Book excerpt: While the PP and PPK were intended for police work, the Walther P 38 was produced for the Germany military; all three pistols have garnered a formidable international reputation since the 1930s. The innovative Walther PP (Polizeipistole), a double-action semi-automatic pistol intended for the law-enforcement market, became available in 1929 and went on to arm the police of several European countries in the 1930s. Its smaller cousin the PPK, more readily concealed for undercover work but with reduced magazine capacity, was produced from 1931. Intended to replace the P 08 Luger, the Walther P 38 was issued from 1940 and equipped the armed forces of Germany and other countries during and after World War II, but never entirely replaced the Luger in German service. All three pistols went on to have lengthy and varied service across the world after 1945. Both the PP and the PPK remain in production today, while the P 38 re-emerged as the P1 and equipped West German forces from 1963 until 2004, when it was replaced by the P8. In this study, noted authority John Walter assesses the origins, development, use and legacy of these three high-profile semi-automatic pistols, alongside other Walther variants, such as the tiny .25 ACP Modell 9.

Book excerpt: Modern Combat Pistols provides a comprehensive account of the development of military and police semi-automatic pistols and their ammunition from 1945 to present day. It follows on from the same authors critically acclaimed Assault Rifle [Crowood 2004]. The first part of the book looks at defensive and offensive pistols, the difference between military and police pistols, and special-purpose weapons such as silenced and underwater pistols. The history of the handgun before 1945 is described, and there is an examination both of the development of the semi-automatic pistol since 1945 and of future trends in pistol design. The second part of the book is divided up on a country-by-country basis. Each countrys section starts with a historical overview of pistol development in that country before giving a description and technical data for each individual weapon. Appendices cover technical aspects of semi-automatic and ammunition design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making its debut in 1935, the Browning High-Power was the world's most widely used military pistol for much of the 20th century. Military and law-enforcement agencies in more than 90 countries have issued the High-Power and it has seen combat in conflicts from World War II through to the 'War on Terror'. After conquering Belgium, Nazi Germany produced more than 300,000 High-Powers for use by the Waffen-SS, Fallschirmjäger and others, and after 1945 the High-Power became standard for most NATO-armed forces as well as scores of others. Chambered for the 9×19mm Luger cartridge, John Browning's High-Power improved on the classic Colt M1911 design, especially in its use of a far simpler takedown system. The pistol's innovative 13-round magazine, designed by Dieudonné Saive, staggered the cartridges for higher capacity without unduly increasing the grip size. During its 82-year production run at Fabrique Nationale (FN) in Belgium, the design evolved slightly, but a 2017 High-Power was still easily recognizable as a descendant of the original model. Packed with gripping material including detailed technical specifications, contemporary photographs and highly accurate artist's renditions, this title is a comprehensive and informative guide to the world's most iconic semi-automatic pistol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collection of research results providing police officials and officers with comparative technical information on various types and models of handguns and ammunition. Prior to standardization which occurred within police departments in the 1930's, officers were usually expected to furnish their equipment, including weapons and ammunition. Two factors, a high-degree of accuracy in the .38 S & W special revolver cartridge and the convenience of police exchanging a standard ammunition, led to the adoption of the S & W .38 by most large departments. However, researchers since 1900 have presented evidence that this accepted police handgun cartridge should be reevaluated in terms of effectiveness. Professor Bristow offers a review of some of that research in this collection of agency evaluations, factory ballistic test reports, excerpted government documents, and other materials which present alternatives to the .38 special as the standard police handgun. Wound ballistics, considerations of velocity and shock, and technical concerns over accuracy versus recoil are detailed in both descriptive and statistical terms. The pros and cons of high-velocity expanding bullets are presented, as are the implications of using large caliber revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. These subjects are also discussed in the context of such larger problems as the cost-risk of change and community relations versus officer protection. The material is intended to aid law enforcement officials and officers who have the responsibility of choosing and justifying a handgun for their agency or themselves.

Weapons not often seen on the battlefield can prove useful, even indispensible, in an urban setting. This expert reference guide examines in detail the most successful small arms in use and how changes in warfare have affected how those weapons are used and have transformed the small arms industry. Professional soldiers, law enforcement officers and students and researchers of small arms will gain a working knowledge of the most common and successful urban combat weapons (including some currently in development).
