Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Homiletics and Preaching, and on Public Prayer: Together With Sermons and Letters This state of the case left me no option as to the course to be pursued. It was plainly necessary for me to adapt my instructions to the immediate necessities of my pupils, and to give them aid on those principles which they were at once to apply in practice. Hence my precepts took a systematic form, as designed to exhibit a connected view of the points which come in requisition with a theological student, just beginning to compose sermons. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lectures, Sermons, Addresses and Letters of Rev. D. W. Cahill: With a Biographical Sketch In giving to the public, in book form, a biography of the Rev. D. W. Cahill, with nearly all the rich literary legacy he has left in the form of lecture, sermon, letter, and public address, we hope that we shall earn the gratitude of all who love what is transcendently valuable, grand, and racy in the English language. Here especially do we look for the reward of our labor, in point of esteem and patronage from his countrymen, by whom he was so deeply and deservedly beloved, and whose affection he returned with all the fervor of his ardent temperament and kindly nature. In his great devotion to that faith to which he was a model in practice as well as in exposition, every good priest will find a stimulant to his piety and zeal. In his ardent patriotism, so often displayed in action, as well as in his own burning, eloquent words, every Irishman and lover of literature will find something to be proud of, to admire, and to imitate; and in the charity and blameless record of his life every Christian can read a profitable lesson. As he was a giant in intellect and a hero in the moral beauty of his life, it would require a pen of surpassing power to draw his literary portrait. But as it is none of the purpose of a preface to assume the work of the essayist or reviewer, we will confine ourself to indicating a few of our reasons for undertaking this literary task, and a few of the most salient points of its purpose and utility. As a preacher and a lecturer, Dr. Cahill has ever been classed among the most eloquent and profound of his age, whilst in the abstract mathematics, he had few if any rivals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters and Sketches of Sermons, in Threee Volumes, Vol. 2 of 3 I have been interested in an account given by a friend, who had placed his son with an uncle who was not very friendly to what they denominate my principles. The good gentleman was in the habit of taking his family to church on the Sabbath; and on Sunday morning, the child, about twelve years of age, was ordered to get ready to attend with the rest. He sighed deeply, and discovered manifest reluctance Come, my boy, said the uncle, why do you not get ready Why, Sir, I would rather not go. Why so, pray I believe what they call Mr. Murray's doctrine, Sir. You do 1 Pray what have you to do with Mr. Murray's doctrine Why, Sir, I think it is God's word, I read it all in the Bible. Well, suppose it is, why should that discourage you from going to meeting Why, Sir, it makes me feel bad, when I hear the minister telling the people the word of God is a lie Why, you young rogue, you never heard any minister say so. But, Sir, they say our Saviour is not the Saviour of all men, and God says he is, and that is saying the word of God is a lie. Well, my boy, if you stay with me, you most go to meeting. If you insist upon it, Sir, I must but I am sure, Sir, you would not like to go your self if you loved God. Why so, pray Because, Sir, if you loved God you would not like to hear so much had said of him. The observations of this child were impressed upon the mind of the uncle, he could not erase them, and happening to be in this town on business, he has attended the ministry of reconciliation, and has been so fully convinced of the truth, that he attended me home to my lodgings, communicated many particulars relative to the exercise of his mind, repeated this story of his nephew, and confessed himself fully established in the truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures and Sermons We must silence every voice, said Fenelon, must silence ourselves also to hear in a profound stillness of the soul those inexpressible things. The voice of the Bible is very much, but without this living, efficacious word within the outward word of the gos pel will seem but'an empty sound. Add to this the witness of St. Augus tine, who told us so many rich things because he knew how to listen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Jesus Lenten Lectures The Lectures here following; were prepared for the author's week-day appointments during Lent. Direct practical impression, and not critical elaboration, was the controlling aim in their composition. As they were preached in different years, some repetitions of thought occur in them which might have been eliminated to the advantage of their literary finish; but as the same things recur in the text, and differ in the form in which they reappear in the Lectures, it has been concluded to leave ail as originally delivered. Lent is by general consent a season arranged by the Church for the calling of its members to a special sobering of their minds for serious meditation upon their situation with regard to spiritual things. It is a time to call to mind the presence and inspection of God, His displeasure with sin, and how we are to secure salvation from it. John Hughes, D.D., Archbishop of New York, Vol. 2: Comprising His Sermons, Letters, Lectures, Speeches, Etc The substance of a Discourse on the Life and Character of the Most Rev. Archbishop Hughes delivered in St. Bridget's Church, New York, February 28th 1864, by the Might Rev. James Roosevelt Bayley, D.D., Bishop of Newark. In speaking of the lamented Archbishop of New York, I do not intend to make a formal eulogy, much less to attempt a full and complete picture of his life and character. To do this as it should be done, would need more eloquent lips than mine and a broader canvass. Still, as I was united to him for many years as his confidential secretary, and, I may be permitted to add, as his intimate friend, I have thought that it would interest you, if in a simple familiar way I were to tell you what I knew of him, and his labors for the Church of God. The memory of such a man should not be permitted to die out amongst us; and all these various appreciations which have been, or will be made, will help to bring out his character and services to religion more fully, and aid us to form a correct, enduring, and instructive remembrance of him. The Most Reverend Archbishop Hughes was, it may be said, without any exaggeration, an extraordinary man. His name will always occupy a high place in the list of eminent men whom Ireland has given with such rich profusion to the service of the Church and of the State in every part of the world. Of him, it may be said, though not in the sense in which the poet wrote the words, that he was "born to greatness." He would have been a distinguished man anywhere, and under any circumstances. No proscription of caste or weight of penal laws could ever have kept him down. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. John Bampton I propose to take for the subject of these lectures one of those antitheses which, as we have seen, are so characteristic of St. Paul, the Letter and the Spirit. I shall endeavour, by a discussion of the passages in his writings in which they occur, to bring out the full mean ing of the terms as he originally conceived of them. This will lead us on to the further question of their adoption into the theological vocabulary of early Chris tian writers, and so to that later and popular use by which they have come to mean the outward and the inward, the form and the substance, the transitory and the permanent, the accidental and the essential, in religion; and then to endeavour to discriminate these two elements in religious thought and life. Before entering on this wider field, it will be necessary to discuss with some fulness the use of the words in St. Paul's writings. Y where I preached my first sermon fifty years ago. There and then I will testify to the loving-kindness of my Matteawan people, and to the sorrow with which I resigned my pastoral work from total failure of health - a work which I have never been able to resume. Other and far better men have followed me in that pleasant field; the generation that knew me has passed away; few know that one of my name was ever a keeper of the flock on that mountain-mpe; but them that God gave me he will keep unto that day when it will be my exceeding joy to present them before our Father's face in the kingdom in heaven.
