Book excerpt: Renowned pastor and New York Times bestselling author Timothy Keller writes the book his readers have been asking for: A year-long daily devotional, beautifully designed with gilt edges and a gold ribbon marker. The Book of Psalms is known as the Bible’s songbook—Jesus knew all 150 psalms intimately, and relied on them to face every situation, including his death. Two decades ago, Tim Keller began reading the entire Book of Psalms every month. The Songs of Jesus is based on his accumulated years of study, insight, and inspiration recorded in his prayer journals. Kathy Keller came to reading the psalms as a support during an extended illness. Together they have distilled the meaning of each verse, inviting readers into the vast wisdom of the psalms. If you have no devotional life yet, this book is a wonderful way to start. If you already spend time in study and prayer, understanding every verse of the psalms will bring you a new level of intimacy with God, unlocking your purpose within God’s kingdom.

Download or read book Wonder Reborn written by Thomas Troeger and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores an issue at the nerve of the long term health of all churches: how godly wonder can be reborn through renewed attention to the place of beauty in preaching and worship. The book opens with an exploration of the theological and cultural difficulties of defining beauty. It traces the church's historical ambivalence about beauty and art and describes how, in our own day, the concept of beauty has been commercialized and degraded. Troeger develops a theologically informed aesthetic that provides a counter-cultural vision of beauty flowing from the love of God. The book demonstrates how preachers can reclaim the place of beauty in preaching and worship. Chapter two employs the concept of midrash to mine the history of congregational song as a resource for sermons. Chapter three introduces methods from musicology for creating sermons on instrumental and choral works and for integrating word and music more effectively. Chapter four explores how the close relationship between poetry and prayer can stir the homiletical imagination. Each of these chapters includes a selection of the author's sermons illustrating how preachers can use these varied art forms to open a congregation to the beauty of God. A final chapter recounts the responses of congregation members to whom the sermons were delivered. It uses the insights gained from those experiences to affirm how the human heart hungers for a vision of wonder and beauty that empowers people to live more faithfully in the world.

Book Synopsis Songs for a Savior by : David M. Oliver
Download or read book Songs for a Savior written by David M. Oliver and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 2003-07 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive resource of five sermons with complete worship services provides a solid, thematically integrated worship and preaching program for Advent and Christmas Eve. It celebrates the deep songs of faith that result from personal encounters with Jesus Christ. The four Advent messages examine biblical personalities, revealing in their experiences real struggles as well as profound joy. You'll explore how Zechariah wrestled to believe what the angel told him concerning the birth of his son; how the prophets searched for God's Word of hope in times of personal and social ferment; how Mary was willing to sacrifice her life for God's purpose; and how the birth of Jesus, heralded by the angels and confirmed by the shepherds, combined fear and joy with divine music. In the final sermon (for Christmas Eve), Oliver links those accounts with our contemporary lives by asking what our personal response will be to the birth of the Savior. Will we allow a song of faith to arise in our lives, in our families, churches, and community? Illustrated with poignant stories and anecdotes, the sermons in Songs For A Savior invite us to hear again the truly good news -- that our song of faith is not so much what we create for God, as how we respond to meeting the Savior and receiving God's gift of salvation through Jesus. Songs For A Savior comes from the heart of one who knows the Savior. Oliver offers these worship resources from his years of helping persons discover the Savior. The liturgies develop a theme for each Sunday, and the sermons weave biblical truths into the complexities of our modern lives, enabling new insights and personal convictions. Congregations experiencing Songs For A Savior will grow in their commitment to love and serve the Savior William R. Harvey Pastor Emeritus, Church of the Savior Canton, Ohio David M. Oliver holds an M.Div. degree from Duke University Divinity School and a D.Min. degree in Spiritual Formation from Asbury Theological Seminary. Currently the pastor of First United Methodist Church in Dover, Ohio, Oliver has served churches in Ohio since 1980, and has participated in the Academy for Preaching. In addition, he is an adjunct professor at Malone College in Canton, Ohio, teaching in the field of spiritual growth and worship. He is the author of Gifts We Bring To Honor The King (CSS).
