Download or read book Mission to Seoul written by Thomas Wood and published by Green Hills Press. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1970s the Republic of Korea (South Korea) was a strange mixture of modern industry and medieval traditions, of Christianity and Shamanism, of a democratic façade masking a brutal totalitarian dictatorship. The dictator’s wife was assassinated by his enemies, and the role of First Lady fell to the dictator’s daughter. No one was free of suspicion; no one escaped punishment for disobedience. There were several American families living in the R.O.K. during that time, descendants of the first missionaries and businessmen to break through the Silk Curtain and settle in what had been until the late nineteenth century The Hermit Kingdom. These people were treated with respect but were under constant surveillance to make sure they did not threaten the regime. Their names, like the names of the Koreans integral to this story, are altered for their protection. Thomas Wood, a Peace Corps volunteer who specialized in hydraulic engineering, who now works for a prominent American company, took careful notes on the things he heard and saw while he worked in the R.O.K, from 1974—1977. This novel, featuring barely disguised characters participating in thinly veiled events, captures the essence of those days. Boyce Mann’s journey back to the land of his birth, what he finds there, what happens to him there, represent a fiction that Thomas Wood calls “historical fantasy.” His story may not have happened, but it did happen. You will find this novel as intriguing and fascinating as you did The Year of Living Dangerously, and you will find that it touches you more deeply than that story because Boyce Mann is an American, not an Australian, and he faces his dangers not in a country like Indonesia, not well known to Americans, but in a country that has been military partners with the United States for over sixty years. Read this story carefully, read it with relish, read it for enlightenment about Koreans and about ourselves. Once you begin to read, you will not stop; and once you have finished it you will much more aware of the ambiguities of the international pageant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional histories of the Korean War have long focused on violations of the thirty-eighth parallel, the line drawn by American and Soviet officials in 1945 dividing the Korean peninsula. But The interrogation rooms of the Korean War presents an entirely new narrative, shifting the perspective from the boundaries of the battlefield to inside the interrogation room. Upending conventional notions of what we think of as geographies of military conflict, Monica Kim demonstrates how the Korean War evolved from a fight over territory to one over human interiority and the individual human subject, forging the template for the U.S. wars of intervention that would predominate during the latter half of the twentieth century and beyond. Kim looks at how, during the armistice negotiations, the United States and their allies proposed a new kind of interrogation room: one in which POWs could exercise their "free will" and choose which country they would go to after the ceasefire. The global controversy that erupted exposed how interrogation rooms had become a flashpoint for the struggles between the ambitions of empire and the demands for decolonization, as the aim of interrogation was to produce subjects who attested to a nation's right to govern. The complex web of interrogators and prisoners -- Japanese-American interrogators, Indian military personnel, Korean POWs and interrogators, and American POWs -- that Kim uncovers contradicts the simple story in U.S. popular memory of "brainwashing" during the Korean War

Book excerpt: The two Korean states are heirs to a great artistic and cultural tradition. Moreover, they share a long, sometimes bitter historical experience, culminating in forty years of Japanese colonial rule. Although liberated in 1945, Korea was divided. Two states emerged, a communist North and an autocratic South. In 1950, the North failed in an attempt at reunification by force and the resultant Korean War intensified the hostility which continues to this day. Since the end of the war, South Korea has become one of the world's economic success stories. North Korea has been less successful, but attracts interest for its unique development as a Marxist state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public housing was once an important strand in western housing policies, but is seldom seen as a mainstream policy instrument for the future. In contrast, in many East Asian countries large public housing programs are underway. Behind these generalizations, there are exceptions, too. By including perspectives of scholars from across the world, this book provides new insights into public housing in its various forms. It contains in-depth chapters on public housing in five East Asian countries and six Western countries, together with three comparative overview chapters.
