It was conceived and born amidst the most desperate of circumstances. It attracted some of the most brilliant minds, the most innovative entrepreneurs, and the most c- ative tinkerers of that generation. Out of that milieu emerged physics and engineering that beforehand was either unimagined, or thought to be f- tasy. One of the ?elds essentially invented during those years was the science of precision high explosives. Before 1942, explosives were used in munitions and commercial pursuits that demanded proper chemistry and con?nement for the necessary e?ect, but little else. The needs and requirements of the Manhattan project were of a much more precise and speci?c nature. Spatial and temporal speci?cations were reduced from centimeters and milliseconds to micrometers and nanoseconds. New theory and computational tools were required along with a raft of new experimental techniques and novel ways of interpreting the results. Over the next 40 years, the emphasis was on higher energy in smaller packages, more precise initiation schemes, better and safer formulations, and greater accuracy in forecasting performance. Researchers from many institutions began working in the emerging and expanding ?eld. In the midst of all of the work and progress in precision initiation and scienti?c study, in the early 1960s, papers began to appear detailing the ?rst quantitative studies of the transition from de?agration to detonation (DDT), ?rst in cast, then in pressed explosives, and ?nally in propellants.

Book excerpt: This report describes an improved, approaching-needle electrostatic sensitivity apparatus as well as the instrumentation used for measuring time- dependent gaseous discharge characteristics. It is shown that the addition of resistances in series with the gap changes the nature of the discharge as found previously for the fixed-gap apparatus. The energy delivered from the storage capacitor to the gap is 3-6% for an arc discharge and 15-25% for a spark discharge. The initiation of basic lead styphnate, RD1333 lead azide, and tetracene by gaseous discharge is a strong function of the energy delivery rate. The threshold initiation energy values were considerably less in the spark mode (long duration discharge) than in the oscillatory or arc modes (Short duration discharges). The ranking of the sensitivity of these three primary explosives did not vary with the mode of discharge as found previously for the fixed-gap, parallel-plate apparatus. To meet the need for a single, standardized electrostatic sensitivity apparatus and test method able to distinguish between primary, booster or main charge explosives and to rank the sensitivity of explosives, the approaching needle apparatus used in this study, with slight modifications, is proposed to the Joint Service Committee for adoption as a Tri- Service standard. Book excerpt: The report reviews electrostatic sensitivity testing methods and techniques used at the Explosives Division, Feltman Research Laboratory, Picatinny Arsenal, and the Naval Ordnance Laboratory. The advantages and disadvantages of the present methods are discussed with the emphasis on the appropriateness of each method in determining a minimum energy for initiation. The properties of the electric discharge circuits, particularly the effects of the series resistances and storage capacitors on discharge rate that govern the energy delivery to the spark gap, are analyzed. To develop testing procedures that will yield a more meaningful characterization of the sensitivity of primary explosives, a testing methodology that involves the use of a sensitivity map, a type of response surface, is introduced.

Some of these incidents were thought to be electrostatic discharge (ESD) related. To aid in the search for the cause of these problems, we compiled this partial list of reports relating to electrostatic discharge in energetic materials. We extracted these citations from bibliographies prepared by the Chemical Propulsion Information Agency. There are 97 citations. Keywords include: Pyrotechnics, Propellants, Explosives, Bibliography, Electrostatics, and Sensitivity.

Book excerpt: The need has arisen in the Naval Ordnance Laboratory for an apparatus to measure the susceptibility of explosives and pyrotechnic materials to initiation by a static electrical spark discharge. By charging a known condenser to a known voltage, a calculable quantity of energy can be dissipated in a spark through an explosive sample. After some preliminary work at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory and after the inspection of the apparatus at the Bureau of Mines, it was decided to build an apparatus of the design presented. Although the basic circuit is quite simple, much care was taken to eliminate loss of charge that might arise from corona or surface leakage.

Book excerpt: The report describes an investigation related to the possibility that an accidental electrostatic discharge within a munition may initiate a Composition B main charge. The source, in the supposed mechanism, is a 1500- picofarad capacitor charged to a maximum of 3000 volts (67,500 ergs). The fraction of this energy available to the explosive, as a function of time depends on the circuit parameters and the arc characteristics. The test device used to simulate the discharge stress applied to the explosive employed a 0.05 microfarad capacitor charged to 3400 volts. Approximately 10% (300,000 ergs) of the stored energy appears in the spark gap with about a 0.2-microsecond time constant for the discharge. Repeated application of this discharge to the surface of the explosive did not initiate the Composition B.A method for measuring the energy in the spark gap is described. A mathematical model of the discharge circuit is developed and its predictions are compared with the experimental results. The potential of the test device for measuring the electrostatic sensitivity of explosives is discussed.
