Book excerpt: The authors of this book analyze the influence of specific everyday life situations and contexts on the emotional state of people and the ways in which this can impact measurements of user experience. The book anticipates a future in which products and machines know how we feel and adapt to the feelings they sense (music systems that effectively enhance our current mood with a personalized choice of music, computer dialogues that avoid upcoming frustration, and photo cameras that take pictures whenever we're excited). In all these situations, knowledge of the emotional state of the user is prime information. A previous book published in the Philips Research Book Series, "Probing Experience", illustrated ways to evaluate the user experience through behavioural and physiological parameters. The present book focuses on the influence of context in these measurements. The everyday-life contexts of future products and machines will be always specific, especially in comparison to the standard laboratory situation. Context can impact the experience measurements and influence the occurrence and characteristics of certain signals. On the other hand, independent knowledge of the context could be very valuable for the interpretation of experience measurements. This book provides an overview of the present knowledge on the impact of context, and advocates the need for a joint understanding of its role in the measurement of experience. The authors comprise many experienced researchers on this topic with a wide variety of backgrounds, including business and academia, covering a broad range of context situations.

Book excerpt: From one of the world’s leading neuroscientists: a succinct, illuminating, wholly engaging investigation of how biology, neuroscience, psychology, and artificial intelligence have given us the tools to unlock the mysteries of human consciousness “One thrilling insight after another ... Damasio has succeeded brilliantly in narrowing the gap between body and mind.” —The New York Times Book Review In recent decades, many philosophers and cognitive scientists have declared the problem of consciousness unsolvable, but Antonio Damasio is convinced that recent findings across multiple scientific disciplines have given us a way to understand consciousness and its significance for human life. In the forty-eight brief chapters of Feeling & Knowing, and in writing that remains faithful to our intuitive sense of what feeling and experiencing are about, Damasio helps us understand why being conscious is not the same as sensing, why nervous systems are essential for the development of feelings, and why feeling opens the way to consciousness writ large. He combines the latest discoveries in various sciences with philosophy and discusses his original research, which has transformed our understanding of the brain and human behavior. Here is an indispensable guide to understanding how we experience the world within and around us and find our place in the universe.

In so doing, these collected essays consider the ways in which these core concerns are mutually constitutive. This includes how spaces evoke, constrain or are composed by the senses and emotions; the ways in which emotions are generated or transformed in certain spaces and through sensual engagement; and the processes by which embodied senses create spaces and emotions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As organizations shift to depend more on team-based structures, the pressure to develop high-performing teams is more critical than ever. In the modern work environment, teams are expected to embrace change, navigate complexity, and collaborate well under pressure ―all while delivering exceptional results and forming productive relationships. While it is crucial to have talented, bright people within a team, there is a dynamic that is even more essential to overall team effectiveness. This dynamic is “Team Emotional Intelligence” (Team EQ). While most people are familiar with emotional intelligence (EQ) when it comes to individuals, the power of how EQ relates to the entire team has not been well-understood until now. Insights from the latest research on team emotional intelligence and TalentSmartEQ’s research trends from working with over 200 teams (with 2000+ team members) combine to bring EQ know-how to the team level. Team Emotional Intelligence 2.0 delivers practical strategies and showcases how an emotionally intelligent team is far more than the sum of its parts. This book focuses on the four key skill areas of Team EQ: Team Emotion Awareness, Team Emotion Management, Internal Team Relationships, and External Team Relationships, and it delivers 55 strategies and a step-by-step process for increasing team EQ skills so team leaders and anyone who’s a member of a team can achieve peak performance and reach their goals. Dr. Greaves, Evan Watkins, and their contributing team of experts begin with a life and death story of team failure that illustrates how emotions can drive team decisions and lead to disaster. They share a proven approach to helping teams understand Team EQ skills, build these skills into strengths, and use them to sustain positive momentum and achieve peak performance. Strategies for remote and hybrid teams working virtually offer targeted approaches to bonding, communicating, tough conversations, and decision making as modern workplaces transform. Like she did with the best-selling Emotional Intelligence 2.0 (at 2 million copies sold and counting), Dr. Greaves and her team take complex concepts and translate them into easy-to-understand skills that can be used immediately and developed further over time. As organizations increasingly rely on getting work done through teams, the understanding and development of team EQ skills is more relevant and impactful than ever.

Book excerpt: This book comprises materials that may serve as an inspiration to teachers and non-pedagogical employees who wish to develop socio-emotional skills in pupils. (...) There are various concepts of socio-emotional learning (SEL); however, they all refer to the development of personal and social skills, including learning how to cooperate, be empathetic, communicate, self-regulate (manage one’s emotions) and think critically. (...) Socio-emotional competencies of pupils foster their functioning in school and achieving – both personal and professional – success in the future. These competencies may be developed at school. The socio-emotional learning process is not a separate aspect of the didactic process; it is rather a philosophy of developing these competencies during each activity: lessons, project work, and school breaks. *** The guide is prepared in a way that makes it accessible. It is divided into subject sections, (...) and individual modules are not too extensive; each of them ends with a set of questions which encourage a reflection. Particular problems are also completed with examples from school practice. (…) A significant challenge in training teachers is not providing them with knowledge but working with teachers’ personal beliefs. Owing to these beliefs, information is either accepted or not, and the proposed solutions are implemented (or not) into school practices, both didactic and pedagogical. The authors offer questions that are very useful in terms of encouraging reflections on one’s own opinions, beliefs, practices and their consequences. Małgorzata Rosalska, Prof. UAM, Ph.D. The book has been created for the purposes of the EU project Building social and emotional skills to BOOST mental health resilience in children and young people in Europe and funded from the Horizon 2020 scheme.

Book excerpt: Human conversational partners are able, at least to a certain extent, to detect the speaker’s or listener’s emotional state and may attempt to respond to it accordingly. When instead one of the interlocutors is a computer a number of questions arise, such as the following: To what extent are dialogue systems able to simulate such behaviors? Can we learn the mechanisms of emotional be- viors from observing and analyzing the behavior of human speakers? How can emotionsbeautomaticallyrecognizedfromauser’smimics, gesturesandspeech? What possibilities does a dialogue system have to express emotions itself? And, very importantly, would emotional system behavior be desirable at all? Given the state of ongoing research into incorporating emotions in dialogue systems we found it timely to organize a Tutorial and Research Workshop on A?ectiveDialogueSystems(ADS2004)atKlosterIrseein GermanyduringJune 14–16, 2004. After two successful ISCA Tutorial and Research Workshops on Multimodal Dialogue Systems at the same location in 1999 and 2002, we felt that a workshop focusing on the role of a?ect in dialogue would be a valuable continuation of the workshop series. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, the workshop attracted submissions from researchers with very di?erent backgrounds and from many di?erent research areas, working on, for example, dialogue processing, speech recognition, speech synthesis, embodied conversational agents, computer graphics, animation, user modelling, tutoring systems, cognitive systems, and human-computer inter- tion.

Book excerpt: As humans we incarnate and evolve through our experiences. We become independent beings capable of willing, feeling and thinking. We can interact, make decisions, judge and find our own truth, identity and uniqueness. But how and why do we do this? We can compare our self creation to making a cake. The basic ingredients for the making of a cake are the same, but they are also always different. The flour may be milled from wheat grown in different parts of the world, the eggs may be laid by different hens and the butter made from milk taken from different cows. These ingredients can be compared to our, inheritance - our start in life - our genetic make up, parents, culture etc. where there is always variation in color, type, size etc. How the ingredients are put together has a profound affect on the final result. The cook, making a cake, can be likened to our experiencing and all the information that we sense and take in to mix together. Baking the cake is like our processing when we program our experiences to create our willing, feeling and thinking. The result is ourselves - just like a cake, which we can eat, throw away or leave to go mouldy. We can enjoy or dislike the result. This is us, our creation to be as we will. Our autobiography is about our evolution and how we sense and program ourselves. How we develop our willing, feeling and thinking to create our soul. This process is unique to human life and enables us to become conscious of the most important part of our being. It is the reason for our existence - to be consciousness of spirit. We can only achieve this through creating ourselves.
