Book excerpt: The File is a collection of documents from a major dispute involving a number of American college professors, mainly mathematicians, statisticians, and sociologists. The controversy was ignited by the mathematician Serge Lang's reaction to a questionnaire, "The 1977 Survey of the American Professoriate", distributed by E. C. Ladd of the University of Connecticut and S. M. Lipset of Stanford. The ensuing discussion - in part acrimonious and personal - soon involved a large group of active and passive participants, and included issues such as survey techniques, evaluation of academic work, public and political honesty, and McCarthyism at Harvard.

Book Synopsis Love, Power, and Knowledge by : Hilary Rose
Download or read book Love, Power, and Knowledge written by Hilary Rose and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "... absolutely splendid... the style is elegant, eloquent, and witty. Rose has a unique voice in the increasingly important feminist science and epistemology discussions. A superb accomplishment." --Sandra Harding "This is a lively, contentious, important feminist book. Rose's wit and sharp eye and her commitment to thorough comparative historical analysis make for many pages of wonderful reading." --Donna Haraway Hilary Rose locates feminist criticism of science at the heart of both the women's movement and the radical science movement. Attending to the political economy of the production of knowledge and to what does and does not count as knowledge, she explores how women and minorities are affected by these processes. She examines at length the latest, massively resourced claimant to the old and oppressive "biology is destiny" dictum--the Human Genome program. Rose's commitment to feminist resistance against the science and technology of oppression leads her to claim feminist science fiction--with its imaginative capacity to envision different futures with different sciences and technologies--as an ally of feminist science critics.
Book Synopsis Daring to Educate by : Yolanda L. Watson
Download or read book Daring to Educate written by Yolanda L. Watson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While President Emerita Johnnetta B. Cole is credited with propelling Spelman College (the oldest historically Black womens’ college) to national prominence, little is generally known about the strong academic foundation and legacy she inherited. Contrary to popular belief, the first four presidents of Spelman (including its two co-founders) were White women who led the early development of the College, armed with the belief that former slaves and free Black women should and could receive a college-level education. This book presents the history of Spelman’s foundation through the tenure of its fourth president, Florence M. Read, which ended in 1953. This compelling story is brought up to date by the contributions of Spelman’s current president, Beverly Daniel Tatum, and by Johnnetta B. Cole. The book chronicles how the vision each of these women presidents, and their response to changing social forces, both profoundly shaped Spelman’s curriculum and influenced the lives and minds of thousands of young Black women. The authors trace the evolution of Spelman from its beginning–when the founders, aware of the limited occupations open to its graduates, strove to uplift the Black race by providing an academic education to disenfranchised Black women while also providing training for available careers--to the fifties when the college became an exemplar of liberal arts education in the South. This book fills a void in the history of Black women in higher education. It will appeal to a wide readership interested in women’s studies, Black history and the history of higher education in general.
Book Synopsis Academic Freedom by : Stephen H. Aby
Download or read book Academic Freedom written by Stephen H. Aby and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-02-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The freedom of academics to pursue knowledge and truth in their research, writing, and teaching is a fundamental principle of contemporary higher education in the United States. But this freedom has been hard won and regularly abridged, reinterpreted, and violated. Academic freedom has been central to many issues and controversies in higher education and has thus generated literature in a variety of disciplines. This book provides access to that literature. Included are entries for nearly 500 books, chapters, articles, reports, web sites, and other sources of information about academic freedom. Each entry includes a descriptive annotation, and the entries are grouped in topical chapters. While most of the works cited were published since the 1940 American Association of University Professors Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure, some older studies have also been included. Though the volume focuses primarily on higher education in the U.S., it also includes a chapter on academic freedom in other countries.
