Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive introduction to the theory of separable algebras over commutative rings. After a thorough introduction to the general theory, the fundamental roles played by separable algebras are explored. For example, Azumaya algebras, the henselization of local rings, and Galois theory are rigorously introduced and treated. Interwoven throughout these applications is the important notion of étale algebras. Essential connections are drawn between the theory of separable algebras and Morita theory, the theory of faithfully flat descent, cohomology, derivations, differentials, reflexive lattices, maximal orders, and class groups. The text is accessible to graduate students who have finished a first course in algebra, and it includes necessary foundational material, useful exercises, and many nontrivial examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These lecture notes were prepared by the authors for use in graduate courses and seminars, based on the work of many earlier mathematicians. In addition to very elementary results, presented for the convenience of the reader, Chapter I contains the Morita theorems and the definition of the projective class group of a commutative ring. Chapter II addresses the Brauer group of a commutative ring, and automorphisms of separable algebras. Chapter III surveys the principal theorems of the Galois theory for commutative rings. In Chapter IV the authors present a direct derivation of the first six terms of the seven-term exact sequence for Galois cohomology. In the fifth and final chapter the authors illustrate the preceding material with applications to the structure of central simple algebras and the Brauer group of a Dedekind domain, and they pose problems for further investigation. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter.

Book excerpt: Within the context of the Wedderburn-Malcev theorem a radical complement exists and all complements are conjugated. The main topics of this work are to analyze the Determination of a (all) radical complements, the representation of an element as the sum of a nilpotent and fully separable element and the compatibility of the Wedderburn-Malcev theorem with derived structures. Answers are presented in details for commutative and solvable associative algebras. Within the analysis the set of fully-separable elements and the generalized Jordan decomposition are of special interest. We provide examples based on generalized quaternion algebras, group algebras and algebras of traingular matrices over a field. The results (and also the theorem of Wedderburn-Malcev and Taft) are transferred to non-unitary algebras by using the star-composition and the adjunction of an unit. Within the App endix we present proofs for the Wedderburn-Malcev theorem for unitary algebras, for Taft's theorem on G-invariant radical complements for unitary algebras and for a theorem of Bauer concerning solvable unit groups of associative algebras.

Could you and I with Him consl?ire To grasp this sorry Scheme of things entIre' KHAYYAM People investigating algebraic groups have studied the same objects in many different guises. My first goal thus has been to take three different viewpoints and demonstrate how they offer complementary intuitive insight into the subject. In Part I we begin with a functorial idea, discussing some familiar processes for constructing groups. These turn out to be equivalent to the ring-theoretic objects called Hopf algebras, with which we can then con struct new examples. Study of their representations shows that they are closely related to groups of matrices, and closed sets in matrix space give us a geometric picture of some of the objects involved. This interplay of methods continues as we turn to specific results. In Part II, a geometric idea (connectedness) and one from classical matrix theory (Jordan decomposition) blend with the study of separable algebras. In Part III, a notion of differential prompted by the theory of Lie groups is used to prove the absence of nilpotents in certain Hopf algebras. The ring-theoretic work on faithful flatness in Part IV turns out to give the true explanation for the behavior of quotient group functors. Finally, the material is connected with other parts of algebra in Part V, which shows how twisted forms of any algebraic structure are governed by its automorphism group scheme.

Book excerpt: Module theory over commutative asociative rings is usually extended to noncommutative associative rings by introducing the category of left (or right) modules. An alternative to this procedure is suggested by considering bimodules. A refined module theory for associative rings is used to investigate the bimodule structure of arbitary algebras and group actions on these algebras.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many people there is life after 40; for some mathematicians there is algebra after Galois theory. The objective ofthis book is to prove the latter thesis. It is written primarily for students who have assimilated substantial portions of a standard first year graduate algebra textbook, and who have enjoyed the experience. The material that is presented here should not be fatal if it is swallowed by persons who are not members of that group. The objects of our attention in this book are associative algebras, mostly the ones that are finite dimensional over a field. This subject is ideal for a textbook that will lead graduate students into a specialized field of research. The major theorems on associative algebras inc1ude some of the most splendid results of the great heros of algebra: Wedderbum, Artin, Noether, Hasse, Brauer, Albert, Jacobson, and many others. The process of refine ment and c1arification has brought the proof of the gems in this subject to a level that can be appreciated by students with only modest background. The subject is almost unique in the wide range of contacts that it makes with other parts of mathematics. The study of associative algebras con tributes to and draws from such topics as group theory, commutative ring theory, field theory, algebraic number theory, algebraic geometry, homo logical algebra, and category theory. It even has some ties with parts of applied mathematics.

Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the Brauer group of a commutative ring and related invariants. Part I presents a new self-contained exposition of the Brauer group of a commutative ring. Included is a systematic development of the theory of Grothendieck topologies and étale cohomology, and discussion of topics such as Gabber's theorem and the theory of Taylor's big Brauer group of algebras without a unit. Part II presents a systematic development of the Galois theory of Hopf algebras with special emphasis on the group of Galois objects of a cocommutative Hopf algebra. The development of the theory is carried out in such a way that the connection to the theory of the Brauer group in Part I is made clear. Recent developments are considered and examples are included. The Brauer-Long group of a Hopf algebra over a commutative ring is discussed in Part III. This provides a link between the first two parts of the volume and is the first time this topic has been discussed in a monograph. Audience: Researchers whose work involves group theory. The first two parts, in particular, can be recommended for supplementary, graduate course use.

Book excerpt: This volume is divided into three parts. Part I provides the foundations of the theory of modular representations. Special attention is drawn to the Brauer-Swan theory and the theory of Brauer characters. A detailed investigation of quadratic, symplectic and symmetric modules is also provided. Part II is devoted entirely to the Green theory: vertices and sources, the Green correspondence, the Green ring, etc. In Part III, permutation modules are investigated with an emphasis on the study of p-permutation modules and Burnside rings. The material is developed with sufficient attention to detail so that it can easily be read by the novice, although its chief appeal will be to specialists. A number of the results presented in this volume have almost certainly never been published before.

Homological methods appear to be effective in many problems in the theory of algebras; we hope their inclusion makes this book more complete and self-contained as a textbook. We have also taken this occasion to correct several inaccuracies and errors in the original Russian edition. We should like to express our gratitude to V. Dlab who has not only metic ulously translated the text, but has also contributed by writing an Appendix devoted to a new important class of algebras, viz. quasi-hereditary algebras. Finally, we are indebted to the publishers, Springer-Verlag, for enabling this book to reach such a wide audience in the world of mathematical community. Kiev, February 1993 Yu.A. Drozd V.V. Kirichenko Preface The theory of finite dimensional algebras is one of the oldest branches of modern algebra. Its origin is linked to the work of Hamilton who discovered the famous algebra of quaternions, and Cayley who developed matrix theory. Later finite dimensional algebras were studied by a large number of mathematicians including B. Peirce, C.S. Peirce, Clifford, ·Weierstrass, Dedekind, Jordan and Frobenius. At the end of the last century T. Molien and E. Cartan described the semisimple algebras over the complex and real fields and paved the first steps towards the study of non-semi simple algebras.

The thirty-eight articles in this volume encompass the proceedings of the International Conference on Algebra and Its Applications (Athens, OH, 1999), which explored the applications and interplay among the disciplines of ring theory, linear algebra, and coding theory. The presentations collected here reflect the dialogue between mathematicians involved in theoretical aspects of algebra and mathematicians involved in solving problems where state-of-the-art research tools may be used and applied. This Contemporary Mathematics series volume communicates the potential for collaboration among those interested in exploring the wealth of applications for abstract algebra in fields such as information and coding. The expository papers would serve well as supplemental reading in graduate seminars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first three chapters of this work contain an exposition of the Wedderburn structure theorems. Chapter IV contains the theory of the commutator subalgebra of a simple subalgebra of a normal simple algebra, the study of automorphisms of a simple algebra, splitting fields, and the index reduction factor theory. The fifth chapter contains the foundation of the theory of crossed products and of their special case, cyclic algebras. The theory of exponents is derived there as well as the consequent factorization of normal division algebras into direct factors of prime-power degree. Chapter VI consists of the study of the abelian group of cyclic systems which is applied in Chapter VII to yield the theory of the structure of direct products of cyclic algebras and the consequent properties of norms in cyclic fields. This chapter is closed with the theory of $p$-algebras. In Chapter VIII an exposition is given of the theory of the representations of algebras. The treatment is somewhat novel in that while the recent expositions have used representation theorems to obtain a number of results on algebras, here the theorems on algebras are themselves used in the derivation of results on representations. The presentation has its inspiration in the author's work on the theory of Riemann matrices and is concluded by the introduction to the generalization (by H. Weyl and the author) of that theory. The theory of involutorial simple algebras is derived in Chapter X both for algebras over general fields and over the rational field. The results are also applied in the determination of the structure of the multiplication algebras of all generalized Riemann matrices, a result which is seen in Chapter XI to imply a complete solution of the principal problem on Riemann matrices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hopf algebras have important connections to quantum theory, Lie algebras, knot and braid theory, operator algebras and other areas of physics and mathematics. They have been intensely studied in the past; in particular, the solution of a number of conjectures of Kaplansky from the 1970s has led to progress on the classification of semisimple Hopf algebras and on the structure of pointed Hopf algebras. Among the topics covered are results toward the classification of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras (semisimple and non-semisimple), as well as what is known about the extension theory of Hopf algebras. Some papers consider Hopf versions of classical topics, such as the Brauer group, while others are closer to work in quantum groups. The book also explores the connections and applications of Hopf algebras to other fields.
