Book excerpt: Excerpt from Service Under the Covenant Despite the illimitation that we give to the range of thought, there is one direction at least where it is power less to penetrate the wall of the unknown and, at least in this life, the unknowable, and learn from whence originated all things. System after system of universes were revealed to the naked eyes of the ancients, and telescopes have multiplied their number, and increasingly powerful instruments add to them so many more distant constellations that man despairs of ever learning even their number or whether there is any limitation to the grand system, or what are the boundaries of space. Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. As the rule is expressed in Article 183 of the Regulations: The total amount to be extinguished by amortization, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value (either for sale or for use as part of the plant or equipment of a going business) under stable post war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Inheritance: An Account of the Eucharistic Service in the First Three Centuries In the following pages I have attempted a history of the Holy Eucharist in the first ages of the Church in a form as popular as such a subject admits of treatment, where reference has constantly to be made to early Greek and Latin writers, as well as to the Jewish authorities, for those services of the ancient Church of the Old Covenant out of which the Christian Liturgy sprang. To crush this extensive subject into a nutshell - I have undertaken to establish the following propositions: - 1. We have a number of early Liturgies belonging to all the branches of the Church, as well as to those heretical bodies which separated from the Church in the fifth century. By comparing these Liturgies together, we find that all are as much alike in type and feature as are the races of mankind, each slightly varied, just as each race of man has its speciality in feature and colour; but that, in spite of such varieties, all are organically one. 2. This fact leads us to conclude that, just as the human race sprang from one mother, so do these many liturgies derive from one parent Liturgy. 3. Further: - the cause of the differences is due to the fact that this one Mother Liturgy was not committed to writing; it was not fixed as to its verbal expression; the main structure, nevertheless, was determined from the first. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy in the world is backsliding in many countries around the globe at the present time due to various reasons. Different nations may have their own particular reasons such as socioeconomic inequality, poverty, failure of checks and balances that may result in an abrupt military coup d'etat to change from democracy to tyranny. In nations where democracy failed, there were no tanks on the street. Constitution of the land remained, but elected leaders became autocrats, maintaining a veneer of democracy. America, being a nation with nearly 80 percent of Christians, has been the strongest democracy in the world who championed it as the model for the rest of the world. However, democracy in America appears to be in peril because of political bickering, partisan gridlock, and promulgation of falsities, misinformation, and faux faith by one political party. By introducing the foundational principles of democracy from the philosophical arguments of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, the author shows how and why the cornerstone of democracy in America shows signs of crumbling. The book vividly explains: Politics without God will shatter the foundation of democracy. Present political system rejects the checks and balances laid by the founding fathers. The right wing has cultivated a spirit of untruth that spreads like a wildfire. Rejecting truth by political parties and leadership is a sign of strong delusion. There is a clear moral bankruptcy in the present political sphere of our nation. The brightness of democracy in America which Tocqueville praised has been tarnished. Hypocritic and dishonest leaders should not reign, lest the people be ensnared. American politicians must register their solemn oath in heaven to act in truth. No nation can be established in one day but can shatter in one day by a despot. America must realign with God to lead the nation in truth, justice, and freedom for all. Democracy turns to tyranny when a moral man becomes amoral. With biblical prophecies and instructions, the author shows that America faces a real threat to its democracy unless it resists tyrants with all their mind, soul, and strength, which is obedience to God who can anchor the nation on its solid foundation set by the Founding Fathers. Every citizen, political and judicial leaders of the nation, are the cupbearers and the watchmen of the nation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Second Church in Boston: Commemorative Services Held on the Completion of Two Hundred and Fifty Years Since Its Foundation, 1649-1899 In order most fitly to commemorate the series of events which have marked the organization, the continuance, and the present life of The Second Church in Boston, the Committee appointed by the Standing Committee have made a permanent record of the services held on the 19th. and 20th. of November, 1899. The place which this Church has occupied in the history of Congregationalism, in education, in literature, and in public affairs, the distinguished ministers who have occupied its pulpit, the vicissitudes through which it has passed, make its story most interesting. Upon the unanimous adoption of their plans by the Proprietors and members of the Society the Committee of Arrangements proceeded to carry them out in a manner which merited and received the cordial approval of all. The announcement of the programme at once called the attention not only of the immediate members of the Church, but of the many friends, former parishioners, and descendants of the old families, and, still more, of a numerous company who are ever interested in the ecclesiastical and local history of the city. The exercises were held in the meeting-house, and were attentively listened to, at every session, by crowds which taxed the auditorium to its utmost limit. For assistance in bringing the occasion to a successful issue the Committee of Arrangements were indebted to many persons who, by their public services, their advice, and in other ways, took important parts. More than all, perhaps, did they recognize the continued and devoted loyalty of every member of the Parish, both man and woman, for the heartiest co-operation in every way.
