The granular materials provide load distribution through aggregate contacts to a level that can help the subgrade to withstand the applied loads. Several research studies have shown that unbound pavement layers exhibit anisotropic properties. Anisotropy is caused by the preferred orientation of aggregates and compaction forces. The result is unbound pavement layers that have higher stiffness in the vertical direction than in the horizontal direction. This behavior is not accounted for in the design and analysis procedures included in the proposed AASHTO 2002 design guide. One of the objectives of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis of flexible pavement response using different models for unbound pavement layers: linear isotropic, nonlinear isotropic, linear anisotropic and nonlinear anisotropic. Pavement response is computed using a finite element program. The computations from nonlinear isotropic and anisotropic models of unbound layers are compared to the AASHO field experimental measurements. The second objective is to analyze the influence of using isotropic and anisotropic properties for the pavement layers on the performance of flexible pavements calculated using the AASHTO 2002 models. Finally, a comprehensive sensitivity analysis of the proposed AASHTO 2002 performance models to the properties of the unbound pavement layers is conducted. The sensitivity analysis includes different types of base materials, base layer thicknesses, hot mix asphalt type and thickness, environmental conditions, and subgrade materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook lays out the state of the art for modeling of asphalt concrete as the major structural component of flexible pavements. The text adopts a pedagogy in which a scientific approach, based on materials science and continuum mechanics, predicts the performance of any configuration of flexible roadways subjected to cyclic loadings. The authors incorporate state-of the-art computational mechanics to predict the evolution of material properties, stresses and strains, and roadway deterioration. Designed specifically for both students and practitioners, the book presents fundamentally complex concepts in a clear and concise way that aids the roadway design community to assimilate the tools for designing sustainable roadways using both traditional and innovative technologies.

Book excerpt: Climate change, energy production and consumption, and the need to improve the sustainability of all aspects of human activity are key inter-related issues for which solutions must be found and implemented quickly and efficiently. To be successfully implemented, solutions must recognize the rapidly changing socio-techno-political environment and multi-dimensional constraints presented by today’s interconnected world. As part of this global effort, considerations of climate change impacts, energy demands, and incorporation of sustainability concepts have increasing importance in the design, construction, and maintenance of highway and airport pavement systems. To prepare the human capacity to develop and implement these solutions, many educators, policy-makers and practitioners have stressed the paramount importance of formally incorporating sustainability concepts in the civil engineering curriculum to educate and train future civil engineers well-equipped to address our current and future sustainability challenges. This book will prove a valuable resource in the hands of researchers, educators and future engineering leaders, most of whom will be working in multidisciplinary environments to address a host of next-generation sustainable transportation infrastructure challenges. "This book proposes a broad detailed overview of the actual scientific knowledge about pavements linked to climate change, energy and sustainability at the international level in an original multidimensional/multi-effects way. By the end, the reader will be aware of the whole global issues to care about for various pavement technical features around the world, among which the implications of modelling including data collection, challenging resources saving and infrastructures services optimisation. This is a complete and varied work, rare in the domain." Dr. Agnes Jullien Research Director Director of Environmental, Development, Safety and Eco-Design Laboratory (EASE) Department of Development, Mobility and Environment Ifsttar Centre de Nantes Cedex- France “An excellent compilation of latest developments in the field of sustainable pavements. The chapter topics have been carefully chosen and are very well-organized with the intention of equipping the reader with the state-of-the-art knowledge on all aspects of pavement sustainability. Topics covered include pavement Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), pervious pavements, cool pavements, photocatalytic pavements, energy harvesting pavements, etc. which will all be of significant interest to students, researchers, and practitioners of pavement engineering. This book will no doubt serve as an excellent reference on the topic of sustainable pavements.” Dr. Wei-Hsing Huang Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Pavement Research and Technology (IJPRT) and Professor of Civil Engineering National Central University Taiwan

Book excerpt: In this paper, the 1986 AASHTO flexible pavement design equation for flexible pavement design was selected as a performance model and sensitivity analysis conducted for that model. There was two specific objectives: first, to evaluate the sensitivity of the 1986 AASHTO flexible pavement design to various pavement design factors (i.e., asphalt concrete modulus, layer thicknesses and traffic loads) and, second, to evaluate the effects of pavement design factors on performance of the pavement based on difference between Initial Serviceability Index and Terminal Serviceability Index. The researcher came to the following conclusions: 1 - Thickness of asphalt concrete layer and modulus of subgrade are the most important variables in pavement serviceability based on AASHTO 1986 flexible pavement model; 2 - With change in sub-grade strength and construction factors such as thickness of pavement layers, the performance of pavement could be different in different locations, as some areas of pavements have cracks and other distress and some other are as with enough strength; 3 - The sensitivity analysis for change in serviceability could be used in Pavement Management System (PMS); 4 - More quality control should be applied for accuracy of the asphalt concrete thickness during construction; 5 - In the design of a flexible pavement, more attention should be considered in specifying the modulus of subgrade. For the covering abstract of this conference see IRRD number 872753.

Book excerpt: The Kansas Department of Transportation (DOT) uses the 1993 DARWin version of the 1986 AASHTO Guide to design flexible pavements and rehabilitation strategies of flexible pavements. One of the inputs needed for the flexible pavement design procedure is the structural layer coefficient for each pavement layer. The Kansas DOT procedure to assign structural layer coefficients was developed years ago and based on an analysis of flexible pavement performance data and layer properties. It has been recently suggested that the Kansas DOT increase the structural layer coefficients because of changes in material and construction specifications. Different procedures can be used to estimate the structural layer coefficients for flexible pavement design. As part of the study entitled Determination of the Appropriate Use of Pavement Surface History in the KDOT Life-Cycle Cost Analysis Process an evaluation of the procedure that Kansas DOT uses to assign structural layer coefficients to different pavement materials was completed. This report provides the results of that evaluation.

Book excerpt: This report presents the analysis conducted on relating pavement performance or response measures and design considerations to specific pavement layers utilizing data contained in the Long-Term Pavement Performance Program National Information Management System. The goal of this research activity was to enhance implementation and use of the 1993 AASHTO Design Guide through improved materials characterizations. Specifically, the focus of this research activity was to identify the differences that exist between laboratory measured and backcalculated resilient moduli; determine the applicability of the C values, drainage coefficients, and relative damage factors that are included in the Design Guide; and provide procedures to adequately consider the seasonal variation of material properties as related to flexible pavement designs. Based on these results, design pamphlets have been prepared in support of the AASHTO Design Guide. These design pamphlets are documented and included in other reports. The results reported here form the basis and background for those design pamphlets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide provides guidance to calibrate the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) software to local conditions, policies, and materials. It provides the highway community with a state-of-the-practice tool for the design of new and rehabilitated pavement structures, based on mechanistic-empirical (M-E) principles. The design procedure calculates pavement responses (stresses, strains, and deflections) and uses those responses to compute incremental damage over time. The procedure empirically relates the cumulative damage to observed pavement distresses.
