Book excerpt: This book presents a simple, yet complete, approach to the design and performance analysis of distributed processing algorithms and techniques suitable for IEEE 802.15.4 networks. In particular, the book focuses on the bottom two layers of the ISO/OSI stack (Physical and Medium Access Control), discussing also a few issue related to routing. The book is a the synergistic combination of signal processing aspects on the one hand and MAC and connectivity issues on the other hand. The goal of the book is to clearly link physical layer aspects with medium access and topology aspects, in order to provide the reader with a clear understanding of how to approach the design of proper distributed signal processing and medium access algorithms in this context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The next generation of older people is outnumbering the younger ones. Statistics show that it will reach 761 million by 2025, more than double of what it was in 1990. This will put an enormous demand on the health care systems. The recent advancements in wireless networking enabled proliferation of wireless sensor networks. These sensor networks are capable of monitoring and controlling environments remotely, thereby reducing the workload of medical care. Body area networks (BAN) have revolutionized the remote patient monitoring system. Sensors implanted in the body collect the vital sign data and report any anomaly to a physician. A wireless technology is required to transmit these signals. Although many solutions are available today to address this, a globally standardized technology is necessary. We investigated the available IEEE standard 802.15.1(Bluetooth) and 802.15.4 (ZigBee) to decide the best fit for BAN. ZigBee/802.15.4 proved to be the most suitable for this application. It has an excellent battery life which is the most important factor in BAN as the sensors are implanted within the body. We evaluate the performance of slotted CSMA/CA mechanism and GTS mechanism of 802.15.4 standard. The beacon enabled mode is used with broadcast transmissions. We provide an accurate simulation model with respect to the specifications of IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The effect of the different attributes (Superframe order (SO), Beacon order (BO) and Backoff exponent (BE)) on the network performance is analyzed.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instruments that observe entire systems in situ, using a relatively large number of interconnected and inexpensive nodes are expected to be enabled primarily by Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). These instruments place certain service demands on the underlying network e.g. connectivity, coverage, quality of service assurance arid energy efficient utilization. The IEEE 802.15.4 Low Rate Wireless Personal Area Network (LR-WPAN) specification is kitted with components that can deliver (or at least provide support for the delivery of) these services. As this specification is relatively new, with the first version released in 2003. a revision in 2006 and an update in 2007, it was incumbent that its operational mechanisms were well understood, to allow for efficient cross layer interaction between the different processes that make up the specification and existing or new higher layer protocols. To that end. in this thesis, we created a model of the specification that captured all but one of its functional requirements i.e. the security component. We studied and evaluated this model using a combination of a high fidelity simulation and mathematical tools. From these studies, we were able to identify areas in which the specification could be improved upon without extensive modification. Also identified were areas of cross layer interactions. The knowledge gained from the above was used to propose and evaluate three higher layer mechanisms/protocols including; a scalable dynamic topology control algorithm, a routing and transport protocol. All of which leveraged the services offered by the IEEE 802.15.4 specification to deliver on the objectives required of a WSN. These proposed higher layer mechanisms/protocols were thoroughly evaluated in order to demonstrate their flexibility, scalability and energy efficiency capabilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have risen in recent years both in the civilian and military sectors. While a number of WSN-based systems have been proposed and developed, vast majority of them focus on capability demonstration rather than the issues of deployment. As a result, even though the systems can serve useful purposes, they are very hard to deploy. The objective of this thesis is to focus on the deployment issues of WSNs. In addition, this thesis assesses the optimal configurations and environment that enables the sensor networks to thrive in a C4ISR environment. This thesis presents a technology review of the ZigBee and the IEEE 802.15.4 standards which form the core technology in WSNs. The thesis also discusses the IEEE 802.15.4 Physical and Media Access Control Layers that comprise the bottom two layers of WSNs. This thesis also provides a brief introduction to the hardware and software that deal with WSN technology. Lastly, this thesis evaluates the military applications of WSNs. It is hoped that the military can employ wireless sensors to increase situational awareness, attain information superiority, and improve decision-making.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First International ICST Conference on Sensor Systems and Software (S-cube 2009) was held during 7–8 September in Pisa, Italy. This new international conference was dedicated to addressing the research challenges facing system dev- opment and software support for systems based on wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that have the potential to impact society in many ways. Currently, wireless sensor networks introduce innovative and interesting application scenarios that may support a large amount of different applications including environmental monitoring, disaster prevention, building automation, object tracking, nuclear reactor control, fire det- tion, agriculture, healthcare, and traffic monitoring. The widespread acceptance of these new services can be improved by the definition of frameworks and architectures that have the potential to radically simplify software development for wireless sensor network-based applications. The aim of these new architectures is to support flexible, scalable programming of applications based on adaptive middleware. As a con- quence, WSNs require novel programming paradigms and technologies. Moreover, the design of new complex systems, characterized by the interaction of different and heterogeneous resources, will allow the development of innovative applications that meet high-performance goals. Hence, WSNs require contributions from many fields such as embedded systems, distributed systems, data management, system security and applications. The conference places emphasis on layers well above the traditional MAC and routing and transport layer protocols.
