Chapter II addresses the Brauer group of a commutative ring, and automorphisms of separable algebras. Chapter III surveys the principal theorems of the Galois theory for commutative rings. In Chapter IV the authors present a direct derivation of the first six terms of the seven-term exact sequence for Galois cohomology. In the fifth and final chapter the authors illustrate the preceding material with applications to the structure of central simple algebras and the Brauer group of a Dedekind domain, and they pose problems for further investigation. Book excerpt: Within the context of the Wedderburn-Malcev theorem a radical complement exists and all complements are conjugated. The main topics of this work are to analyze the Determination of a (all) radical complements, the representation of an element as the sum of a nilpotent and fully separable element and the compatibility of the Wedderburn-Malcev theorem with derived structures. Answers are presented in details for commutative and solvable associative algebras. Within the analysis the set of fully-separable elements and the generalized Jordan decomposition are of special interest. We provide examples based on generalized quaternion algebras, group algebras and algebras of traingular matrices over a field. The results (and also the theorem of Wedderburn-Malcev and Taft) are transferred to non-unitary algebras by using the star-composition and the adjunction of an unit. Within the App endix we present proofs for the Wedderburn-Malcev theorem for unitary algebras, for Taft's theorem on G-invariant radical complements for unitary algebras and for a theorem of Bauer concerning solvable unit groups of associative algebras.

My first goal thus has been to take three different viewpoints and demonstrate how they offer complementary intuitive insight into the subject. In Part I we begin with a functorial idea, discussing some familiar processes for constructing groups. These turn out to be equivalent to the ring-theoretic objects called Hopf algebras, with which we can then con struct new examples. Study of their representations shows that they are closely related to groups of matrices, and closed sets in matrix space give us a geometric picture of some of the objects involved. This interplay of methods continues as we turn to specific results. In Part II, a geometric idea (connectedness) and one from classical matrix theory (Jordan decomposition) blend with the study of separable algebras. In Part III, a notion of differential prompted by the theory of Lie groups is used to prove the absence of nilpotents in certain Hopf algebras. The ring-theoretic work on faithful flatness in Part IV turns out to give the true explanation for the behavior of quotient group functors. Finally, the material is connected with other parts of algebra in Part V, which shows how twisted forms of any algebraic structure are governed by its automorphism group scheme.

Its origin is linked to the work of Hamilton who discovered the famous algebra of quaternions, and Cayley who developed matrix theory. Later finite dimensional algebras were studied by a large number of mathematicians including B. Peirce, C.S. Peirce, Clifford, ·Weierstrass, Dedekind, Jordan and Frobenius. At the end of the last century T. Molien and E. Cartan described the semisimple algebras over the complex and real fields and paved the first steps towards the study of non-semi simple algebras.

Chapter IV contains the theory of the commutator subalgebra of a simple subalgebra of a normal simple algebra, the study of automorphisms of a simple algebra, splitting fields, and the index reduction factor theory. The fifth chapter contains the foundation of the theory of crossed products and of their special case, cyclic algebras. The theory of exponents is derived there as well as the consequent factorization of normal division algebras into direct factors of prime-power degree. Chapter VI consists of the study of the abelian group of cyclic systems which is applied in Chapter VII to yield the theory of the structure of direct products of cyclic algebras and the consequent properties of norms in cyclic fields. This chapter is closed with the theory of $p$-algebras. In Chapter VIII an exposition is given of the theory of the representations of algebras. The treatment is somewhat novel in that while the recent expositions have used representation theorems to obtain a number of results on algebras, here the theorems on algebras are themselves used in the derivation of results on representations. The presentation has its inspiration in the author's work on the theory of Riemann matrices and is concluded by the introduction to the generalization (by H. Weyl and the author) of that theory. The theory of involutorial simple algebras is derived in Chapter X both for algebras over general fields and over the rational field. The results are also applied in the determination of the structure of the multiplication algebras of all generalized Riemann matrices, a result which is seen in Chapter XI to imply a complete solution of the principal problem on Riemann matrices.
