Must the service animal leave the classroom if the teacher is allergic? Do I need to include the service animal in the IEP? These are some of the many questions that arise when a child with disability brings a service animal to school. Service Animals in Schools: Legal, Educational, Administrative and Strategic Handling Aspects (LEASH), provides a comprehensive overview of the legal, educational, and accessibility issues surrounding service animals in schools and provides practical guidelines for addressing these concerns within an academic setting. The authors explore topics such as types of assistance animals, educational planning and IEP development, classroom integration, transition planning, and more, providing practical information about service animal use from both ends of the leash.

With the expansion of new service dog types, a greater complexity with regard to service animal laws and regulations and the interpretation of these by the courts has developed. This book carefully examines these complexities at both the state and federal levels. In addition, the expanded use of therapy dogs in facilities and institutions has brought with it a paradigm shift in society's acceptance and acknowledgment of the canine capacity to contribute in meaningful ways to.the lives of ill and institutionalized persons.--From publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reform in education has focused mainly on development of new programs and procedures to increase the achievement of the student in the classroom. Teacher evaluations are now based on how students perform in their classrooms on yearly standardized tests. The advent of integrating students with special needs into the regular classroom has brought both benefits and concerns for average and above average students. Special education in the United States has evolved from institutional and segregated environments to inclusion in the regular education classrooms. We examine how the practice has affected all students and question whether this change has created equal opportunity for those students without special education needs. This book researches and reports on issues of current practice: e.g., teacher preparation, placement of students with special needs, implications for the average and above in the classroom and the financial costs driving placement decisions in the education system. We examine the lowering of standards so all can pass tests, report on loss of engagement of students by middle school, and mourn the squandering of creativity to appease a mandate. Sir Ken Robinson relates that, “Education is meant to take us into a future we cannot even grasp.” Yet we continue on a road that lowers our educational ranking internationally. We recommend to provide services for all students, and take the system from its current state to one that provides a “Free and appropriate education for all!”

Book excerpt: Years ago, a colleague came up with the novel idea of bringing my dog to school to work with students with emotional issues. Since then this one dog has touched many people and has prompted other programs to add a therapy dog to their staff. My book explores my personal experiences working with a therapy dog in three different school settings over a 7-year period. The therapy dog program involves using dog and handler teams that have been certified through Therapy Dogs International (TDI). Animal assisted therapy is a nontraditional method for working with regular and special education students in a variety of programs. This research project involved the work of many individuals. I have been blessed to work with many outstanding people throughout my career who have been willing to think outside of the box and support such a nontraditional idea. This book is a must read for educators, therapists, and animal lovers and sends a message about the climate of our schools and connecting with our youth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the position of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) that registered school nurses (hereinafter referred to as school nurses) are integral to the team planning process necessary to successfully integrate "service animals" into schools. A request to bring a service animal into the school setting presents questions due to the complex disability discrimination laws, emerging medical and psychological data concerning service animal benefits (Winkle, Crowe & Hendrix, 2012), various interpretations of what criteria to use to distinguish between a trained service animal and a household pet, and potential effects on other students and staff. School nurses assess, plan, and coordinate care to develop an Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHP) for students with special healthcare needs, including students who may require the use of a service animal during the school day. Just as a student may need a wheelchair or other adaptive device, service animals are essential to some students' ability to be at school. School nurses are leaders in the development and evaluation of school health policies and programs that address the health and safety needs of students in the school environment (ANA & NASN, 2011). [This document replaces the Issue Brief "Service Animals in Schools" (Adopted January 2012).].

Book excerpt: This Article focuses on the issue of whether a child with a disability has the legal right to attend a primary or secondary school with a service animal. It begins by setting forth basic information regarding the children who are currently receiving special education services and discussing the increasing number of animals placed into service with individuals under the age of eighteen, focusing on the recent trend of utilizing service animals to assist children with an autism spectrum disorder. Studies relating to the common argument against allowing service animals in schools - the impact of service animals on others with allergies to animal dander - are then examined. The Article continues with a brief summary of the federal law to provide a platform for analysis of the major cases in this area. As state laws that expand the rights of students appear to be an effective tool in litigation in this area, several of these laws are evaluated along with descriptions of language likely to be found in school district policies. State laws providing for trainers of service animals to have access to public accommodations, including schools, are then analyzed. The Article concludes by arguing that school districts need to be prepared with policies that provide for compliance with the law while still considering the impact of such animals on the school environment generally, given the legislative trends in this area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of children and adults across the nation spend their days in school buildings, and they need safe, healthy environments to thrive, learn, and succeed. This book explores the school environment using the methods and perspectives of environmental health science. Though environmental healht has long been understood to be an important factor in workplaces, homes, and communities, this is the first book to address the same basic concerns in schools. The editors are physicians and educators trained in pediatrics, occupational and environmental medicine, and medical toxicology, and the authors are experts in their fields drawn from across the United States and abroad. Each section of the book addresses a different concern facing schools today. In the first six sections, the various aspects of the school environment are examined. Chapters include the physical environment of the school, air quality issues, pest control, cleaning methods, food safety, safe designs of playgrounds and sports fields, crime and violence prevention, and transportation. In the last two sections, recommendations are made for school administrators on how to maximize the health of their schools. Appropriately evaluating the school environment, implementing strategies to address children and adults with disabilities, emphasizing health services, infectious disease prevention and recognition, and occupational health for faculty and staff are all addressed. The entire book is evidence-based, readable, generously illustrated, and practical. An indispensable resource for parents, school staff, administrators, government officials, and health professionals, this book is for anyone who cares about the health of our schools.
