Book excerpt: Basing his work on conversations with the composer, Karl Wörner puts into plain language the ideas behind Stockhausen's new musical forms, examines the development of electronic music and explains the spatial location in new music; the broader aspects of the composer's place in musical history and in the society in which he works are also considered. Particularly valuable is the section on Stockhausen's life, his friends and pupils; and the book includes the composer's own notes on his works. -- from back cover.

This book was released on 1973-01-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from the fact that John Field invented the nocturne, very little has been known about the composer and his strange and colorful life. Although is compositions were once widely popular, they are now neglected and misunderstood and even his beautiful nocturnes are seldom played. The author makes the first important reassessment of the composer's life and music, following Field's career from his childhood as an infant prodigy in Dublin and then as Clementi's pupil in London, through his brilliantly successfully years as the favorite of St. Petersburg and Moscow society, the vicissitudes of his love life, his final appearance in London and Paris, his unhappy years of wandering through Europe, to his eventual return to Moscow where he died in 1837. The nature of Field's greatness as a pianist is extensively discussed and the accounts of his teaching and playing methods are based on the numerous and detailed impressions of the composer's pupils and friends. All Field's known compositions are fully considered, including several works recently discovered by the author. Together with the many illustrations and music examples, this is a brilliant study of a composer whose music is at last put into perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenge, in twentieth-century music, to the normative status of triadic tonality is one of the most far-reaching and extreme revolutions that the history of music has known. In his classic work, Twelve-Tone Tonality, George Perle argues that the seemingly disparate styles of post-triadic music in fact share common structural elements. According to Perle, these elements collectively imply a new tonality as "natural" and coherent as the major-minor tonality that was the basis of a common musical language in the past. His book describes the foundational assumptions of this post-diatonic tonality and illustrates its compositional functions with numerous musical examples. The second edition of Twelve-Tone Tonality is enlarged by eleven new chapters. Some of these are "postscripts" to earlier chapters, clarifying, elucidating, and expanding upon concepts discussed in the original edition. Others discuss new developments in the theory and practice of twelve-tone tonality, including voice-leading implications of the system and dissonance treatment. Errors discovered in the original edition have been corrected. - Jacket flap.

Book excerpt: Ideas and Styles in the Western Musical Tradition, Third Edition, explores the conceptual frameworks that have shaped musical development from antiquity to the present. In a lively narrative that prompts readers to think both critically and creatively, Douglass Seaton uses historical documents from thinkers, artists, and musicians to add rich detail to the compelling story of Western music. This brief and accessible narrative of music history features numerous works of art, literature, and music that immerse the reader in the historical and intellectual contexts of musical styles. In addition, the thoroughly updated and revised third edition: * Includes the most current historiography * Clarifies the interconnections and divisions between musical periods, moving away from -periodization- terms * Offers an updated and comprehensive timeline * Expands the final chapter with additional recent works and more reflection on postmodernism * Features a unique anthology-free design that allows instructors the flexibility to choose their own musical examples (a correlation guide to the major score anthologies is included in the Companion Website) The third edition is also enhanced by a new Companion Website (www.oup.com/us/seaton) with study aids, teaching tips, chapter synopses, review and quiz materials, and listening recommendations. Also included are questions for study and reflection, guidance for research and writing in music history, and hints for pronouncing church Latin, as well as a correlation guide to the major score anthologies.
