Book excerpt: The general purpose with which this book has been written is sufficiently indicated by its title. I have selected a number of the 'classical' experiments of Experimental Psychology, and have tried to present them in such a way that their performance shall have a real disciplinary value for the undergraduate student. Within this general purpose, my aim has been two-fold. I have sought to show, in the first place, that psychology is above the laboratory: that we employ our instruments of precision not for their own sake, but solely because they help us to a refined and more accurate introspection. And secondly, just as in my Outline of Psychology and Primer of Psychology I gave the results of experimentation a prominent place in the psychological system, so here I have treated the selected experiments not as separate exercises, but as points of departure for systematic discussion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From listing the steps involved in a sensory evaluation project to presenting advanced statistical methods, Sensory Evaluation Techniques, Fourth Edition covers all phases of sensory evaluation. Like its bestselling predecessors, this edition continues to detail all sensory tests currently in use, to promote the effective employment of these tests, and to describe major sensory evaluation practices. The expert authors have updated and added many areas in this informative guide. New to this edition are expanded chapters on qualitative and quantitative consumer research and the SpectrumTM method of descriptive sensory analysis that now contains full descriptive lexicons for numerous products, such as cheese, mayonnaise, spaghetti sauce, white bread, cookies, and toothpaste. Also new in this chapter is a set of revised flavor intensity scales for crispness, juiciness, and some common aromatics. The book now includes an overview of Thurstonian scaling that examines the decision processes employed by assessors during their evaluations of products. Another addition is a detailed discussion of data-relationship techniques, which link data from diverse sources that are collected on the same set of examples. With numerous examples and sample tests, Sensory Evaluation Techniques, Fourth Edition remains an essential resource that illustrates the development of sensory perception testing.

Book excerpt: Sensory modulation is 'changing how we feel through using our senses'. The senses include touch, movement taste, smell, sight and sound. This sensory input changes the physiology of the body, and in doing so creates a shift in how the person feels. Sensory modulation is broader than just aiming to feel calm and relaxed. It can also be used to: -ground: when feeling dissociated, spacey or having difficulty focusing on the present -soothe: when feeling self-hatred, shame, sad or anxious -calm: when feeling anxious, scared, angry or agitated -relax: when the muscles feel tense or the mind feels stressed -alert: when feeling lethargic, tired or sedated, or having trouble concentrating -reduce or intensify sensations: when feeling self-hatred or shame or the urge to self-harm -increase pleasure: when feeling the need for joy in the moment or happy memories from the past -create a sense of safety: when feeling unsafe, triggered by the current environment or past memories -self-manage symptoms: when experiencing auditory hallucinations, panic attacks, or insomnia -manage pain and itch: when chronic pain or itch is an issue -cope with grief and shock: through soothing the body and mind -cope with cravings for addictions: through using alternatives to substances -reminisce: when wanting to improve memory or connect an elderly person to familiar or pleasurable sensations. Sensory modulation is being increasingly used in health, school and community settings, to support individuals to change their feelings through using sensory input. This manual provides practical assistance for people to increase their knowledge and skills concerning sensory modulation. This includes: -understanding the 8 senses. -explaining how sensory modulation works -getting started with sensory modulation -managing specific intense emotions and challenging scenarios -creating a Sensory Space -using sensory modulation so that it is Safe, Appropriate, Individualised and Meaningful -downloadable factsheets and worksheets

Book excerpt: For decades and in the interests of greater flight safety, Competence criteria have been introduced in professional training. The results obtained in professional aviation are indisputable and the proposed new paradigm aims to increase the pilot's ability to resolve, in particular, unfamiliar situations. There is no doubt that during soaring, the conditions faced are, as a general rule, highly variable, which requires the pilot to be highly adaptable. However, even though this flying technique is the one that requires the most resilience, there is no single criterion in the development of training that would lead the future pilot to develop the necessary skills, nor is there a single evaluation criterion that would determine a common standard. From my experience in professional teaching in organisations such as CAE, the experience as an EASA inspector and my own experience as a gliding instructor I wanted to propose a new way of teaching and, above all, of assessing a future glider pilot with COMPETENCE criteria in which the elements of CRM and TEM are always present together with the application of KSA. In this text I hope that gliding instructors will find a tool for teaching their classes and a greater standardisation as a guide to develop their own Competence Based Training and assessment adapted at the local conditions and gliders. The future is not white or black but an infinite scale of greys where different solution could be proposed successfully. By this the list of mission proposed is my personal view adapted to my programs but it not pretends to be an absolute criterion. Hope you will enjoy Happy landings! Francesco Padovano

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Howes’s sweeping history of the senses in the disciplines of anthropology and psychology and in the field of law lays the foundations for a sensational jurisprudence, or a way to do justice to and by the senses of other people. In part 1, Howes demonstrates how sensory ethnography has yielded alternative insights into how the senses function and argues convincingly that each culture should be approached on its own sensory terms. Part 2 documents how the senses have been disciplined psychologically within the Western tradition, starting with Aristotle and moving through the rise of Lockean empiricism and cognitive neuroscience. Here, Howes presents an anthropologically informed critique of experimental and cognitive psychology, sensory science, and phenomenology. In part 3, he introduces the paradigm of the “historical anthropology of the senses and sensation” and applies it to the analysis of trade relations between Europe and China in the early modern period, to the treaty-making process in North America during the colonial period, and to all the unresolved disputes over land rights and Indigenous sovereignty that continue to this day, arguing that these differences are rooted in a cultural clash of sensoria. Designed for the classroom, Sensorial Investigations displays an expansive critical engagement with generations of scholarship. It is essential reading for students and scholars of the history and anthropology of the senses, the psychology of sensation, and socio-legal studies.
