His final mission starts well—but then goes terribly wrong. He finally feels he has some grip on American idiom, but being shot was “no picnic.” The biggest shock? Nothing in his training prepared him for the nameless but lovely French dragoon who falls into his lap—literally. Their missions flying with the Americans are over, but that only begins the tale of Sergeant George and the Dragoon.

Book excerpt: The Bergen Record reported that the remains of a Revolutionary War cavalry unit were unearthed in River Vale, NJ. This was the Third Continental Light Dragoons, nicknamed, Mrs. Washingtons Body Guard. The accompanying text read provided bayonet practice for the British in Old Tappan, NY. This has come down to us as the Baylor Massacre of September 28, 1778. Who were the officers and men of the Third Dragoons? Did they play more of a part in the American Revolution than provide bayonet practice? How did, and how could, a massacre take place? A military unit must have a history. Was the massacre the end of the dragoons? What was a Virginia unit doing in Bergen County, New Jersey in the first place? How could a cavalry unit be so surprised and then massacred with almost no shots fired in return? This is not a conventional history, in that there is little attempt to re-write history. History writes itself from letters, diaries, public records and newsprint.

Download or read book Mississippi Territory in the War of 1812 written by Eron Rowland and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1968 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the major historical and genealogical source for information on the part played by the Mississippi Territory in the campaign against the British and the Creeks during the War of 1812. Mrs. Rowland's detailed historical narrative discusses all the major conflicts in the Mississippi theater, commencing with the Battle of Burnt Corn in July 1813 and the massacre at Fort Mims--which resulted in Andrew Jackson's assumption of command--through the Battle of Horseshoe Bend to the legendary Battle of New Orleans. Of greater genealogical interest, however, the book boasts of "Rolls of Mississippi Commands in the War of 1812," a 76-page section giving the names and ranks of upwards of 7,500 soldiers and officers. The roster is arranged by regiment and battalion and detachment and company, and thereunder alphabetically. Excerpted with permission from Volume IV of "Publications of the Mississippi Historical Society," Mrs. Rowland's book is an authoritative reference compiled from primary sources and transcriptions, photostats of which appear throughout the volume.

Book excerpt: Highborn Anna Arrington has been "following the drum," obeying the wishes of her cold, controlling cavalry officer husband. When he dies, all she wants is to leave life with Wellington's army in Spain behind her and go home to her family's castle in Scotland. Sergeant Will Atkins ran away from home to join the army in a fit of boyish enthusiasm. He is a natural born soldier, popular with officers and men alike, uncommonly brave and chivalrous, and educated and well-read despite his common birth. As Anna journeys home with a convoy of wounded soldiers, she forms an unlikely friendship with Will. When the convoy is ambushed and their fellow soldiers captured, they become fugitives—together. The attraction between them is strong—but even if they can escape the threat of death at the hands of the French, is love strong enough to bridge the gap between a viscount's daughter and an innkeeper's son? 94,000 words

Book Synopsis Kearny's Dragoons Out West by : Will Gorenfeld
Download or read book Kearny's Dragoons Out West written by Will Gorenfeld and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having banished eastern Native peoples to lands west of the Mississippi, President Andrew Jackson’s government by 1833 needed a new type of soldier to keep displaced Indians from returning home. And so the 1st Dragoons came into being. Will and John Gorenfeld tell their story—an epic of exploration, conquest, and diplomacy from the outposts of western history—in this book-length treatment of the force that became the U.S. Cavalry. The 1st Dragoons represented a new regiment of horsemen that drew on the combined skills and clashing visions of two types of leaders: old Indian killers and backwoodsmen such as loudmouth miner Henry Dodge; and straight-arrow battlefield veterans such as Stephen Watts Kearny, who had fought Redcoats in 1812 but now negotiated treaties with Indian tribes and enforced the new order of the West. Drawing on soldiers’ journals and other never-before-used sources, Kearny’s Dragoons Out West reconstructs this forgotten, often surprising moment in U.S. history. Under Kearny, the 1st Dragoons performed its mission through diplomacy and intimidation rather than violence, even protecting Indians from white settlers. Following the regiment up to the U.S.-Mexican War, when diplomacy gave way to open violence, this book introduces readers to future Civil War generals. Colorful characters appearing in these pages include Private Thomas Russell, a young attorney tricked by a horse thief into joining the army; James Hildreth, who authored two books on the 1st Dragoons; and English drill sergeant Long Ned Stanley, whose tenure in the 1st reveals much about American immigrants’ experience in 1833–48. The promises made in Kearny’s well-intentioned treaty making were ultimately broken. This detailed and in-depth look back at his legacy offers a glimpse of a lost world—and an intriguing turning point in the history of western expansion.
