban poverty in developing countries and the outcome of these efforts. All these efforts to achieve sustainable cities are not producing desired results. Cities cannot be sustainable if rural areas, neighborhoods and communities are not sustainable. So focus must shift to these settlements as well.
